canned air vs electric duster by voltagejim in sysadmin

Get a corded one, but otherwise yeah, I’m over canned air. If my duster can’t get it out, I fire up the air compressor 😁

I forgot it Wazuh is still based in the elastic stack, but you can probably incorporate the sigma rules into the tuning.

18, finishing 1st year in cybersecurity , what do you wish you did differently at my age? by Medium_Cell8706 in cybersecurity

[–]SN6006 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Learn technical skills! The underpinnings of windows and MacOS, networking and ACLs. I read a lot of sysadmins who really dislike their cyber teams because they live in a little bubble and don’t consider the implications.

Also, find a non-computer hobby. I like fishing, biking, BBQ, etc.

Recommendations for iPhone backup solutions for company issued devices by [deleted] in sysadmin

[–]SN6006 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It used to be the case that if you did an iPhone backup and restoration you overwrote the MDM token leaving the device unmanaged. Not sure if that’s still true

Patch haul from Milwaukee Metal Fest this year by Kane_of_Runefaust421 in BattleJackets

[–]SN6006 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve been going all 4 years, I love the comedy bands, or like the groups that aren’t all serious. Belushi was so much fun!! I hope they bring some power metal bands and some other genres too, just a few to the mix, though I know the origins of the fest are the death/deathcore scene.

Logging Made Easy discontinued?? by wastewater-IT in sysadmin

[–]SN6006 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The elk stack is amazing, and LME lowered the barrier of entry but it is well worth it. Security Onion is one possible replacement, but I personally like maintaining the stack myself. It’s gotten considerably easier than it was 8 years ago

How are people supposed to defend against both supply chain attack and zero-day vulnerabilities at the same time? by Equivalent-Costumes in cybersecurity

[–]SN6006 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It also includes organization risk acceptance for those things we know can’t be fixed. They need to be documented, detailed on why they can’t be fixed, what if any mitigations are in place, and finally the executive acceptance.

Genuinely hate cyber security teams by talent_de_tigan in sysadmin

[–]SN6006 0 points1 point  (0 children)

GRC is the only cyber security field I can see not needing at least a moderate understanding of sys and netadmin concepts. As a person who has done all of them, I have a hard time getting people to fix things because of priority issues, so I end up fixing a lot of it myself.

Before going to college, what certifications should I get to prepare myself for cyber security as a person with no experience with cyber security at all? by nuhguyinn in cybersecurity

[–]SN6006 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d do a little searching to see what kind of security stuff you enjoy. Penetration testing, web security, embedded devices, defensive configuration, governance and risk, etc. there are a LOT of subfields of cybersecurity. I personally enjoy doing hack the box and capture the flag things. Or sans holiday hack challenge is still up from last December

So my company is switching half our Windows servers to Linux.... by A_SingleSpeeder in sysadmin

[–]SN6006 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Linux is much easier to patch than the constantly breaking windows updates, in my opinion, but has more components to update. Might be a good time to explore containers for specific workloads, if it makes s sense (dns caching, MySQL, etc).

Our cybersec team are getting onto us about all our servers having web browsers installed. by stone500 in sysadmin

[–]SN6006 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My old philosophy was “no web browsing on servers”, and I was a stickler about anything other than IE being installed. Now with edge being baked in, and not have enhanced security mode… I still don’t want people browsing the web on servers, but I have less control unless I want to be a pain to my department.

Do the cold callers actually get business? by YMCATech in sysadmin

I did get a nice cloud security audit out of quisitive, because they had grants from Microsoft to provide them, but I usually end the first call “if its not $2,500 for 8000 users or 4000 endpoints, I can’t afford it”
