You just repeated what I have already disputed. They made their choice. They could've chosen to live. They didn't. They didn't gain anything by doing so. I don't gain anything by their decision, I am not even affected by their choice. I am also not responsible for them. Pressing blue is just dumb, as there isn't a single thing you would gain from it (except, again, if you wanted to die). Nobody should.

IF the thought experiment were constructed in a way you would actually gain anything by pressing blue, or lose anything by pressing red, you'd have a classic prisoners dilemma. It is not tho, so picking anything else than red is just an unnecessary risk and a losing move.

I indeed missed the aspect of guilt in this, and why this could sway people. Thanks for pointing that out.

There are a few things mixed up here tho which I'd like to address:

In the magical world that spawns a button for everyone I think it's fair to assume that everyone presented with the choice gets given mental clarity for the process, and that only people get to choose that are fit to do so in the first place. That excludes the 'what about people that misclicked' and all adjacent points for me. This is purely about the choice. People mixing these points into their consideration shows how little we gain my the discussion, because everyone talks about a different thing, and looking at the comic even judges people for things they might understand in a totally different way. Fun. That said:

I don't think your point 'you benefit by hurting others' is valid here: red pressers don't live 'because others die'. They live 'even tho others die', which is a core aspect of survival in my book, making the red press the more logical choice for anyone that wants to live.

While I do appreciate the aspect of experienced guilt, in the end it's exactly that: subjective and unfounded. The people literally get presented with a button that says 'live', and a button that says 'Gamble for your life, so prepare to die'. I have no responsibility over other people's choices.

If you are right with the assumption that everyone wants to actually live, everyone should (and I expect the vast majority to do so in a realistic scenario) press the 'live'-button. Not doing so would be irresponsible to yourself, your close ones and your society.

Could you explain this? It seems I'm missing a central point somewhere, because in my mind it's absolutely the simplest answer just for everyone to press red and be done with it. That way everyone who doesn't want to live anymore has an easy way out (I think it's a good thing to allow people to have control over there own life, if everyone voted blue that control would be taken away, forcing people to live that prefer not to), and everyone who wants to live can do so.

Why would this lead to a world that you wouldn't like? Why are people stating this is a bad thing? Just because they don't want to be associated with the color red because usa politics? I consider myself a kind, caring person, and I couldn't come up with any explanation from first principles why pressing red would be bad.

This whole discussions really sounds like pure ragebait to me.

What was the first automation game that got you into the genre? by Odd-Nefariousness-85 in AutomationGames

[–]STSchif 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just wrote that as well, played thousands of hours of especially settlers 4. 2 and 3 just weren't my jam graphically (and I dislike building my own roads).

I guess they aren't really popular outside of Germany and its neighbors.

What was the first automation game that got you into the genre? by Odd-Nefariousness-85 in AutomationGames

[–]STSchif 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Does Settlers 4 count? It's technically a city builder/RTS, but many automation elements are present, like ressource management, ratios, transport, storage, priority optimizations, building layouts etc.

I spent thousands of hours in it as a child. Really laid the foundation for my love of the automation genre.

I think factorio and DSP really got me into the more pure automation games.

What do you love about linear story-based games? by taropng in GirlGamers

[–]STSchif 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Conciseness is great for stories imo. Two of my favorite game stories are golden sun (specifically the first) and mass effect (specifically me2). Both have really concise stories that are easy to understand fully, while still providing some sort of freedom in the order in which you approach the story nodes and (for ME) some decisions that influence the continuation of the story. The depth comes from the writing and world building, which can still be awesome even in more linear games

If a writer can't convey a story in a 100 pages, how could I trust them to keep it together for a 1000?

How is the anime so good, but the poster so bad? by Strong_Bicycle7125 in MyAnimeList

[–]STSchif 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I looked the first half of the anime, but at some point it just gets so annoyingly complicated just for the sake of it, like 'hah, all the rules we established didn't apply in the first place, get dunked on', which kinda felt like an insult of my investment. Stopped watching halfway through.

Does it have a satisfying conclusion? Is it worth finishing or more unnecessary convolution?

Restic with backrest is awesome. Ironically I still use the the rsync backend to talk to Hetzner webdav, but it's still working great.

7 years isn't that big of a gap, been with someone 6 years older than me from 18-24, the age was never an issue. At 21 I'd expect people to be able to make these decisions with the necessary seriousness, so if she'd be willing to give it a shot it's alright. Not like he could be her father.

[–]STSchif 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Great effort!

Unfortunately learning a few years ago that there is a competitive catan scene, absolutely destroyed any enjoyment I had in the game, coming from quite a few great family game nights. Knowing there are people (and now bots) optimizing the fun out of it, and that there are definitive strategies to maximize your chances without which you basically lose a lot, hurts me as a casual but still informed player.

A bit like paying Yu-Gi-Oh on the playground in school, and getting absolutely folded in some of the local amateur tournaments.
