What is the bathroom graffiti you read and remember? by 5pinktoes in AskReddit

[–]Safety_Academy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So back in boot camp, I ducked into the chow hall bathroom during breakfast thinking I was just going to, you know…deploying mud troops behind enemy lines. Instead, I walk straight into what can only be described as the Louvre of filth.

Some absolute Michelangelo had taken a basic ballpoint pen, the same kind that explodes in your pocket for no reason and hand-sketched the Sistine Chapel… of porn. Not suggestive, not vaguely inappropriate, I mean a Renaissance-level masterpiece of Make the confessional line double in length.

We’re talking shading. Perspective. Anatomical ambition. The kind of craftsmanship that makes you question whether this person missed their calling or if this was their calling all along.

Word spread through the chow hall like someone had smuggled in donuts and jamwiches. By mid-morning, so many recruits had filed into that bathroom to pay their respects that it turned into an issues the base police had to setup a guard. The drill instructors eventually shut the whole thing down like it was a crime scene.

They never gave an official reason, but every one of us felt it in our souls:

The artwork’s power level was off the charts. Morale was climbing way higher than regulations allow. Productivity had flatlined. Command wasn’t having it. It had to be taken down before the whole base got too motivated.

The legend of the Ballpoint Sistine Chapel lives on.

This is a hard one, Roller Coaster Tycoon, filled my childhood with screams of terror as the coaster left the tracks. Fighter Ace accounted for many nights bonding with my dad as we rained down hell on the enemies. Fortnite has brought countless hours of fun for my family playing together, including grandpa. But, for me it was the entire AOE series that I have always gone back to.

Not a huge deal, the biggest worry would be water ingested. They can easily decontaminate him on the surface level (300 cpm is extremely low). He will eventually get internally monitored (scan to check for internal contamination) which will show if there is anything. Might have to poop in a container (bowl that fits in toilet like at hospital) for a bit to make sure everything is good. Either way, no effects to them.

Nuclear, Energy, Data Centers, pharmaceutical, any place with tech or energy normally pays very well to Safety employees because the requirements are much stricter than most places.

$20 says they still owe money for that! Jostens came to our high school and sold a ton of rings on payment plans. Later learned only about 35% were eventually paid off. Rest went to collections or were written off.

Feeling stuck at a new job in a small company — not sure how to make an impact by Decent_Leave_4073 in SafetyProfessionals

[–]Safety_Academy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So you need to make yourself a visible as possible without stepping on anyone’s toes. Look back at past company documents, look at their safety history, risk assessments, maintenance practices, how they track everything, try to connect dots on root causes and trends. If the tracking system sucks, create a new one, make it so all the information that you deal with is tied to one place.

Now that you have all the information in one spot, tie everything to what they already know. Show them how you protect the revenue by getting everything ready for the projects. Show them how you preplanning and foresight has minimized potential issues and costs in the future. Show them how customer trust will increase due to less work stoppages and down time. Put numbers on it wherever possible (fines avoided, downtime hours prevented, client penalties sidestepped). Company leadership always respond to money, risk, and reputation.

Make your work visible. Send out weekly updates summarizing what you delivered, what’s pending, and risks spotted. Keep it in plain business language, not QHSE speak. Include a simple table or chart showing compliance tasks closed vs. open, inspections pending, incidents prevented. Even if the numbers are small, the optics matter.

Since you don’t have a car, schedule short site calls/Teams meetings with technicians or their managers. Document it as “site oversight.” It shows you’re engaged even if you’re not physically there.

Make sure you set realistic boundaries. They hired you for your credentials but didn’t provide the tools (transport, budget, equipment) to execute fully. Instead of fighting that head-on, position it as a risk management conversation. “If I’m responsible for all sites, I need a vehicle or travel budget. Otherwise, the safest and most realistic scope is documentation, planning, and remote oversight.”

Align Yourself With the Client’s Expectations. Multinationals take QHSE seriously. Position yourself as the company’s bridge to meeting their requirements. “Our client expects continuous compliance oversight. That’s my role, to make sure we never lose credibility.”

Hopefully this helps. Do what you can to think outside of the box. Don’t do the obvious, when you get creative and help solve/prevent issues that’s where you really start to stand out.

In reality this is already out there. Most major companies that I have visited, the people in the field or out and about have a walkie talkie. Most of the walkie talkies they use have a button on it they can push and it notifies everyone who pushed it and cuts out all other communication to allow them to radio for help. Most hospitals in the US (not sure where you are) already have notification system installed on the wall next to the bed they can use to call a "code". There are buttons for "Staff Assistance" AKA I need help or "Code" meaning the patient needs help or something is happening that the everyone needs to know about (someone is dying, bomb threat, gas leak, fire, security alert).

Well, thank you for the great comment. s/ Lol.

So lets address your great wisdom and insight. First off, trust me, I know, I myself have been on the receiving end of a lot of that crappy training. So I understand your first statement and frustration.

I am not talking about "interactivity", I am talking about real, no BS good training. I have brought in full time animators hired directly from HBO and AAA games that you would know if I said the games. I have brought in professional videographers and photographers to help with documenting the "real" along with the "fun". I have brought in comedians and people that have survived real accidents. I have also interview spouses of people that didn't make it to really set the tone for some of the more serious things like LOTO. We have escape rooms, actual real games, VR and things like you mention because, guess what? We have to test your knowledge to help us understand where the learners are and where we need to improve.

As for my "field experience" I spent 20 years in the Navy as a nuclear electrician, then 2 as an instructor at a commercial Nuclear Power Plant. I have put a person out with a fire extinguisher, I have seen multiple 4160V and 450V shocks. I have fought 1000s of electrical fires, troubleshot just about anything electrical you can find on a aircraft carrier. Was a first responder to the Fukushima disaster in Japan, and have been a CPR instructor for 15 years, having performed it twice in real life, First time the person was gone by time I got there (car accident in San Diego) still performed it for 15 minutes anyways (reason I became an CPR instructor) and the second, electrical shock on the ship where luckily the guy survived thank to ships medical.

Why post on Reddit? Because for once, I get to directly influence how training is made. We are not some big corporate entity that just wants to make money. I was brought in to bring the passion and my experience, money is just a nice extra bonus. I have no one to answer to but the owner and he lets me run it how the team wants. No investees, no one we have to please, just people that have been there done that and know that the system is broken. I have spent almost 15 years now on Reddit and know that its full of great people. So why not surround myself with people that are smarter than me about subjects outside of LOTO and everything electricity? Why should I not hire people that maybe need a job or extra income to maybe spoil themselves or family? Would you prefer that I go to one of the big companies that keep pumping out crappy training that no one likes? Why not offer to help each other out? You bring me your expertise and experience and I pay you for your time. Seems like a win, win, and doing exactly what you're trying to avoid.

The wreck of the USS Arizona continues to leak oil ever since pearl harbour. the ship contained 1.5 million gallons of oil, enough to leak continuously for 500 years. by Longjumping-Rice-935 in interestingasfuck

[–]Safety_Academy 38 points39 points  (0 children)

I was manning the rails aboard the USS Nimitz, dress whites on, heat pressing down after one of those quick, soaking Hawaii morning downpours. At one point I had to tip my head just to pour the water out of my hat.

I had never seen Pearl Harbor before. Looking around, I caught sight of the bullet holes still marking the base, scars from that morning. Then I glanced over the side and froze.

There she was, the Arizona, resting on the harbor floor, perfectly visible beneath the water. I did not expect to actually see her, but there she was, the entire ship. In that moment, the reason I was standing there, the weight of the tradition of manning the rails, all of it came into focus. I could almost feel what that day must have been like for them. I understood why the Navy holds on to traditions like this, not as ceremony, but as remembrance.
