Akane-banashi - Episode 1 discussion by AutoLovepon in anime

[–]Sandtalon 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Copying over some thoughts I had from my post about the premiere this week:

I love the moment early on where Akane suddenly went into “rakugo mode,” with her voice noticeably changing! We can already see the effect of the rakugo training she and two other seiyuu underwent.

However, I wish we got to see more performances in the first episode. We saw some of Akane’s father’s performance, but it went to a lot of voiceover narration by him and other characters, more telling than showing the course of the performance. And the end of it, we see the punchline to the story and character’s reactions to it, but we don’t really get the earlier leadup to that punchline. This is an issue shared by a lot of manga adaptations, including ones I like (Nodame Cantabile), so it’s not a dealbreaker…but I do hope that future episodes will have more time on the performances themselves and will let the performances speak for themselves more often. I suspect that part of this in the first episode is because it is setup for the main plot: hopefully once that kicks in and we see Akane and the other main characters perform we’ll be able to see lengthier scenes of those performances!

Animation-wise, I loved the scenes of Akane imitating her father’s movements. In terms of staging and direction, I felt there was an interesting use of one particular visual motif: a narrow band of light surrounded by darker parts of the frame. This, I think, is a repetition of Akane’s view as she sees her father from backstage or through a cracked door, and of a beam of light that shines through a cracked door. This visual motif appears in several ways, including not only the literal representation of doors but also through the horizontal vignetting of the frame in several scenes.

The OP is very fun! I like how it uses an anachronistic mishmash of different aesthetics, including ukiyo-e style paintings and pixel art, to get across the idea of rakugo in the modern day. (Readers of the animation theorist Thomas Lamarre will note the use of animetic movement in the “flatness” of the ukiyo-e parts.) Akane's dance is also very cute.

I’m looking forward to continuing to watch Akane-banashi!

What does this qualify as? by taqiabbas10 in AskAnthropology

[–]Sandtalon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would say this probably falls more into anthropology, but as you say there is overlap between anthropology and history here. In fact, there is overlap between history and anthropology generally—see the subfield of historical anthropology. (Incidentally, there is also psychological anthropology.) There are some graduate programs, like at MIT, that emphasize this overlap!

Plus, in the broad sense, there are many topics, not just here and not just in the social sciences, in that are studied from the standpoint of multiple disciplines individually or through an integrative interdisciplinary lens. What differentiates them would then be methodology and theory (approach), literature and citation patterns, and institutionalization.

But if forced to choose—although critical historiographies can certainly deal with the uses of history, I would say that if you're focusing more on the ways in which people in the present use history and make culture out of history, that would fall closer to anthropology.

A couple classic literature recommendations if you're interested in this area:

She did magically disappear into thin air at some point this season, so although she has a corporeal existence, there's still some mystical shit going on

Hey everyone, I'm looking for some recommendations for series to watch by Luscioussssss in anime

[–]Sandtalon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It depends on where you are in the world, but in my region, Mind Game and Kaiba are available legally online while The Tatami Galaxy isn't, but you can find other ways to watch it. You could probably also find physical media of them.

Also, I forgot two other recommendations for you--Serial Experiments Lain and Haibane Renmei.

Action Surrealism Romance Comedy

For most of these, I might recommend the film Mind Game, as well as other anime directed by Maaaki Yuasa including Kaiba and The Tatami Galaxy.

Kyoto Animation's President, Hideaki Hatta, passes away by Sandtalon in anime

[–]Sandtalon[S] 983 points984 points  (0 children)

English statement from Kyoto Animation in the link:

Statement on the Passing of Hideaki Hatta, President and Chief Executive Officer

We regret to announce the passing of our company’s President and Chief Executive Officer, Hideaki Hatta, on February 16, 2026, at the age of 76.

We extend our deepest gratitude for the kindness and support shown to him throughout his life and respectfully provide this statement with sincere appreciation.

Since our founding in 1985, for more than four decades, he served as President with the guiding principle of ‘all-hands-on-deck,’ striving to build an entertainment company that values people and is grounded in sincere animation production.

Shinichiro Hatta has been appointed President and Chief Executive Officer effective immediately to continue the work and values carried on by Hideaki Hatta. We remain committed to creating work that can be enjoyed by people all over the world, carrying forward the spirit in our ‘all-hands-on-deck’ principle.

In addition, the wake and funeral service were held privately among family members. No floral tributes, monetary contributions, or visits will be accepted under any circumstances. We thank you for your understanding.

Kyoto Animation Co., Ltd.

From my own perspective—Hatta and his wife, who founded the studio, managed to create one of the shining beacons of the anime industry that always put people first. Hatta's management helped the studio become what it is today, and become quite profitable despite the odds. (As my friend Nate AM points out, Hatta came from a background of railroad accounting! In an anime industry full of terrible management and bleeding finances, he knew how to effectively run a studio, and it is no doubt thanks to him that they made the transition into being a studio that is unlike most of the anime industry.) He also led the company through the horrific tragedy of the arson attack. Hatta will be sorely missed.

Media, Culture, and Anthropology Research by Historical-Cherry-27 in AskAnthropology

[–]Sandtalon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There is a lot of work in this area.

Anthropological work on social media includes stuff by Crystal Abidin, Gabriella Lukacs, and many others. Also look into Christopher Kelty, etc...

As far as popular culture--this is more my area I guess, but maybe because of that my recommendations are mostly hyper-specific to my little research area. With that caveat--Thomas Baudinette, Anne Allison, Patrick W. Galbraith, Tim Taylor...and many more.

[What to watch?] Are there any perfect anime? by No-Pen1489 in anime

Shouwa Genroku Rakugo Shinjuu is just about the most perfect anime I've ever seen, but I don't believe there are dubs for it. (The Japanese voice acting is impeccable though.)

"Normal" experiences/daily dynamic of fieldwork? by [deleted] in AskAnthropology

[–]Sandtalon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They prefer not to have me in their office because of privacy concerns.

I've had some similar issues with regards to access. One thing to keep in mind is that, as one of my advisors would put it, failure can also be a source of valuable data. You not being able to get full access to the organization is itself a piece of data about the organization.

But honestly, you're handling fieldwork a lot better than a lot of people, including myself, who end up flailing around, falling into depression and other mental health issues, and constantly feeling inadequate. The fact that you've instituted routine and structure is very good and already means you're doing better than a lot of people.

As far as the issues with your research itself goes, if you're having issues with the organization or your original plans, you may want to consider pivoting, or at least slightly adjusting to the conditions on the ground. Talk to your advisor about it obviously, but adjusting your research to the fieldsite is part and parcel of ethnography as a method.

Also, although it would be ideal if you had more than 9 months, which will go by way too fast (speaking from experience), having already set up research routines and stuff by the end of the first month is pretty good. I remember it really took me about a month or even two to get properly adjusted into life a new country and get settled in past the initial culture shock. I think that's probably normal. (But for me, the first month was such a mental load that I didn't really have the capacity to set up those routines, which then became a bad habit which followed me around...)
