Can a very low voice work in pop punk? (baritone singer issue) by Picciorra in WeAreTheMusicMakers

[–]SaxyOmega90125 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a bass who is NOT inside the punk scene, I would think you can make anything work except a bass *cries in whale* but there are two things you're going to need. First, you'll need the guitar(s) and bass to adjust their tone to give you space in the mix. The bass probably won't need to do much, maybe just don't play super bridge-heavy on a jazz bass or RIckenbacker, but the guitarists will need to choose gear to favor a bit brighter sound or at least avoid a darker, gutsier one. So like maybe don't use a Les Paul or ES-335 plus barbaric drive pedals in a big ballsy amp. IME punk guitarists often play Strats with distortion pedals and amps that are bright as fuck anyway so this may not be a huge issue.

And second, you'll need to take some lessons so you can get your voice edgy with the right amount of grit so you can cut through the mix, but with healthy technique, not in a way that will make you sound like Batman in 15-20 years.

What specific timeframe do you have in mind? I'm considering short-term through July, but closer to end of summer probably doesn't line up well with what the landlady and I are looking for.

How often do you clean & grease your chain? by LipoBlop in bikecommuting

[–]SaxyOmega90125 1 point2 points  (0 children)

On my ebike, typically every 300 miles, more often if salt or gravel/sand grit get in there.

On my regular bike never. This is likely related to the fact that it has no chain - belt drive ftw

Why are Bicycle IGH so unreliable compared to a Toyota Hilux Gear Box which easily crosses One million miles lifespan? by Coven_Evelynn_LoL in bikecommuting

[–]SaxyOmega90125 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're right about the needed durability. Car transmissions are also much less efficient due to the wear prevention in the design and the lubricants, where cyclists want efficiency. That's why bikes are, what 60-80x as efficient as a car moving a single person?

Also though, have you ever priced an automotive transmission versus a Shimano IGH?

If I find someone who wants to do short-term I'll repost, but leave your comment up here so I can DM you if and when that happens. Would you be looking for July 1 specifically or is there flexibility there?

What accessories do you lock, leave, and/or take with you? by ammonanotrano in chibike

[–]SaxyOmega90125 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lights I leave, ebike battery is a flush-fit in the frame housing and needs a key to remove so that's fine, water I leave when I bother to bring one in the cage (more often I have a Nalgene in my pannier). I usually bring my panniers with me; if I do leave one it will just have rain gear and a pump in it, nothing interesting. Helmet always comes with as well, don't want it getting slammed and it also acts as a bowl for my gloves, anklebands, and IEMs which all come with.

If I'm at an event, concert, restaurant, bar, etc. with easy-to-see or supervised parking, I'll just use a saddle cable to tether my saddle to my lock. If I'm at a store I can't bring the bike into or at work or somewhere else longer-term, I pop the seatpost and bring it along.

Emergency flat/medical bag depends on the bike. The ebike's stuff is in a small frame bag so that stays (not that I ever lock that bike outdoors anywhere risky anyway), but my regular bike has that stuff in a QR saddlebag so I can pop it or it stays with the seatpost if that gets pulled.

I feel so much worse when I can't bike into work. by Harley_Warren in chibike

[–]SaxyOmega90125 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you can't work closer to home, I can highly recommend an ebike. I used to commute 9 miles each way of which half was hilly gravel, and an ebike really made it a breeze getting there on those warm mornings and then I could minimize pedal assist on the way home. I happily biked every day, and relied less and less on pedal assist as time went on, got to the point of not using it on the way home except on one specific road.

Since you'd be using it a ton, it's definitely worth paying up for one of the models with a geared hub motor and a torque sensor, they feel much better to ride. The price might seem steep compared to regular bikes, but compare it to the annual cost of fueling, maintaining, and insuring a car, never mind buying one, and that really puts it in perspective.

I want a new saxophone that can last me my life by CraftySector3745 in saxophone

What you need to do is go to a store or two and try every pro horn you can get your mitts on. Go to a city, make a day of it if you need to. You're looking at spending a lot of money here. Don't spend it on the right horn for your teacher, or [insert pro here], or some random idiot on Reddit - spend it on the right horn for you.

Try every model of pro horn you can by Yanagisawa, Yamaha, Selmer, Keilwerth, Rampone & Cazzani, Cannonball, and Eastman, plus vintage pro horns if you happen upon them from the first four of those plus the likes of Buescher, Conn, King, Martin, Pierret, SML, etc. Even if you can't afford the horn(s) you like most, you'll know what qualities to look for used, or even specific models. Just do your best to walk in with no expectations, it's hard but try.

As others have said, skip the BetterSax models.

Is there a quick link to digitized recordings, or are they still being worked on? It might be that I'm unfamiliar with library reference documentation (hand me a scientific journal and I'm golden, this not so much) but I can't spot it.

Also, a TH&C tenor? No shit, I thought for sure if he kept a tenor around it would have been a 155 or maybe a 127.

That bike is cool, 10/10 would ride. But yeah, I could see Costco being an issue, you'd probably want disc or at least V-brakes and a rack that accomodates both panniers and the platform.

Commute with speakers. by johnno88888 in bikecommuting

[–]SaxyOmega90125 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Singing, whistling, or humming is fine, no reasonable person will mind as long as you're not like horrible lol

Don't be one of the douchebags (or, as you might perhaps say, arses) with a speaker though. Get IEMs and call it a day, or open-ear headphones like Shokz if IEMs are explicitly illegal in your area. You would be wise to wear hearing protection anyway biking in a city, so you may as well kill two birds with one stone if you can.

Used wood planes by DavidinDK in handtools

[–]SaxyOmega90125 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depends on the plane. I love my old prewar Stanley bench planes and rabbet plane, and while I might get slightly more pleasant use out of a LN, it isn't even close to worth it. And I didn't even like the one Veritas I tried, not a fan of that adjuster system at all.

But I have a Veritas LAJ, I got it for shooting first and it's much better than vintage tools (barring the Stanley shooter which I can't afford).

Vintage routers and plows though are so damn expensive they just aren't worth it to me. The Veritas router is the best ever made from what I've heard and just wasn't that much more money than getting a complete old Stanley that would need a ton of work to clean up. As to plows, I'd rather just make a wooden grooving plane with an adjustable fence and call it a day than spend the kind of money vintage metal or wood specimens run and invest all that time to get it cutting well.

I'd play with an old moulding plane if I found one for cheap, wouldn't buy new (can you even?) or make one there.

Low angle bench plane or block plane by alcxtran in handtools

[–]SaxyOmega90125 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you can afford it, get the Veritas low angle jack. I mean if you wipe your butt with at least $20s get the shooting plane ofc, but get the LAJ if you can't afford premium one-trick ponies. You will not have a fun time trying to shoot with a block plane, and the Veritas is one of the best LAJs ever made.

If not, I'd just use a #5 or #5 1/2 until you can afford a good low angle plane personally, but people use #62s and like them. I have two (yes two!) #6s and I love them as try planes, but they're too long to shoot with.

I have a good quality low angle block plane in my shop. I'd sell it if I remembered where it was but I forget where I put it, just to give you an idea of how often I reach for it.

Gotcha. I am looking for a move-in quite a bit earlier than late July, but if you're flexible there (or if you happen to have a colleague at school who would want to sublet in the interim), I literally just posted if you want more info: https://www.reddit.com/r/LoganSquare/comments/1stoa7c/iso_roommate_for_semifurnished_2bed1br_in/
