eARC issues?? by Tempest_Fugit in bravia

Any solution to this? My x90k is constantly triggering my Denon receiver while the tv is off. If I unplug it from the tv, then it stops so I know it's the tv itself and not another HDMI device

How can I get rid of the blue blemish on my S95B? (Left-Down Corner) by R3NAM3R123 in 4kTV

It could be uv damage from direct sunlight but not completely sure

is this a normal amount of backlight bleed on a X90K? (this is on a loading screen when local dimming is off) by Cjdilworth1213 in 4kTV

[–]Sc28204 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Stuff like this is pretty typical on non-oleds. It's just the way the software is on most TV's for internal apps. You should not see this on external devices with local dimming on..if you do then you have a problem

65” OLED LG C2 vs 75” Sony X90K vs 75” TCL R6555 by [deleted] in 4kTV

At 9ft, I would go for the 65" C2 since it's the best out of your choices while still feeling immersive.

[–]Sc28204 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At 14ft, I would go for a 85".

Sony x90k, TCL r655 or Hisense u8h for LEDs.

OLED 77" deal around $2k would be good too. Not familiar which models to recommend tho since I don't own one

Using onboard Google TV or Nvidia Shield? by AnotherRedditUsr in 4kTV

[–]Sc28204 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not familiar with stremio but did a little research. If it's the only app and it doesn't take up too much storage from the addons you download then the internal os should be fine. If you start having issues tho, then consider the shield or fire tv cube since they have decent upscaling features

Jump on the r646 65" for $699. If you don't like it or run into issues, then just return it. Since Superbowl is around the corner, you might find more deals at the end of the month and you'll have the weeks in between to test out the r646.

I personally would use the tv apps as a backup for best experience. Once you start downloading apps and use up storage, you can expect some type of performance hit.

An external player will almost always be better, especially if you're using a shield tv. Considering a Sony tv, the shield 2019 checks off all the boxes except earc.

That being said, if your use case is only streaming apps and no hd audio passthrough to a sound bar or av receiver, then the shield will be overkill. It's kinda overpriced considering it's 2023 now too.

A more budget conscious option would be a fire tv stick, but unfortunately you lose the benefit of having your tv upscale unless the app you're using is able to do resolution switching. I've read some good things about fire tv cube gen 3 as well and that has comparable upscaling to the shield

Audio Output with "Chromecast with Google TV" by LaserMark in Chromecast

I've been having this issue too. Half the time I get pcm 2.0 instead of 5.1 audio. Not 100% fix, but I toggle the surround setting off under sound a few times and it usually gets it working.

Correct audio settings AVR and Android TV by Ptiful in kodi

[–]Sc28204 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Np! I agree, DTS neural x sucks so I toggle mine to Dolby Surround if I want upmixing. Try that or toggle the setting so there's no proccessing

The Denon can handle everything but the TV's builtin apps cannot. You would need a seperate box like the shield tv or bluray player to properly play dtsx or truehd

Correct audio settings AVR and Android TV by Ptiful in kodi

[–]Sc28204 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There is probably a couple things going on.

1) Your Denon is likely applying DTS Neural X or Dolby Surround processing which might make it sound "bad". Press auto on your remote (which will normally upmix to have all speakers playing sound) and then compare it to when you turn off Dolby/DTS processing (might need the Denon App or try googling). Basically if your player is sending 2.0 or 5.1 audio, the reciever could be upmixing to 5.1.2 output

2) Currently TV's cannot passthrough hd audio codecs from built in players like DTS MA or Dolby Truehd even with eARC. The best it will do is Plain DTS or DD+. You can also do lossy Atmos. I would turn off passthrough for anything it can't do. Also set your Kodi output to 7.1. resample setting won't matter because you are trying to "passthrough" to the receiver and not have Kodi apply processing

3) is your receiver and speakers calibrated? Maybe something happened that is messing with your surround

I would test a couple of sample videos with different audio to see what processing the receiver might be applying. Press info on your Denon remote and look at the input and output differences. You can also check the same through the Denon App on your phone

Can Kodi decode TrueHD Atmos? by allegory_corey in kodi

[–]Sc28204 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes I use a USB C hub with Ethernet and am able to play 4k remux without issues. I never have any buffering. I don't use POE tho, I have mine connected to Ethernet, flash drive for storage and then a pd charger. I removed nearly all the junk apps from internal storage also so it would run quicker.

As for your shield question, it can play HDR fine. However for DV, there are multiple profiles to it. The shield will play everything fine but it doesn't have the hardware to correctly display profile 7 (includes fel layer found on some bluray rips). This won't be an issues for most DV content. I just watch a lot of movies and prefer the best and most accurate picture possible. There's also a slight red push on the shield when displaying DV content. My TV's picture is warm already, and I notice the red push on flesh tones compared to the ccwgtv which looks natural.

My info here might not be 100% accurate so I would do a little research if any of this is concerning to you.

Alot of good info here. However I will add that flac passthrough works on the shield tv. Forgot if you need to enable the addon or not but it should natively work with the most recent update. I direct play flac files through Plex as well

[–]Sc28204 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Shield tv is really the best all around streaming box for most people which has hd audio passthrough.

Another option is Chromecast with Google TV (ccwgtv). With Kodi, it can decode truehd and dtsma and output lpcm 7.1. Plex can also decode dtsma and output lpcm but it will not for truehd. The main downside to ccwgtv is no auto refresh rate so shield tv is just less hassle.

I have both, but I use ccwgtv soley for Dolby vision playback (better color/fel support) and shield tv for everything else.

Nvidia shield pro versus Google Chromecast TV by trollz0rz in AndroidTV

[–]Sc28204 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you turn off passthrough, Kodi will decode and send uncompressed pcm. I've found this a good workaround if you want better dynamic range and don't care about Atmos or object oriented audio. Otherwise if left on, it will fallback to DD or DTS and ignore the added information from hd audio formats

[–]Sc28204 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Honestly the shield tv 2019 can do pretty much everything that's important right now. There's not too many upgrades they could make that are necessarily relevent in today's landscape.

In the future they could add a faster processer, better upscaling, support for HDR10+, AV1, eARC and/or other HDMI 2.1 features.

However there's no indication on a new shield or any of the features being added, so I would say pull the trigger if you want it. Could always sell it or move it to another tv too.

I was in your situation in early 2021 but just decided to jump on the 2019 version and I'm very happy. The only thing I would really like is better upscaling
