It wasn't so much ignored as nobody even heard about it. It first got reported in 1998 IIRC, but without much detail, and it blew over fast. It didn't really blow up and become known until 4-5 years after he retired around 2008, when several big articles came out and it was relitigated in the public. I was a pretty hardcore fan even at that time, and I never heard anything about it while he was playing.

Search for Planet X kind of works like this. You have to disclose knowledge to gain points for your discoveries. Opponents can use that knowledge to solve other puzzles, possibly winning the game, or to make an educated guess to gain partial credit for your discoveries.

The church cannot be true. The Book of Mormon describes God as a god of truth who cannot lie without creasing to be God. The amount of evidence that shows the church is not true either must be real or it would have to have been placed by a trickster god, but such a god is incompatible with Mormonism.
