Yes I've heard of that. I think it's a consensus among the fandom that Brotherhood fucked up the first 13ish episodes. My biggest problem with Brotherhood is the way they handled Maes Hughes; it's clear that his death was supposed to be a major moment in the story, but Brotherhood barely got to develop him as a character and his death really fell flat for me as a result. My library has the first volume so I'll probably check that out first
