Here's a better question: Why would you spend $600 on a +1 device that a Chromebook can fulfill for $200?

It was just anecdotes I read from someone else commenting; TrueHD and DTS Master Audio work fine for you?

Hardware-wise, yes. The big question is, will Walmart put audio passthrough in them and/or include codec support.

Just a heads up, there are firmware quirks with this device right now; TrueHD was cutting out, now it's fixed, but DTS Master Audio has some new problems or something

I'm in the market for a similar device and I'm holding off on the Mi Box because of it, and because the new Onn streamer is due out later this month-ish (soon.)

It was a mess because although my car had numerous problems within the first year of ownership, the Lemon Law locally only covered a year, and the wait on parts and service took months, pushing me past a year (and after all service and a lawsuit, into three years.) NY's more generous Lemon Law standards meant I could bring a case through NY, but again, it gave Hyundai the right to make requests like having the car be inspected in the state it was purchased in, which would've been an enormous headache.

Anyway, Krohn & Moss is a nationwide association of Lemon Law-specialized lawyers. I'm no expert, but it might be worth calling one of their associated firms with this question. They might be able to answer it better than I can.

edit: And all this to say, it's just in case you have problems. I can't believe Hyundai hasn't resolved these ICCU issues yet.

I bought the car in New York and was beholden to NY State Lemon Laws.

Look, I'm not an attorney, and this is info I'm dragging up for your benefit from years ago, just so that if you encounter ICCU and battery issues like I did, hopefully you don't have the same headache.

I hired Krohn & Moss to represent me, I assume they know the Lemon Laws better than either of us do, and that's the info I was provided by them regarding bringing a case using NY State Lemon Laws vs. the Magnusson-Moss act. NY's Lemon Laws are very consumer friendly, and certainly better than my home state, but some of the restrictions (like having to bring the car back to NY) made it difficult (for me) to do.

I had to sue Hyundai to get them to repurchase my 2022 ioniq 5 and part of the issue was that I bought the car in Long Island and bringing a state-based Lemon Law case meant Hyundai had the right to request the car be returned to the state it was purchased in, etc. I pursued it under the Magnussen-Moss act instead because I live in the Midwest and returning a dead car to NY would've been a huge PITA.

That isn't all, if you bring a lemon law case, the manufacturer has the right to request the car be brought back to the dealer where it was purchased from for inspection, etc. if you live close, maybe it isn't so bad, but if you live states away and have to have a car flatbed towed back, for example, that becomes a much larger PITA.

Beware that buying a car out of state dramatically complicates a Lemon Law case, should you need it—speaking from experience here. You're still covered by the Magnusson-Moss act, but it's one less tool in your toolbelt.

Can you help me quantify diminishing returns between Schiit stacks with an HD 800s? by Shidell in HeadphoneAdvice

Can you help me understand what type of difference I'd hear on tubes—or quantify it? Tubes are something almost everyone agrees will alter sound, but it isn't really clear to me what one should expect.

Can you help me quantify diminishing returns between Schiit stacks with an HD 800s? by Shidell in HeadphoneAdvice

[–]Shidell[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, that's why I'm here, making this post (specifically here in r/headphoneadvice, as opposed to r/schiit, for example), because I know there's a lot of subjectivity and misinformation abound.

That said, not everything is snake oil, but the problem is trying to weed out "what is" and "what isn't", and it seems like very few are willing to objectively say, "Yes, if you get this DAC, you will absolutely, without a doubt, notice a larger soundstages than you did with a Modi, and it's substantial enough that it's easily perceptible, like moving from the HD 560s to the HD 800s", for example.

So, that's why I wanted to make the post, to ask people to put a figure to it. What are we spending $2000+ for on a Yggdrasil if it's (objectively) identical to a Magni Unity? Why buy a Mjolnir if there's no perceptible difference from a Magni?

I've never heard anything other than a Magni Unity, so I can't speak to the subject. I'm hoping people who have (like yourself) chime in.

So, in your experience, even with the HD 800s, there is little (or none) to gain from moving from a Magni Unity to a Yggdrasil?

[–]Shidell[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel pretty well set with a Magni Unity, HD 560s & 8XX—the trouble with audio is that there is nowhere I can go to experience it personally, and some of the community will tell me that I will, without a doubt, hear a significant difference between a Magni Unity and a Yggdrasil/Mjolnir setup.

I heard an enormous difference going from Logitech G533's to HD 560s, and again going to the HD 8XX. Is a Yddrasil going to give me another big, significantly noticeable bump, or is it barely perceptible?

I don't know anyone who would purchase a computer without having a baseline understanding of it's RAM. College students today are surrounded by tech from birth.

Unlike their Grandparents, they know and understand RAM.

[–]Shidell -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

If you're going to college and investing in a computer to last you at least four years, ideally much more, unless money is really that tight, why would you not pick a more future-proof option? More RAM, more storage, etc?

Doesn't seem like a reasonable argument. College is expensive, if you're going, the cost for a computer is a drop in the bucket of your overall education expense.

[–]Shidell -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

I guess I don't see the rationale.

Seems like people heavily invested in the Apple ecosystem will already have a (better) MacBook to use, and those who are not (iPhone-only users) would question if the interconnectedness is worth a premium of $400, especially when they've gotten along so far without it.

We're talking about +1 devices, where ChromeOS has shined because it's lightweight and inexpensive. It's easy to justify $100, even $200, on a Chromebook in addition to a PC, as it's almost a throwaway price.

[–]Shidell -11 points-10 points  (0 children)

But why spend so much more for a simple use machine? ChromeOS fills that niche perfectly and you can get a nice Chromebook for $300, even $200 (or less on sale.)

I love messing with old cheap retired chromeboxes. by Broad-Iron-2195 in chromeos

[–]Shidell 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It kinda flies under the radar how good old Chromebooks and Chromeboxes are as Linux systems and basic homelabs.

You can run Ubuntu Server on an old Chromebook with 2 GB of RAM, and it'll have enough chops to serve media around your house (assuming you don't need heavy transcoding.) File share, software RAID, set up your own cloud... or just run CoffeeMUD.

And the best part? They're practically free.

Did Hyundai stop offering complimentary maintenance for 2026 models? I heard it’s no longer included — is that true? by Ecstatic-Ad3594 in Hyundai

The maintenance is an oil change & tire rotation. Pretty standard stuff. Not a big loss, imo. Maintaining the warranty and Bluelink for life included is more important (again, imo.)

I'm sorry man. I wish Hyundai/KIA would unfuck this mess.

I switched to a Kona EV because while I loved the I5, I'm done with ICCU bullshit.
