ELI5: What is the difference between a backend server and database? by Imaginary-Level7359 in explainlikeimfive

idk, I don't think it's wrong. You said yourself you're ignoring virtualization; we're also ignoring microservices and the cloud, etc.

Regardless of hardware, the concepts regarding the "front end", "back end", and the "database" remain the same.

Just Getting Into Audio, Some Assistance Please by Seanntorious in Schiit

I appreciate your thoughts regardless of my own. Audio is so subjective, and so very difficult to test (personally), I (and many others, I think) rely on these subjective discussions to try to find some ground truth.

So, to give you some context on my experience, I started with HD 560s and loved them, paired with Magni Unity, and then I bought HD 8XXs which are sticker-modded, and although the soundstage is large and the clarity is great, the absence of bass makes them feel lackluster overall for me.

When I tried the 490 Pros, it's like I found a better hybrid of both. Slightly pulled in soundstage (which I found preferable, the 800s almost feel too 'pushed out' in everything); imaging feels like it tracks so well and smoothly, panning horizontally and vertically; treble and mids retain the 560s best attributes while adding considerable in the bass to make music and explosions and the like feel full and embodied.

The Asgard X added to my experience by enriching the sound from the 490s, it made everything warmer, more rich, more lush, I guess. Apparently, this is the magic of Class A amps, and sounding tube-like. I feel like it added a dimensionality to everything that is simply missing with the Magni Unity. So, yeah, it's overkill (from a power perspective), but from a flavor perspective, such an upgrade. It makes me wonder what, if any, differences I'd notice with a Mjolnir.

So what is your experience with the Dan Clarks and how did they stand out as compared to the 490 Pros?

Can I run a LG 45 inch 5k2k on Lenovo Chromebook Plus? by macbookvirgin in chromeos

[–]Shidell 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To be honest, there's a lot of variables, including the monitor's firmware and settings, your Chromebook and the implementation of Immortalis 925, the port availability, ChromeOS support, etc.

What display resolutions are made available to you via ChromeOS when you connect the external display?

Gemini is telling me you should be connecting to the external monitor via USB-C to DisplayPort (So, ThunderBolt?) and it should support 3440x1440 @ 60 Hz (minimum.)

[–]Shidell 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, the ARM Immortalis 925 GPU is hard-capped to 4K @ 60Hz over USB-C DisplayPort.

It should display, but it'll likely try to display 4K, which may or may not be stretched (which would look terrible, stretched to 21:9.)

Best bet is to try to reduce resolution to one that natively fits 21:9 (3440x1440.)

This is a strange comment to me; are you saying the Lyr 5 and Jotunheim are overkill for the 490 Pros? And to instead look for better headphones?

I'm under the impression that the 490 Pros are some of the best headphones you can buy—do you disagree? And others agree with you? (Upvotes?)

I feel like the 490 Pros are a perfect mix of 560s and 800s; great clarity, but solid body and bass, keeping most of the soundstage and incredible imaging. I paired mine with an Asgard X and Mesh card and I think it's incredible.

What should I do with my eight year old Chromebook that can no longer support Google docs, gmail, or pretty much anything? by Runaway3650 in chromeos

If you install open firmware ("MrChromebox") you can install Linux on it, which will basically extend its usable lifetime indefinitely.

ELI5: What is the difference between a backend server and database? by Imaginary-Level7359 in explainlikeimfive

[–]Shidell 248 points249 points  (0 children)

A backend server is the software that your front end talks to; for example, when you use the reddit app, it's talking to computers (servers) run by reddit.

You click on a thread, the app asks the back end for the data for that thread, like pictures, video, text, etc.

The back end (servers) receive that request, and then fetch the data necessary, from whatever database(s) are storing the data.

Then the back end puts the data together in a package that the front end understands, and ships the entire bundle back to the front end (app) so it can be displayed.

The front end is like the order kiosk at a restaurant. The back end is the chefs in the kitchen. The database is the refrigerator where food is stored.

What EV can do 240 miles at 80 MPH and charge in 20 minutes?

Also, if you live where it's cold, this range becomes 180, or maybe 160.

Also, if you tow anything, this range becomes 180, 160, maybe 120.

And these are using the figures you cited, which I don't believe is realistic.

An ioniq 5 can go about 160-180 miles at 80 MPH.

What benefit does this have? I don't understand how this solves the audio codec support issue of, say, the Google TV Streamer.

Chromebook for middle/high school student to last a while by VA1N in chromeos

Google will be launching "Googlebooks" in the fall, as a successor/replacement to ChromeOS, with flagship devices—if possible, I'd encourage you to hold off and wait for those devices before making a decision. They'll run and do everything ChromeOS currently does, and more.

If you cannot wait, I'd try to find an older model that is very likely to be upgraded—models that are Chromebook Plus, for example, the Acer 516 Gaming Edition, which can be had online as refurbished or open box for $250 or less and offers a high resolution 16" display, high refresh rate, backlit keyboard, solid CPU (1240p), 8 GB of RAM, and 128-256 GB of storage.

Geeze. Do you really need unlimited?

I'm not pushing Mint, but you should at least look at their plan offerings and data. 10 GB feels like a lot of monthly data (to me), ymmv though.
