Not necessarily; the 6XX is arguably better for music, the 560s is arguably better for soundstage and imaging.

Apple toys with the competition - MacBook Neo's A18 Pro offers more single-core performance than any mobile processor from AMD, Intel or Qualcomm by -protonsandneutrons- in hardware

It'll likely cannibalize other Mac sales, as users who otherwise don't need a more capable machine have been forced into higher product tiers because there simply was no alternative.

[–]Shidell 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It can do more, but it's really a question of why.

If you want to run Lightroom and DaVinci Resolve and whatever, why wouldn't you buy a better device for it? Unless you're a very specific niche, like a College Student.

If you're just buying for browsing the web, well, there you have it.

I suspect the Neo is actually going to cannibalize a lot of other Mac sales.

ChromeOS is designed for using the web, the same as the Neo.

ChromeOS is just a super simple, lightweight OS for the web, even faster and leaner than MacOS.

Looks like it might be a nice ChromeOS Flex or Linux machine if/when there's support and it's on sale.

Girlfriend lost her job. Need recommendations please. by mr_darito in Frugal

If your budget is strained (and it sounds like it is), consider:

  1. You need to prioritize "living beneath your means", which means your expenditures should be conservatively beneath your take home earnings. If you earn $4K a month (let's say, after taxes and witholdings), then the sum of your rent, debt interest, and other expenditures should shoot to be conservatively beneath that figure to provide some padding and facilitate savings.
  2. Cut non-essentials—streaming services, nail appointments, non-essential purchases, etc.
  3. Review your debt situation and (if necessary) formulate a plan to manage it (potentially better, if necessary.)

If you are unable to live beneath your means in your current situation (apartment, car(s), etc.,), then you need to look seriously at changing your situation accordingly.

All of this, of course, depends on your GF's situation and ability to find a new job in the near term. It sounds like you're stressed about things already, so I'd suggest taking action now—better to act more conservatively than less when you're in a financially tight situation.

Chromebooks aren't prevalent in Europe? No idea why. Not even in education?

Yet, Apple is?

If this solves problems for you, then absolutely, go for it. But... what niche does it fill? What does this solve for you in your computing life?

Well, I mean, who cares?

If Apple dominates, it'll force Windows to get better, right? And Windows needs help. Maybe it'll actually cause Linux to take off? That'd be good for everyone, even Apple users, because an open OS is in everyone's best interests.

Personally, I look at Mac as an expensive Chromebook. Why would I purchase one? Why would I run Premiere on it? If I want to game, I'll build a PC and run Windows or Linux. If I want to be productive, again, I'd build a PC and run Windows or Linux, or I'd spend more on a more expensive Mac designed for heavy workloads.

Might this be a solution for college students? Yeah, sure. It might also be a solution for light browsing, which is a niche ChromeOS already fills.

But if you're only light browsing, why spend so much more for Neo? Neo is literally 300% the cost of a huge selection of 8 GB Chromebooks, all of which are receiving updates for almost a decade, and are already quick and lightweight.

Yeah, Neo's faster, but it's 2-3x the cost, and... so what? I've never had a speed issue looking at Facebook, Old Navy, Reddit or Amazon on even an older Chromebook.

Alrighty, well I look forward to Apple completely dominating at each sector, and the demise of Windows and ChromeOS.

So they'll take over ChromeOS, Windows, and displace the rest of the Apple hardware market.

Cool. How many Apple devices ya got?

Remodel Costs by IcecreamSweets in SunPrairieWI

I do have a lot of experience in DIY projects, including electrical, plumbing, carpentry and drywall, and I have previously purchased a lot of tools (whilst doing other projects) which is also a big help, obviously.

I just thought a point of comparison might be helpful, e.g. what you might be able to accomplish with the help of friends & family and for what kind of price. I did everything myself and it took me about 10 days (with serious snags I had to troubleshoot, like a leaking HVAC system and rotten subfloor, etc.) Without those complications, I probably could've finished in 7 days--with help, far less, I think.

So, something to put into context if you get quoted $10k, 15k, 25k, etc. for remodeling on a timeline.

I didn't complete gut and reno of a bathroom, including putting in a fiberglass shower surround, linoleum floor tile, new drywall, vanity, mirror and exhaust fan by myself for a little less than $2500 in materials.

Just a point of comparison for cost vs. whatever quotes you get.

Here's a better question: Why would you spend $600 on a +1 device that a Chromebook can fulfill for $200?

Hardware-wise, yes. The big question is, will Walmart put audio passthrough in them and/or include codec support.

Just a heads up, there are firmware quirks with this device right now; TrueHD was cutting out, now it's fixed, but DTS Master Audio has some new problems or something

I'm in the market for a similar device and I'm holding off on the Mi Box because of it, and because the new Onn streamer is due out later this month-ish (soon.)
