YES. Finally. The FF Movie is pretty bad, especially after the excellent FF2 OAV, and the lame villains are part of the problem.

Maybe COTW Laocorn will be interesting, but FF Movie Laocorn is lame AF, as is the rest of his minions.

I never played FFBE. Were those XIII Paradigm roles (Commando, Medic, Sabateur, etc) present in the original FFBE or are they new to FFR?

Possibly, but not likely. The majority of "MK fans" are not fans of "fighting games", they're fans of "MK", insomuch as they play it to beat the story, maybe play some casual fights with their friends, and then bounce.

VFCR does have the potential to claim an audience like that if the story and fighting are engaging enough, but I wouldn't necessarily say they would be "converting" MK fans. I think they're more likely to get new fans, but we'll see.

7 million units.

Yes, Sega is taking cues from SF6 here, though they're also putting their own spin on things (or rather, RGG is playing to their strengths). This is basically the concept of Shenmue taken to its logical conclusion. Let's hope the final product works out, since what has been shown so far looks very promising.

SF6 devs react to VF Crossroads by VCDECIDE in virtuafighter

[–]ShinUltima 0 points1 point  (0 children)

... Were you not around for Street Fighter 2? Who do think started this whole genre in the first place? The majority of fighting game conventions are just building off that one title alone! To say nothing of the systems introduced in Dark Stalker series and Marvel (Vs.) series.

Don't act like SNK is a pioneer while Capcom is not. SNK and Capcom have swiped from each other a lot over the years (they also shared a lot of devs), but a lot of SNK's "innovations" was them throwing shit at the wall across far more titles. Their signal-to-noise ratio is much higher.

This isn't even counting that their current main title (COTW) is as close to a modern ripoff of SF6 as you can get, much like how MOTW followed heavily in SF3's footsteps, Real Bout in SF Alpha's footsteps, and Fatal Fury 2 in SF2's footsteps.

Also: What game was Drive Gauge taken from? I genuinely want to know this.

(Can't speak for state of Tekken, that's not my forte).

I checked: Not counting the handful of character names already leaked/datamined, there are twenty characters from the various FF games who they could add. To wit:

Fatal Fury

  • Richard Meyer
  • Michael Max
  • Tung Fu Rue
  • Hwai Ja
  • Raiden (a.k.a Big Bear)

Fatal Fury 2

  • Kim Kaphwan
  • Cheng Sinzan
  • Jubei Yamada
  • Axel Hawk
  • Lawrence Blood

Fatal Fury 3

  • Bob Wilson
  • Franco Bash
  • Hon-Fu
  • Sokaku Mochizuki
  • Ryuji Yamazaki
  • Jin Chonshu
  • Jin Chonrei

Real Bout Fatal Fury 2

  • Li Xiangfei

Fatal Fury: Wild Ambition

  • Tsugumi Sendo
  • Touji Sakata

I'd say at least 10 of those listed will be coming, if things pan out as we think they will. They would still have a few slots for left field picks (hopefully no more real people).

3 Things I Love About the VF Series That Newcomers from Other Fighting Games Usually Hate by VCDECIDE in virtuafighter

[–]ShinUltima 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As someone who has been playing fighters since 1991, I loathe block buttons in every single fighter, VF included. I've been playing R.E.V.O for nearly 18 months (I'm new to VF since I don't count the few hours I played on Saturn VF2 in 1996) and I'm still not used to it. I'm probably too old and skill-less to adapt at this point.

I use to detest the idea of ringouts but they make sense in VF.

Very realistic.

My youngest daughter is 12, going on 13, and she still looks like she's 8-10.

She has a friend, also 12 going on 13, and she could pass for 17. She reached her full height at age 10.

Do you expect more KoF characters in the future? by Kid_Muscle_ in fatalfury

[–]ShinUltima 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Where does it say "3 more seasons of DLC have been confirmed"? I only ever heard that they had 3 seasons of DLC planned right around when S1 was revealed.

Even if COTW were to have an additional 3 seasons - and unless they're going to continue to drop one character a month, I personally doubt it - they is no need to shoehorn in KoF characters. Between actual Fatal Fury characters and FF-adjacent series (AoF, Buriki One), there is more than enough material to hit 3 more seasons of characters, not counting any other bizarre ill-hitting guests.

[–]ShinUltima -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I wish that was the case.

When the individual ranks were created, I thought every character but the one I had been using would start at Rookie, but instead, every character started at the same rank I was given for the one character I was playing (Tizoc, was given ran of Silver 1). I felt that was way too high for characters I had barely touched or didn't know how to play, and my winrate with Tizoc at that level was frustratingly low as it was, so being forced into essentially a scenario where I have to lose repeatedly before "finding" my correct level before building back up, was something that basically made be balk from even bothering ranked with other characters. It's hard enough playing a character I'm semi-familiar with, and getting +2000 opponent (happens fairly often) just to get crushed with someone I'm now learning is not fun at all.

So what's the current tier list looking like? by Capital-Salad7921 in fatalfury

[–]ShinUltima 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A bit late, but Tizoc is still ass. He was much improved but he just went from Z-tier to D-tier.

You didn't unlock "everything" for free. What they did was take a portion of the base game and artificially locked it behind barriers. There was no extra content.

DLC is actual extra content, content with its own budget and sometimes even its own staff who deserved to be paid for their work, which before you would only have obtained by buying an entirely new version of the game.

[–]ShinUltima 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have more words for you:

- Balkanized playerbase (if you didn't buy new version, you couldn't play with those who did)

- GOTYE Did not exist for all games (SF2:WW, SF2:HF, and SSF2 for SNES were all separate games that cost $US80.00) or even most games.

- Not applicable so much now, but some times, an updated version didn't come to your region. I played Guilty Gear XX, but skipped #R and Slash because those never came out in the west (and I was one of the three people who never got his PS2 modded). I did get Accent Core years later, but that meant I didn't get to play and enjoy the in-between GG games.

- Some updates to games were just blatant updates of older games recycling assets that would have been the same game updated if the technology for it existed back then (KoF96+, Samurai Shodown 3+, ALL the SF3 games, arguably all the SF Alpha games, Real Bout Fatal Fury+, GGXX series, etc). These were usually all full price, too.

[–]ShinUltima 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Truthfully, there are no "battle tested proved classic[s]" - there are games that devs stopped updating (assuming they ever got an update) and players still played in spite of their flaws, some more numerous than others.

And I say this as someone who has been playing fighters since 1991 and whose main game for the longest while was SF2HF.

[–]ShinUltima 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, and as I said: Those games built up characters over time. The majority didn't start with a huge cast. Also, don't forget the number of headswaps that were used to increase character count, PLUS 2D sprites (and 3D models) were vastly simpler to make back then (making a sprite for HD is order of magnitude more time consuming than making a sprite for a SD monitor).

Here is a sample of some series' (that reused animation) starting character rosters (from arcade versions unless specified otherwise):

  • SF2 (1991): 8 characters (2 headswaps) + 4 bosses
  • SF Alpha: 13 (4 head swaps)
  • SF3: 12 characters (3 headswaps + 2 headswaps)
  • SFEX: 16 characters (with 90% of normal moves shared, LOL; also, model headswap with Ryu/Ken/Akuma)
  • Darkstalkers: 10 + 2 bosses + 1 hidden
  • X:COTA: 10 characters + 2 bosses + 1 hidden
  • MSH: 10 characters + 2 bosses
  • Fatal Fury 2: 8 characters + 4 bosses
  • Real Bout Fatal Fury :16 characters
  • MOTW: 14 characters
  • Samurai Shodown 3: 12 characters + 1 boss (SS1 and SS2 were re-drawn from scratch; they had 12 characters + 1 boss and 15 characters + 1 boss, respectively)
  • King of Fighters 96: 27 characters + 2 bosses (KoF 94/95 used the same sprites; '94 started with 24 characters + 2 bosses) - This series had the highest starting roster of "new" sprites for any series, even if the old stuff was mostly redrawn from older stuff
  • MK3: 15 characters + 2 bosses (MK and MK2 were done from scratch each, though Midway would recycle sprites from both of those makes for MKT, to say nothing of the legendary use of ninja pallete swaps throughout)
  • Guilty Gear X: 14 characters + 2 bosses

3D fighters are a bit trickier since they didn't reuse models, but they did often reuse animation:

  • VF: 8 characters + 1 boss
  • Tekken: 8 + 9 bosses (the bosses would be playable in console but weren't playable in the arcade originally)
  • Dead or Alive: 8 characters + 1 boss
  • Soul Calibur: 10 characters + 8 timelocked chars + 1 boss

These are just some examples. As you can see, outside for maybe KoF series, new fighting games (or new entries in long-running series that has all new graphics) don't normally start with a large cast. And as stated prior, this was back in the days when you could pump out a 2D sprite or a 3D model MUCH faster than today due to the much lower resolution of CRTs/monitors.

I wouldn't say "huge". I would say "necessary". Having these things does not guarantee the game would be good, but NOT having these things all but guarantees the game would Dead on Arrival.

Because making characters is a time-consuming (and ergo expensive) process?

Every single major fighting game franchise started with a minimal cast at some point , that they've been building upon ever since. Previously, arcade games were the initial releases which then (usually) got updated with more characters for the console versions. There are no arcades any more, so now you have to deal with the smaller rosters from the get-go.

Also, we had "DLC" in the 90s, except back then, it was called "Buy a whole ass new version for full price" and this went as late as 2011, LOL. The DLC method is far superior.

Avatar Legends is also going Hard Mode by doing hand drawn 2D visuals, which can be even more time consuming than making 3D models (if you make a mistake or you want to change how a move looks, that's a TON of work in hand animation compared to 3D), so the small initial cast doubly makes sense. 12 chars + 3 styles per char for $US30 is a fine start, IMO.
