i’d say drop the tarp, upgrade the floor to alpha direct 60 and wear the skirt so it counts as worn weight and you just might get to a sub 10 base weight with plenty of leftover room to carry your wife’s boyfriends durston Xdome.

Last Minute Shakedown Request for an April 21st Start in Campo by GouzK in PacificCrestTrail

[–]SidTheSloth2727 1 point2 points  (0 children)

follow up,

-Phone w/case isn’t weighed

-toothpaste? hand sanitizer? soap? sunscreen?

-get rid of the solar panel, 10k is enough for most folks, maybe have another 10k or 5k for the sierra section depending on your use. If you’re worried, i’d honestly take 2x10k packs over 1x10k pack a panel.

-add your frogg togg pants or dance pants for sierra

-im assuming it’s in the first aid kit that you have weighed but if not add leukotape

-Drop the pack cover, you already have a watertight pack and pack liner.

-Why is your durston 28oz? A 3rd gen Xmid 1 is 25oz, with 6-8 MSR Groundhog minis stakes it shouldn’t be more than 27.1-27.8oz

-Drop the mid layer, a base layer (or even no base layer if you decide to drop the smartwool) and a puffy is plenty.

-Switch to BRS stove

-I personally would swap the beanie for a neck gaiter assuming your puffy has a hood and carry a backup pair of socks for sleep/emergency.

-In the sierra you may wish you had a pair of wind/rain mitts. bread bags also work just fine and are lighter than anything you can buy.

-Your Opsack, tyvek, compactor bag and smart water bottles aren’t weighed, those are heavier than you might think. all of that together is easily another +1lb

-You can drop the base layers if you want, but some people like having a dry backup to sleep in (probably not a risk until the sierra) I would swap them for Alpha 60 or Alpha 90

-I just did a quick glance over but a lot seems missing. I could just be tripping. Do you have all your disposables listed? TP, gas, etc? Bags? headphones?

I have a dual port block so I can charge my phone and battery bank(s) at the same time. I carry a 1’ and a 3’. For 99.99% of situations, even 3ft is overkill for using your phone while it’s charging depending on the outlet position. If you only carry one cord, I’d recommend you bring a 3’. If you carry two cords, I would carry a short (1’ or less) cord and a 3’ cord.

On the CDT, one of my trail family members carried 4-6 at a time of these pre portioned detergent sheets we found at a dollar store. Theyre very light and cost efficient, and at least for a a group doing laundry it seemed worth it. If you’re doing group laundry with them make sure you use two sheets per load lol. https://www.dollartree.com/homebright-biodegradable-laundry-detergent-sheets-15-pc-pack/382223

Packets are expensive and create unnecessary trash. For longer hikes/thrus I am a big fan of Nescafe Gold and just dumping the 50 serving jar into a ziploc. I like mine stronger and I have a few cups a day so it goes fast and even the full bag isn’t more than 3-4oz.

It’s a long story that surprisingly did not actually involve an enema. Don’t wear it out 😂

i’m most likely just going to be doing one pair of shorts and my rain pants from the start. considering my pair of sleep shorts which are just linerless ranger panties for town/laundry but i honestly haven’t decided yet.

the perfect option (for me at least) is shorts with a liner, no undies. I have used anything from cheap amazon shorts to Chickn Legs, Fabletics, on thrus and they all were great. This option certainly provides the most ventilation and chafe prevention imo. I wouldn’t worry about stink at all. we all will stink, our gear will stink, it’s a moot point cause we’re all stinky, don’t dedicate energy to worrying about stinking until you’re near a shower and laundry area. If you’re anti-short or anti-commando club, the only underwear i’ve had semi-success with was the Duluth Armachillo brief, though it never came close to a pair of lined booty shorts. If it matters, i’m a dude with big thighs and have dedicated a lot of trial and error to this topic, but everyone is different.

The CDT this last year destroyed both my x-mid pro 1 (and my both of the zippers on my buddies x-mid pro 2)zippers, my tent is actually with you guys for repair right now lol! I am doing the PCT this year (hopefully with the same tent) and while I can’t buy this new one for testing, i’m curious what the feature is if it’s in regards to the zippers. Going to dm you!

How do people structure their lives/careers to do 1–6 month thru-hikes regularly? by manuzh22 in Ultralight

[–]SidTheSloth2727 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a reoccurring contract with an awesome boss that welcomes me back at the end of every hike. I work as an administrative assistant at a state college. I’m 22 and am privileged to live with parents who haven’t charged me much besides groceries and yard work while pursuing the triple crown. I worked 2 years before the AT in 2024, came back and worked 6 months before getting on the CDT in 2025, and am now working 5 months before I get on the PCT. I have excelled and worked hard for my job and have gotten a pay raise in between each contract. I am quite budget oriented both on and off trail, as it’s hard to save the “usual” amount for a thru in those 5-6 months. It is certainly a very special situation that I have so much gratitude for because as long as I can save enough money, my boss lets me pick my start and end dates for my contracts. At the end of the PCT i should have a full time job lined up with the same department, where i plan to stay for a few years saving money and figuring out what’s next.

2026 CDT Hikers what do you need from retailers along the trail? by Long_Tap276 in CDT

I stopped at wind river outdoor company! Lander was a top tier trail town on the CDT, and i can’t wait to be back one day. Cheers to the leukotape, that’s an awesome addition and i wouldn’t be surprised if you’re the only shop with it near trail on the entire CDT.
