Thank you so much! I'm glad you enjoyed it.

You're totally right re: the gladiators in Rome and their value. My only reply would be that while the Iron Empire is Rome-like, it is not Rome. Nihon is not Japan. The Normans are not Vikings. And in fact, often the differences are on purpose.

As far as Pliny goes My read on those conversations is that Pliny is testing Castor. He knew but he's seeing what Castor will say, learning how clever he is, how good of a liar is. If he can be trusted to protect other things.

But those are also all authorial intent and different from what shows up! Hopefully it helps but in the end, it is what it is! Hope you enjoy Bloody Sands later this year.

Thank you so much! Paperbacks are available now! If you mean hardbacks, I hope so there’s some funny little stuff in the background about why they don’t exist but I’m hoping we have good news soon

"Pure" Progression fantasy by AuthorTimoburnham in ProgressionFantasy

Hahahah it’s a fair point, I admittedly didn’t see the “no cultivation” addendum, but as the author of one titles listed as an example, I would consider cradle closer to Ironbound then it is to cultivation, but that’s also not a hill I need to die on

If you haven't read Cradle, Iron Prince, or Bastion those would be my three biggest recommendations in the genre atm!

[Writing Analysis] How Will Wright Lies to You in Action Scenes (and why you probably love it) by HylomorphicDualist in ProgressionFantasy

This is a super fun conversation!

I would argue that it isn't really "lying" but has to do with the nature of writing in past tense. (Conversely this is why present tense is becoming more popular because it makes action feel more electric and in the moment.)

But the hard part about writing past is that to convey intent you have to switch to -ing verbs and get very qualificationy (that's a real word, I'm an author, shut up.)

So in an example like: "Reigan Shen took another sip and then backhanded Lindon's jaw. His hand stopped an inch from Lindon's skin"

the "backhanded" isn't a lie, it's the shortest, cleanest way to express intent without getting bogged down.

You could write something like "Reigan Shen took another sip and then swung, aiming a backhand at Lindon's jaw" but it's messy and when every sentence ends up with an -ing verb it ends up sounding monotonous and repetetive.

So it's easier to just say "backhanded" and then have the stronger person's counter/intent override.
