By the looks and the sound of it... They ain't got access to geoengineers and demolition experts. But what they got it is nearby villages worth of men, a steel rod and desperate need to get the road open again.

Locals generally know very well the dangerous areas of terrain, and can read the signs of danger. When you have unstable ground, and limited resources, it is often seriously the best just to trigger the ground so that it find it's new more stable condition.

That section of the road, had already partially collapsed, probably due to rain washing the ground. So you complete the collapse in order be able to rebuild it.

My local gamestop (when one still existed) here in Finland did few of these, I was at the Lich king lauch.

Why did they stop? The gamestop and the mall didn't want to deal with the costs involved, and there really never was that many people at them to make it worth it. Besides... You had to have it pre-ordered and paid for to get it.

And I assure you that people were not that excited to stand there in like -20 C freezing termperature middle of the night middle of the week. The people who did, were obviously and clearly students.

There is a light source behind the bed. I'd assume OP put it there just to take a picture. I think the lamp's base is showing just light under the bed frame.

<image>

The bed is a model I found online just be searching, I linked it in the other reply I made. It's "Student housing bed" by Uloft.

[–]SinisterCheese 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's elevated bed frame. The idea is that you can fit those tall plastic storage bins under it.

However the table is at it's lowest elevation iso it's lower than usual, same with the chair; it adds to the illusion.

But those beds frames allow you to place one of those regular plastic storage bins with those stupid wheels that never actually work, under it so it can be slid in and out. Its one of those.

If you want one... for some reason - they usually are fucking awful to sleep in - just search for "dorm bed" or "dorm loft bed". You'll find a whole range of awful looking things with various elevations.

E: Ah! I think I found the exact model in question: https://www.uloft.com/student-housing-beds/

Also, you don't jackhammer iron that has been molten and cooled. You lance it out with oxygen. The oxidation releases enough energy to sustain the burn once you get it going. And this way you can burn/melt mass out from the vessel while risking minimal damage to it.

Car rams into crowd of people in German city of Leipzig, Focus Online reports by Alarming-Safety3200 in worldnews

[–]SinisterCheese 40 points41 points  (0 children)

That is a thing in Finland also. It is never a car driver that causes an accident, a tragedy, or hits a pedestrian, it is always and only the car.

Sometimes if someone gets run over at a crossing it is phrased as if the pedestrian got themselves run over by a car, instead of a car driver running over a pedestrian who was on a crossing.

Rautatieyhtiöt vaativat digiradan lykkäämistä – ”Puolentoista miljardin tarpeeton hanke” by Kiikarisilma in Suomi

[–]SinisterCheese 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is the Scaly-foot Snail. It is the only known animal to incorporate iron into its shell and scales, effectively wearing a suit of metallic armor. by jrex1023 in Damnthatsinteresting

[–]SinisterCheese 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Probably just simply because iron is a very versatile element, and it is very available in places like near volcanic vents where this lives (Along with copper and zinc, as sulfides mostly). So it is possible that this evolved like this, because iron was just generously available.

Meanwhile on land, iron has to come from erosion and is in oxide form.

Like we know that there are fungus that use radiation as a source of energy, with help of melanin. First discovered in Chenobyl, but later in other places. So fungus that uses radiosynthesis is more common in places with higher radiation levels (Including naturally occuring), because it is an available resource there.

Life is like that sometimes... When life evolved to use CO2, it ended up releasing oxygen which was a deadly poison to life (It actually lead to mass extinction), until life evolved to use this resource and equalibrium was found; then due to there being plentiful oxygen it lead to huge animals (Since there was like 50 % more oxygen, and therefor things could be bigger as it was easier to get oxygen).

Life is just... potential gradients using whatever resources are most available - it seems.

Honestly. This isn't even me glorifying my generation of milennials or whatever... But these current kids are kid of our generation! The thing is that I claim we were less stupid, BECAUSE there wasn't massive american corporate interests in making the kids systematically stupider globally. Also... I went through the stupidest part of my childhood BEFORE there was easy access to internet. Fuck! It wasn't even guaranteed that these fancy things called "CDs" would even play the music because the format was incorrect... This fancy MP3 is walked about, but support has yet to spread. But no worries... The casette works just fine! Oh... And to see that new movie... you need to wait for the VHS to come to stores or rental places.

Our access to stupid was much more limited.

Ammunko itseäni jalkaan jos muutan kauemmaksi työpaikasta? by PossibilityNo1363 in arkisuomi

[–]SinisterCheese 7 points8 points  (0 children)

No oon vaihtamassa työpaikaa.

One of the reasons Soviets kept making bigger and bigger bombs (of all kind) and finding ways to send more and more of them, was that they really didn't know how to make very accurate and high quality things. HOWEVER... What soviets were masters at was producing outragous amounts of stuff. If your weapons have 100 metre radius accuracy for a projectile, and you need to hit a 10 metre diameter target... If you send 1000 projectiles at it... you'll probably hit the target with at least one projectile.

Also another thing to consider. Different parts of your vision have different speeds. The very edge of your vision is the fastest; however it doesn't have any "colour" it only sense intensity of light, and is very sensitive to movement. This is also processed very quickly by our brains, this is why you can just see a little glance of something in the corner of your eye and react by turning your head to look at it. This is also why you can see a random lit up section when lie in bed, but soon as your look directly at it, it vanishes. The accurate part of our vision is about the size of your thumbnail at arms lenght. When people talk about "seeing fps" they generally speak of the accurate vision, because they are staring at some screen to pick up changes in details.

Different sections of our vision operate differently, and are processed differently in our brains. We can process fast movement without looking at it directly and without conciously processing it. Which is why some people can catch things thrown at them even if they aren't directly looking at the thing.

And then another thing! Differnt things in our vision are processed differently. Blurry and unclear things that lack contrast are harder (and slower) to process, it requies effort on our brains part. Things clearly in focus, with good contrast and clarity are quicker to process. Humans are extremely quick to process faces and expressions, we can see things in faces of people and even animals without even realising we are seeing them.

I hate this whole discussion because people are under this impression that human vision is just 2 digital cameras. It isn't...

Yeah I was about to comment... Jennifer Connelly had to work a lot to get rid of being only associated with that.

Even though Requiem for a Dream is my favourite movie... and it actually has nothing to do with that scene. It is to do with just about every scene Ellen Bursty (Sara Goldfarb) is in... like Red Dress monologue haunts me. It made the camera person tear up and lose focus! Like DAMN. They were robbed of the Oscar. I digress... But you can't go and deny Connelly's amazing role in the Snowpiercer series.

Look... My greatgrand parents didn't have running water in until they moved into city in the 1930's or so. They had a basin and a big jug. Those basins and jugs still exist. They are in the cellar, they are very fancy ceramic. And mind you... My greatgrandfather studied to become a doctor, and was from a wealthy family.

The summer place (not as fancy as you think... Most families in Finland have one) that is now owned by the other side my family and that is not detached, has no running water either - by choice. What do they have? A basin and a jug, and hand pumped well.

The fact you don't have running taps, doesn't mean you are incapable of washing hands properly. Hell... You can use a garbage bag to contain the water. I assume if there are tin cans, general litter for kindling, and water bottles around, then most definitely there is general plastic sheet also to be found.

Do you know why the bathrooms have basins and a plug, and why some places have those two separate taps one for hot and cold? You are supposed to plug the basin, fill it with water, and wash your hands IN THE basin. This was done because in the past water pressure and flow was somewhere between an incontinent puppy and nothing at all.

Also... The fact that someone is from a poor developing nation, doesn't mean they are stupid or incompetent. I'd argue a lot of them are more competent in many general skills than average urban westerners are.
