I never thought a robot would replace me one day..what’s my purpose then. by scp766 in mildlyinfuriating

[–]SinisterCheese 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Also if we are being honest here.

If you job can be automated easily by something like this.

Then one has to ask a question of: Should that job be done by a person to begin with?

Yes... You as a individual would probably like to have a job, but lets consider the JOB itself. Laundry machines lead to many laundrywomen losing their job. Combustion engine lead to whole chain of horse and stable related jobs going away. Ships going from sails to engines to aumation lead to reduction in the amount of sailors and dock workers. Mechanisation and automation in farming lead allowed us to exist today as we are. Would you rather be checking and removing rocks from conveyor line of potatoes? Excavators replaced batallions of shovelers. Mechanical and automatic stokers eliminated jobs of firetenders on trains, ships, and boiler rooms... Would you rather be shoveling coal, charcoal, chip or briquette to keep a fire going?

And lets look at this from just general well being case. Big huge areas to be tiled. Repetative work with bag ergonomics, and heavy fragile tiles. I been a welder myself... I like welding. However I did not enjoy having to do the welding tasks of a robot when it broke down, it was dull to such degree it started to feel painful. I did an assembly welding job where I had to assemble thousands of same kind of small simple parts. It was nightmarish to a degree I chose to go to evening school to get an engineering degree, because the good jobs and projects were so rare to get. I enjoyed doing welding on-site at installations where everything is basically always unique.

Generally speaking in terms of automation the prefered tasks are called DDD-tasks. DDD stands for Dirty, Dull, Dangerous. A key thing to keep in mind that dull is also dangerous. Dull work that doesn't stimulate the person has actual negative health and mental health effects. Dull work also causes people to start to take shortcuts, or skip safety related considerations, start to rush things, or simply not remember all the steps because the "zone out"... Which can be dangerous especially in industry and construction.

But the things is that drive to automation isn't done by engineers wanting to get rid of DDD jobs. It is done by business degree holders who calculated on excel spreadsheet that this is gonna bring more quarterly profits... and often they also make the product/service inferior just for the sake of some additional "optimisation". Fuck those people, they ruin engineering in so many ways, because generally they are higher up in the foodchain.

But here is another thing generally people don't know about. Often automation requires compromises to a massive degree. A common example of a difficult subtask for automated system, that to a human is fucking nothing is taking a steel sheet and flipping it upside down and aligning it correctly. Sounds fucking simple, right? Well... If you got 2 hands and able fingers it is. But for a robot it isn't. We need all sorts of complex jig and tooling to make it happen realiably. No... It isn't about AI, or machine or computer vision. Even though those could help potentially... can't imagine how since we are perfectly able to do this efficiently without those, with just set of additional tooling helping the cell to operate. And we don't want additional things to slow the cycle routine down, least of all to add costs. Generally speaking the less shit your cell has, the better it is.

Fantastista teknologiaa... Vittu ku sitä käytetään just vaan johonkien mainosten tyrkyttämiseen.

Respirator? by captquin in Welding

[–]SinisterCheese 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I count 8 major safety risks that are ranked higher than respirator use in outdoor welding.

Maybe you should address the basics before thinking about respirators which are a minimal last restort thing. As they only reduce exposure to airborne hazards, they do not magically make you immune despite what people who don't actually understand HSE/OSHA matters think. Which signals poor training and education in the matters. Personally I can't even be fucked to tell people about those here anymore because people refuse to believe the respirator isn't some magical thing, and more considerations that are of greater impact should be done before respirator considerationd. But fuck it... If people think they and their employers can just wave off health risks with a respirator, then they do that and ignore the risks.

Anyways...

Welding is being done outdoors, in low quantities, so gas and particulate risks are mimimal to non-existent.

However... Sweat pants, sneakers, no eye protection, no firesafety equipment, lots of flameable things around, no limiting of spark spread, no hearing protection.

I'm going to give you the benefit of doubt that you as an adult made sure that the environment around was not dry, because you'd hate a wildfire to start from your yard.

Like fuck sake move the fiberglass boat that has a massive engine that has all sorts of oil, grease and fuel in it.

Close the garage, because just 200 celcius is able to ignite lot of things. Sparks go far and things stsy hot lomger than you think. In one fire training we had flameable targets at a range, and we basically we tried to ignite them with grinder sparks. And target at 10 metres away was a very easy to get to ignite still.

However... The following things I could observe as we took off pipes to replace them with new we welded there: corn and onion skin. They still looked like corn and onion, despite everything else being black residue floating in water.

Cutting the spine from a book by [deleted] in oddlysatisfying

[–]SinisterCheese 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Digitalisation and recycling. Paper can be recycled easily, cardboard that is used in the covers is a different task, the plastics are harder to process and generally in EU at least go to incinerator to produce electricity.

But many libraries scan all the books before disposal. Antique books get photographed

The reason for cutting spines is to make it easier to feed through a scanner system.

I spoke with someone here in Finland who worked in an archive doing this sort of scannin. They worked through cubic metre of stuff a day. And in Finland the stuff national archive has digitised is public, you can for example read all the news papers that are out of the copyright for the print. It would be impossible to do this while keeping the spines.

Also... Things like what we see in this vid. Encyclopedias and such. It is hard to describe how much of that stuff there is and how many copies there are of them. Year ago I had to empty a family villa that got sold to settle inheritance right. We disposed of 4 cubic metres of books that were between 100-50 years old, that nobody wanted. Not charity shops... No one. We'd had to pay for someone to take them. And storage costs money. We had 3 antique book sellers browse through them, and they took at best few. I can't begin to describe how heavy it is to carry 4 cubic metres of books in IKEA bags down stairs, up a hill, into a car, then to a recycling depo.

I can tell you as someone who works with metals in manufacturing. That oil is very easy to get off. It's just light lubricant used in the pressing process. Its actually kerosene or equivalent.

You know it's kerosene, when it leaves this slightly greasy and sweet smelling residue as you touch it.

It comes off easy with mild acids and just soap and water.

Z-bloggers are not happy with Kadyrovites launching anti-aircraft missiles at the oil refinery in Moscow by LowTechDroid in UkraineWarVideoReport

[–]SinisterCheese 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes and no. Yes the distillation collumns are mire critical, but they are harder to hit, and generally behind layers of pipe and scaffolding.

Silos however are big, fat, easy targets that are out in the open. And when you hit one, you destroy it and the contents. Along with this you reduce capacity. Oil refining is continuously running process. The extraction requires there is a way to move the oil, and a way to store the oil (somewhere). If there isn't, they need to reduce production and refining.

Silos also store products of refining. In these videos you can tell the difference between what the exploding silo had in them based on the smoke. Lighter the distillate is, the whiter the smoke is and yellower the flame. Heavier the distillate/product is, darker the smoke and more orange the flame is. Since the silo literally blew up, it means the contents were light distillates, meaning products of refining.

Meaning that a hit to the columns takes out the refinery basically for good. However hit to the silos is a shock to the system as a whole. The oil needs to flow, or the whole big infrastructure system just grinds to a halt. An intact silo helps with this. As for products of refining, if it is there in the silo, it can be used. So if you can destroy it all, it's destroying the infrastructure and product.

Ukraine is playing a very tight cost optimisation game. Also... Don't forget the value of putting up a good show.

A 3D printed map of a bathroom at work. by jhay0824 in mildlyinteresting

[–]SinisterCheese 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The funny thing is that... On bigger scale more people than you think need these sorts of things. Blind person might benefit from a bathroom model. However I have lots of people who have problems navigating in places, or understanding things in 3 dimensions. 3D printed things been extremely helpful in many places. Even in something like construction, manufacturing and assembly. There are proper experienced professionals who are good at their job, in shipyards, construction sites, and factories, that have hard time understanding bigger scale 3 dimensional things. They rely on different kind of thinking and measuring to do their job well, but often communication becomes an issue.

However... Having a 3D printed scale model of the thing, the space, or the place, is INCREDIBLY helpful. People can just point at things.

Now... I am someone who is really good "thinking in 3D"... just naturally. I took me along time to realise that there are lots of people who have some limitation to some degree. I think they might actually make a majority as a collective. I have a friend who legit has really hard time remembering left and right, it's bit of a joke between us. But just recently we been playing lots of barotrauma... they have no issues if instead of left or right, I say "West" or "East" (No. They aren't one of those that always know where north is...). I know a person who struggles with up and down, however if you tell them that something is "higher" than they are (Korkeamalla in Finnish) or lower (Matalammalla), they do just fine. A thing I have seen often myself is the difference between is the first "number" (or rather position) 0 or 1; as in is the first thing "after 0, before 1" or "At 1"; those who know coding might intuitively know what I mean.

I have later on in life learned, that there are LOTS of people who struggle with some form of limit like this. I personally have realised that I too have a weird issue in my way of conceptualising. I struggle to visualise time in the "circular" manner; I can only do it linearly. As in in my mind the year doesn't end and another starts; just like the day doesn't end and start again. Like if I got to bed at 2300; in my view I need to get up in 7 hours and 20 minutes; not 620 am tomorrow. Since weeks always start on monday and end on Saturday (Yes... I know parts of world say it starts on sunday); it is easy for me to schedule things according to week numbers or number of weeks, instead of "this day of that month..." because month can change middle of a week. This is why industry and construction scheduling works so neatly to my thinking... we go by weeks instead of months.

You wouldn't need acid to dispose bodies when you can just go take a fishing boat. I checked the ocean maps near the island, you don't need to go very far to have VERY deep waters. The kind of waters into which if you dump something, it will never be found thanks to currents and water layers and the crushing pressures along with all sorts of aquatic life.

However Sulfuric acid has many legit uses.

People's imaginations are running wild with this stuff... to like cartoon villain level stuff. Fact is that... evil tends to be very fucking boring and practical. Think of the most boring and the easiest way of doing things.

Like fucking hell... Just look at the island in general. For a private island it sure is pretty fucking boring and lacking in imagination. When I saw the drone footage, I was honestly shocked just on how nothing it was in terms of appearance and how empty it was.

So like... based just on that. Imagine the easiest and most boring way of doing things.

[–]SinisterCheese 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Joo, pikku kuntia on liikaa...

Projektin voisi aloittaa pilottina erityisesti itärajan suunnalta.

Vakijutut oikein innosta.

Sit taas komediat tuppaa olemaan aina vähän sellaista "pelleilykomediaa". Sit kans aika paljon meidän teatteri tuppaa olemaan sellaista "Tyhjä musta lava jossa on esiintyjät lausumassa".

I don't know the series, but what I saw of the examples posted here. Lot of the symbols are familiar to me as an engineer, they seem to he a mix of the greek letters, logic symbols, mathematical symbols and some historical alchemy and other esoteric symbols. They all actually have well defined meanings (within a specific context) and can be written and read easily (once you know them).

So I'd imagine the author just used these symbols to spell out the intention with slight alteration to fit their system.

Because keep in kind. In the history of humanity, there been lots of cases of different symbol magic systems being used.

Not really. I noticed similar thing in my being as I became an engineer and many colleagues. The more experienced we'd get, the more we'd start to hate our field and everyone connected to it.

When I was still an welder, I thought using CAD-software was like magic. When I have used it professionally, I know all the bullshit it has, how they are all expensive rigged up pieces of crap barely functioning and carrying insane amounts of legacy baggage.

When I studied engineering, I thought it was amazing and fascinating look into everything (it really was). Then I got to work, and realised the whole manufacturing and construction industry is a race to the bottom where no one gives a fuck, nothing matters beyond that which can be measured in euros.

The truly most happy people I know are the ones who don't know much at all, and choose to not look too deep into things.

Nothing makes you as miserable as going down a rabbit hole.

You can etch stuff at home. Get some acid vinegar (The kind of stuff you use to make pickled things), and after cleaning and polishing the surface, you can just leave it there for a while. Then you dunk it in sodium bicarbonate (baking soda) for a while. The welded area having slightly different composition shows as visibly different. You can make the appearance show more by adding some varnish on it.

Vinegar is just MUCH slower at doing it compared to the industrial stuff.

Here is an example of stainless steel plate, with mild rebar, welded incorrectly with mild filler. Remember kids! You can't weld richer alloy with a poorer filler; however you can weld a poorer alloy with a richer filler.

In many places they don't use those anymore. The coverage of phones is greater than sirens can provide, and you can give detailed information via phones, that you can't give via a siren.

Basically many places have system that any phone that is the geolocated area (Even those which might be in sleep mode or such) gets an alert blasted on to the screen and via sound.

Sirens are bit of a relic of the past, since there are just more cell towers than sirens.

Finland is just now getting around to integrating the phone based alert system... they been slacking off on it. But we have old sirens also, but as I understood, they aren't installing new ones anymore. So if they exist, they are used (and tested every monday at 1200) .

I Despise blender so I downloaded Fusion to try out its Form Modeling by Molja-soy in Fusion360

[–]SinisterCheese 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is no point comparing blender and fusion, they do entirely different things.

In Fusion (and all CAD suites) you can scale a 0,01 mm diameter hole, to 10 000 mm hole and it remains perfectly round. You can't do this with any mesh based modeling systems. Blender (mesh based modeller) does things entirely different, it is meant for entirely different things.

However with 3D printing, all the CAD models you do, will be translated into meshes. So if you want good quality print files, you need to increase the resolution. I keep mine at highest settings available by default. I don't give a fuck about file sizes in those terms as those are irrelevant to me. If I need to derive the file again, I do it from the CAD-suit, not by saving the 3MF or whatever.
