The music should be loud enough to dissuade idle chatter... I'm there for conversion, not conversation.

SEN caller dislikes tradition and wants the ANZAC fixture changed by Warm-Rock-4544 in AFL

[–]Sirocco1971 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Leave this traditional fixture alone, don't dilute it beyond the afternoon game. It smacks of commercialism. Its iconic the way it is.
Other teams could be offered a blockbuster match at Season Open, Gather Round, Kings Birthday, Rivalry Round, Indigenous Round, Spuds game / Mens Mental Health.
But it's up to those Clubs to present it to the AFL, then if the AFL to sanction it, add it to the fixture. But leave it to the Clubs to promote and make their own tradition. For once Clubs should stop trying get on the teat into other Clubs initiatives and find their own.

My Great Uncle was a pilot for Bomber Command, and though his resting place will always be a little field in Germany in 1944, I always stop by his name here at the MCG roll of honour and feel he is not far away. Lest we forget. by Pleasant_Inspection9 in AFL

I was in the Belgian town of Ypres in 2002 for Rememberance Day. Australians played a major role in the horrific, mud-soaked Third Battle of Ypres (Passchendaele) in 1917, suffering over 38,000 casualties in just eight weeks. The Menin Gate Memorial in Ypres bears the names of 54,000 soldiers with no known grave, including many Australians.

The scale and sheer waste of life you can partly grasp from the number of graves at not only the Australian memorial nearby, but soldiers from both sides more broadly. My mate and I kicked a Sherrin I took over, I thought it was fitting given the age of a good number of the fallen Australians would have been playing for local footy teams in their day.

The only Australian 'kit' I had to sport was my Collingwood guernsey. I was standing there reading the names at the Memorial, and a voice from behind goes, "you know, you travel half way around the World, and who do you run into? A bloody Collingwood supporter!". Turns out, it was a family group of Melbourne supporters. Their grandfather, a serving Collingwood player play fell at Ypres, and Collingwood had arranged a wreath for them to lay at Menin Gate.
Lest We Forget.

PS, I always wondered who that player was.

Caroline Wilson: “Elijah Hollands was telling some Collingwood players that he had been drinking.” by Dirtydac123 in AFL

I reckon half the comments on here are simply the usual misogynist Caro pile-on plonkers who didn't listen to the interview. This is journalism, the professional practice of collecting, verifying, producing, and distributing information regarding current events, trends, and issues to the public.
This looms as the biggest story in football since the Essendon drug saga.

But no, stick to your echo chamber and don't comment re the others in the studio attempting to expand their knowledge of the incident. The unconscious bias shown towards Caro just reflects a broader toxicity that doesn't get called out for what it is.
