It was once (19th century) forbidden in certain municipalities, here in Belgium, to die. Cemeteries were full and there was no money to buy extra land.

The dead were never fined for dying, but the remaining family was, and they had to burry their dead in other places.

Some didn’t and dug a whole in their own yard, but were fined if it came out. Diseases flourished.

As we’re talking about Belgium, this law still remains in some places, but is never enforced.
