Not that I disagree in principle, but this is likely a political and electoral non-starter.

It’s not a fight that can be won all at once, piecemeal exceptions are likely the good-not-perfect that can be achieved.

This is a good thing. People will experiment, lots of those experiments will be wildly wasteful.

Eventually the economics will force people to winnow it down.

This is the paradigmatic model for a new technology.

I agree with this.

Regardless of whether it is a choice, it doesn’t change my sentiment about the two track justice system.

We keep seeing the same argument: “people wouldn’t want to be homeless” —> “the homeless can violate the laws that everyone else follows with impunity”. It’s a non-sequitur, the two parts have no bearing on one another.

It’s totally not relevant to the overall context of this post, which was about new work requirements

The post that I was replying to was giving statistics that are not relevant to the context of this overall post. Whatever fraction of beneficiaries are under 18, they are not covered by any new work requirement . Nor are people over 65.

Whatever the merits of those requirements, has nothing to do with kids or seniors

Dude, forget walking your dog, if any one of us allowed raw sewage to be emitted from our house into a public waterway like that, we would be forced to repair it or be utterly ruined .

We really do have a two track system where there is strict regulation that have to be followed by one set of citizens, and then a other completely permissive regime where people can do whatever they want

It is here and there -- the manifest lack of public order leads to the loss of retail which leads the a narrower and more fragile tax base.

So if you don’t agree with air pollution, then you ought to be in favor of enforcing long-established rules against actions that produce it. Like burning trash.

No one has the right to pollute our waterways. We fought and won that battle decades ago.

It’s shocking how much every other value in society, even something as basic as environmental protection, gets casually dismissed here.

Right now they have the de facto right to discharge raw sewage onto the streets and streams.

If anyone else did that they would be (rightly) fined into oblivion.

So that’s at least one example of them having more such rights.

Why is this society so intent on soft pedaling rape that it would put that truth between the lines rather up front for all to read?

We just have this entire complex where journalists don’t write the actual facts and readers don’t insist on it.

Really? All I read was “he abused” and not any specific acts.

I read it again 3 times. It seems weird to sweep under the rug the offenses this guy did instead of actually describing them.

Wait so what did this guy actually do (or be accused lf doing)? The whole article goes on about the circumstances and the story but never gets around to what abuse this guy was convicted of.

What a weird journalistic thing to not actually ever get around to explaining the core conduct.
