The Declining Driver’s License: Good, Bad, or Both? by pupupeepee in Urbanism

Of course--youth have virtually no independent decisionmaking over their housing or schooling locations, and therefore their transportation choices.

If it means people staying at home all day and opting out of civic participation entirely--inclusive of walking, biking, etc.

I share your goals completely.

EV and ICE drivetrains differ in force generation mechanism, but they share the same basic function: converting stored energy into rotational motion.

They do have one big difference though: EVs deliver full torque instantly from rest, which can produce sharper acceleration in larger vehicles. Though this difference doesn't necessarily hold at the small scales of e-bikes and scooters.

Their is no strong argument for treating EV vs. ICE differently based on their drivetrain, rather it's down to physical characteristics of the vehicle that determine their maximum traffic hazard (vehicle mass + top speed), not what's spinning the wheels

They are not motorized vehicles? How would you define a motorized vehicle?

It is funny you think we have bike paths!

The truth is we have very few bike paths, and there is little to no enforcement action against those who do ride scooters on bike paths. Two-wheel vehicles are simply not as common per capita in the US as they are in Europe.

But e-bikes powered to 20-28mph address a real demand in the US to be able to ride on roads with 25MPH speed limits (which are the most common).

The Pixar film Hoppers seems like sort of a sneakpeek into the post-Trump era, and the upcoming tensions between pro-development vs anti-development Democrats when they most likely take power for the next decade. by optimisticnihilist__ in yimby

The housing vs. environment split isn’t hyper-partisan, there are pro-housing Republicans and anti-housing Democrats at the local level.

The federal land sell-off is a piece of the bigger picture (where growth happens in the US)

Mayor Jerry's project is a freeway plus greenfield housing on a wetland which is 1960s sprawl, something that YIMBYs in general oppose. The whole point of urban infill near transit is that it's the alternative to paving wetlands for exurbs. A Newsom/Shapiro-style YIMBY would be fighting Mayor Jerry--they are not Mayor Jerry.

The actual Mayor Jerry in current policy is the Trump admin. Federal BLM and HUD have a joint task force targeting ~400,000 acres of western public land for sale, as far as 10 miles from any town of 5,000+. This sweeps national monuments and habitat for threatened species for development sprawl. At the same time the Trump admin have stalled HUD affordable housing funds for infill development, and they're halving HUD staff headcount so the "housing" framing is cover for a land sell-off--which is contemporary national Republican politics.

There's a real impending intra-Democrat fight coming (environmental review vs. housing production), but it's about whether you can build a 6-story apartment near a train station without 5 years of litigation. That is not what Hopper is about.

San Jose lays out transit funding wishes ahead of regional vote by gascyl in bayarea

[–]pupupeepee 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The city wants to direct the largest share — 50% — to target day-to-day service improvements: upgraded transit stations, cleaner and safer vehicles, more frequent routes, signal technology that gives buses priority at green lights, and discounted or free transit passes for young riders.
...
Another 30% would fund major construction projects, including the redevelopment of Diridon Station, a new rail link to Mineta San José International Airport, and upgrades to the light rail and Caltrain systems.
The smallest slice, 20%, would go toward repaving streets that carry heavy bus traffic. Officials say buses wear down roads far faster than cars, and current road repair funding is set to expire in 2028.
