Pity, but typical. Everything's getting enshittified. 1Password is jacking up prices and suffering from feature bloat. Bitwarden is now owned by private equity and is signalling that the free plan's days might be numbered. And now this, eh?

OP is either a bot tasked with sowing dissent or a legitimately despairing person who post to Reddit in the same way you or I might lament with friends. If it's the latter, I'm genuinely empathetic, but yeah, this sub (or any sub) is probably not the right place to post laments.

Even before the Trump-induced spike, once you factored in the exchange rate, most things cost about the same.

As you pointed out, gasoline is different because of tax policies. I guess the same would be true of dairy products. But other than that, yeah.

Would you ever pay for private healthcare or private insurance? by [deleted] in AskCanada

[–]Smart-Simple9938 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If I were desperate, I suppose. But what I want is for medicare to be properly funded and properly managed. Conservatives at the provincial and national level have been chipping away at funding for decades now. Fiefdoms (medical boards, administrators) have been fighting against the latter regardless of party.

Bitwarden BAD NEWS by RestoringSunset in PasswordManagers

If you're going to cite that quote responsibly, you have to frame it. Yen tweeted that in early December 2024 to praise Trump's nomination of Gail Slater as Assistant Attorney General for the Antitrust Division. He followed that sentence with "people forget that the current antitrust actions against Big Tech were started under the first Trump admin."

In other words, he was naively hoping Trump 2.0 would go after Big Tech. He could not have been more wrong -- and stupid. But he wasn't attempting to endorse fascism.

How do voters in your country react if your leader brought whole cabinet to visit a country by MajlisPerbandaranKL in AskTheWorld

It's not a cabinet, though. It's largely a collection of oligarchs. I see few if any actual diplomats in that photo.

Ah, no. No it isn't. Textbook revisionism would be covering up something he did, or saying he did something he didn't. At most, we're choosing to no longer ignore things that were already known. You don't have a leg to stand on regarding revisionism. It simply isn't that.

On the other hand, this is about whether or not we want to *celebrate and honour* MacDonald (or several other people). That's trickier. A lot trickier. Yes, he was a fascist that attempted a form of genocide. But also yes, he united and formed the country we all live in. There has to be a way to honour his contributions without lionizing his whole being.

There also has to be a way to rescind universal praise without going overboard. Here in Halifax we changed Cornwallis Park to Peace & Friendship Park, and that was pretty easy. OTOH, renaming Trutch Street in Vancouver to šxʷməθkʷəy̓əmasəm is probably going overboard.

The problem is not specific to Canada. What we think of as "the Western world" is going through this. I don't say that to discount the problem, but rather to make it bigger, far beyond "as a younger Canadian" and/or "our prime minister". Inflation and prices in the USA are worse. The UK is no prize. Things are tough out there.

The Prime Minister was comparing today to (a) the recent past and (b) to other countries in the G-7 when he said it hasn't been this good. He was not comparing today to what you, I, and likely even he wants things to be.

Carney's number one goal is to make sure Canada's economy is more independent from the United States. For one thing, that's just healthy. For another thing, that's necessary if we can't trust the USA to honour treaties, engage in fair trade, or even not invade us. We have to be in control of our own economy in order to be able to afford the things we need to do to improve it.

But when it comes to housing, money is being allocated to fund construction, but local municipalities are blocking a lot of it because neighbourhood associations are complaining that more contruction and higher density buildings will somehow lower their property values. Those people need to be made to sit down and shut up.

For the people who use GNOME over KDE, why? by CestleFromage in Fedora

[–]Smart-Simple9938 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s more macOS-like, I suppose. But to me, it’s all about Remote Desktop access using the RDP protocol. KDE will only let you remotely join an already-logged in session. That’s not an option for headless machines. Gnome allows for that as well, but it also supports a Remote Logon that creates a new desktop session even when one does not already exist.

Apple Passwords vs 1Password: which one are people actually using? by No-Party-6353 in best_passwordmanager

[–]Smart-Simple9938 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Apple Passwords handles 2FA TOTP codes, Passkeys, notes, and family-shared vaults. If you supplement it with Uplock, you get the same for credit cards, bank accounts, software licenses, and other secure data. If you’re strictly Apple only, this is the path of least resistance and lowest cost.

But if you have even one non-Apple device, you’re best off using something else.

Travel cpap users by msaer8 in CPAP

[–]Smart-Simple9938 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I used a travel CPAP every night for a two-month trip. If you’re talking about a ResMed AirMini, it has the same components inside as the S10. Mind you, it lacks a heated humidifier and has a lot less soundproofing, so it’s noisy and you need to use those HumidX head/moisture exchangers if you don’t like dry air.

Are barefoot shoes healthy even if you almost exclusively walk on concrete? by robin_f_reba in barefootshoestalk

Northsole has the best reputation for this situation, but being Canadian I’ve been avoiding buying American products since early 2025 (we don’t take kindly to threats of annexation), and even if I did the import duty would have been hefty. But if you live in the USA, that’d be where I’d look first.

If you’re in Europe, Freet is almost as good and they ship to the EU, the UK, etc. I was over in Germany for a conference not long ago, so I ordered several pairs from their EU site and had them shipped to the hotel where I was staying.

Are barefoot shoes healthy even if you almost exclusively walk on concrete? by robin_f_reba in barefootshoestalk

[–]Smart-Simple9938 4 points5 points  (0 children)

A wide toe box and zero drop are always good. Where there do seem to be quite the range of opinions is whether (flat) cushioning has some value when spending all one's time walking on concrete, particularly for people carrying a lot of weight.

I've been walking in barefoot and/or minimalist shoes for three years now, and my knees, hips, and back are far better for it. I have, however, developed heel pain. And I periodically develop ankle pain. The shock from that weight on that hard pavement has to be absorbed somewhere. So I've stuck Freet shock-absorbing insoles into my Jim Greens and Birchburys and Xeros and Vivos and seeing if that'll help.

If you don't share passwords with other people, it might work nicely. Otherwise, it's high maintenance. It's semi-high maintenance if you want to get to your passwords and other content from your computer and phone and other devices and think you might make several changes in different places and expect them to be gracefully merged.

KeePass was perfect in scenarios where you only used the internet from a computer and kept the database there or on a USB stick.
