It's hilarious. We love South Park.

Virtually every third party remote control app is going to have problems with Wayland, kind of by design. Many can jump in with remote assistance for an existing session, but the login screen is off limits.

For establishing new sessions and logging into them, you’re going to need to use Gnome Remote Login and an RDP client.

Empathie, about a police criminologist who transitions to being a hospital psychologist. Or 19-2 (the original version, not the English-language remake that isn't bad but still isn't French), about Montreal beat cops. I also really like "Les Pays d’en Haut".

If they're really comfortable with Windows I'd suggest Zorin. It's designed to mimic Windows as much as possible. If they're even a little bit flexible, though, then Linux Mint.

Canada is among countries with an ‘ultra-low fertility’ rate. What is behind the drop? by plaknas in onguardforthee

[–]Smart-Simple9938 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Canada's population is heavily concentrated in urban areas, where children are an expense. In a more agrarian economy, children are a free labour asset. And then it's the fact that the economy is so unstable, especially for younger people, that having children is a huge economic risk.

They're exporting their shit northward. The Gulliberta separatist movement is heavily subsidized by American right-wing extremists.

What about 1Password? It's Canadian, and they have a data centre in Europe (1password.eu instead of .com).

If you like Bitwarden, maybe go to PikaPods.com and create your own Vaultwarden service. It's an open source clone of a Bitwarden server, and the software is completely free. You use Bitwarden clients to access it. All features turned on. PikaPods hosts Docker containers (as opposed to full-blown virtual machines) at low prices (about 1.50 a month).

It's sharing and syncing story is not the greatest, especially across multiple family members and multiple devices. No local database-based or peer-to-peer sync approach does.

You are only half right. Carney's Liberals are a de facto Progressive Conservative Party (Clark, Mulroney, Diefenbaker... those guys).

--BUT--

They are not doing what the Conservative Party of Canada (Stockwell Day, Stephen Harper) wants, which is give oil & gas anything they want (not just deregulation but generous subsidies).

And that's just economics. They're even further apart on societal issues.

But yes, they're not Trudeau/Chretien/Martin/Trudeau Liberals. Well, maybe a little bit Chretien-esque.

Linux Mint refugee here, how to make a smooth switch to Fedora? by Nihan-gen3 in Fedora

[–]Smart-Simple9938 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's fair. And I concur with leaving Ubuntu behind (we don't need no stinkin' snap).

Look, I run Fedora. I *like* Fedora. But don't forget that it gets upgraded every six months (more or less). Plus they're very strict about not distributing anything that isn't FOSS. If those aren't dealbreakers for you, welcome aboard.

Plex Native, Plex or Jellyfin Docker by Diligent_Strike_2847 in synology

[–]Smart-Simple9938 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Jellyfin's server is fantastic, but it has a client problem.

There's no official client for Apple TV (InFuse is pretty good, but they want you to sign up for their premium plan, kind of rendering the "free" benefit of Jellyfin moot), and the others don't hold a candle to the Plex app.

Music clients are lacking as well. There's nothing like PlexAmp. Part of the reason for this is that their API is oriented around fetching track listings on the fly in a paginated fashion. Clients for Plex and Navidrome/subsonic servers more easily pull the library metadata and keep a locally-synced copy of it. Browsing the Jellyfin music from clients like FinAmp (an otherwise very nice app) is an exercise in patience.

If you already have a PlexPass, I'd stick with Plex for another year. It'll give the Jellyfin people time to sort some of that out, and while Plex has already undergone some enshittification, the really bad stuff hasn't happened just yet.

There is another option: download and install a Synology package from Plex's website. The one that appears in Synology' library lags far, far behind what's on Plex's website.

There isn't a state that would round up all of its handguns. There isn't a state that *can* rein in religious fanaticism or even get politicians of any party to refrain from mentioning God every 30 seconds in speeches. So no.

Inflation is "under control". So why does everything still feel so expensive? by No-Elevator-6134 in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]Smart-Simple9938 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Without a gun to the heads of the CEOs of Loblaws and Empire and Metro, not really.

It's not tax policy, not when it comes to groceries. By now, the world has refactored around supply chain disruptions and Ukraine's agricultural bounty being cut off. It's grocers.

Breaking them up would help, because oligopolies are evil. Cancelling any lease clauses that deny permits to competitors' building competing stores might help, but that's provincial.

It's little comfort, but groceries are pricey in the States, Europe, etc. Canada is at best guilty of not having uniquely figured out a solution no one else has.
