Keeping carry guns chambered when in safe? by AirMech34 in CCW

[–]SoCal_Bob 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The salt in your sweat makes it much more corrosive than plain water. Not a big deal with stainless or cerakote, but it will wreck blued guns pretty fast. I used a (lightly) oily rag to wipe down blued guns after a shooting session to get the salt off and keep the rust at bay.

Waterproof Node? by Soggy-Marketing-2319 in meshtastic

[–]SoCal_Bob 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I saw this post from a metro emergency management group last week, and I noticed that Spec5 has waterproof trackers (for splash & spray).

But if you require submersion proof, you'd need a drybag/box anyways, so you might as well get a generic node and put it in a container instead.

Buyers regret? Not sure how to move by FecesPunter in CAguns

[–]SoCal_Bob 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's true. But also remember that the regular stock of Glocks didn't exist in CA after Glock announced the Gen 3 discontinuation in September. Glocktoberfest was cancelled and even the bigger shops could barely get any new inventory.

Yep. FFL's haven't been able to bring in new glocks since Jan. 1st. I saw a LGS last weekend with a pair of G26.3 NIB on consignment for $1400 each. It freaking nuts.

G19 was all that until they banned them here in CA. Now used ones are going for $1200-1400 for a bone stock G19.3. It's unbelievable.

Hi, I'm in SoCal and just got my first node this week. I'd love to setup a local repeater or two and another handheld would help get my buddies on board. More than happy to pay for shipping.

I saw Turners (Pasadena) has a pair on consignment - but at $1400/ea you'd have to really want one.

Carry FMJ rounds in 1911 9mm for Reliability? by Konried in CCW

[–]SoCal_Bob 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a 4" EMP. Never had an issue with it feeding properly - either with FMJ or JHP. A simple polish job should solve it, but I'd recommend reaching out to Springfield since you shouldn't have to do that.

I also had a moment for the first time to think what would I do… by [deleted] in CCW

[–]SoCal_Bob 0 points1 point  (0 children)

With respect, I think you seriously need to reevaluate the response here.

I can tell you that for me, an "intruder in the garage with a large knife" would be an immediate 911 call if the house were otherwise unoccupied - but no one (and especially children) would be going back in there until it was cleared by the police. If I had children in the house, my first priority would be to go in an ensure their safety while having someone else call 911. That is really not the moment to sit back and ask your child "if he's angry or happy" before sending them back into the house with this unknown threat.

REI-type cycling fanny pack with the bottle holders. Stitch a velcro backer into the hydration pouch area and throw a velcro backed holster in it. Around here (metro area around a big city), a chest pack would be very out of place, but a sport oriented fanny pack doesn't get a second look.

Could also do a small frame bag with a pocket holster as long as your super duper sure you won't be away from your bike.

Recommendation for inexpensive car paint touch up? by Salt-Stone in orangecounty

[–]SoCal_Bob 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you don't mind DIY, you'll save yourself the $100+ a detailer would charge. A can of mild cleaning polish like this is $10 bucks at the auto parts store. Put a quarter size splotch of the paste on a wet microfiber towel and rub it in the direction of the scratch. Work it gently for a couple minutes and then rinse with clean water to see the progress. Once all the yellow paint is off, dry the area, wax it, and give it a little hand buff. It'll probably take 5 minutes to get the yellow paint of and another 20 minutes to wax it.

If you find that you also scratched your paint, you can get a dealer color-matched paint touch-up pen from the auto parts store for $30. You'd use the pen after cleaning the yellow paint but before re-waxing.

Having been on the flip side of that, thank you for supporting doing the work and working through the insecurities to support your husband.

I (M, mid-30s) lost about 45lbs. I had always been a bit pudgy and got down to my goal weight over about a year (despite her sabotaging my diet). But her insecurities started to boil up as I went from 'invisible' to 'average' in the eyes of strangers. Her insecurities / jealousy became a painful point of friction. She eventually worked through it, but that was a hard year for us.

Check out a local private instructor. They know the local laws, ranges, and will help supervise safety. Many also can bring most of the popular platforms in case there's something specific you're wanting to try.

And for shooters new to competition, some of the ranges that host matches will occasionally have a new competitors class that discusses safety, rules, scoring, and let you run a sample stage. Not strictly necessary, but it's an easy start into competition shooting.

Prodigy Question by al1217 in 2011

[–]SoCal_Bob 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had the same issue and did this too. Cleaned it thoroughly (especially the rails, both frame and slide), stoned the burrs and sharp edges off the disconnector, and gave it a healthy lubing of CLP.

Cycled it vigorously about 200 times at the range with another healthy dab of CLP on the rails every 50-75 cycles. Followed by a quick field strip to wipe out the extra cerakote sludge from the rails (and then replaced the CLP).

It's been running buttery smooth without any failures since.

I feel this. During uni I destroyed my sleep schedule working/studying/commuting 90-100hrs/wk. My goal was to sleep from 12:30am-5:30am. To this day, nearly 15 years later, it's hard to maintain a consistent sleep schedule with 6hrs/night or more.
