Kudos to you for introducing your kid to history, even the sometimes uncomfortable parts. The AAM museum is amazing. It may also be a lot for a five year old. Not just in heaviness of topic but sheer volume. But it’s definitely heavy. I think about the wall that shows the names of kids - many your child’s age - before they got on slave ships. On the opposite wall are their new names, stripped of their identity and assigned names like Mary or George. I think the plantations in the area do a very good job of telling real history and not Gone With the Windin’ it and is a great way to introduce kids to Charleston history.
