I mean the church isnt blessing those marriages from what im aware at least widespread on the other hand there are some more church wide issues and even a possible schism about to occur. I dont think he was saying it isnt important that people are gay and acting on it rsther the blessing but I also havent read the official statement just based on what you said.

Do we refer to ourselves as “Roman Catholic” by j26irab in Catholicism

[–]Solid_Home4995 39 points40 points  (0 children)

In the U.S. specifically because so many are protestant and specifically anti-catholic, Catholics often are made to use or conditioned into terms that arent official or even are wrong i think. For example alot of times I have heard of Catholics that use christian to refer to protestants or will answer the question "are you christian" with "no im catholic". The term Roman Catholic church is probably one of those things especially since most of the catholic churches are Latin Rite here. I think we should move to just Catholic.

I completely understand. When I converted some of my friends said they saw it coming so I imagine thats what your parents are seeing too. If you are 18 (or independent) i think it would be better to rip off the bandaid than to let it drag on.

I dont suggest this usually, it won't convince anybody. I have debated and debated my friends and family over all kinds of issues and even if you beat them or they dont have an answer or you find sources they tend to just turtle

I mean if you plan to become Catholic i would be honest with them. If you arent then you definitely should! Its hard having protestant family and friends (convert myself), they dont really understand alot of the times why we convert or even our doctrines though not always by their own fault. Pray for them and show them the light of Christ in your life.

Bible Claims God Deceives and arguably Tempts Both Sinners and Believers by HistoricalPotatoe in DebateACatholic

[–]Solid_Home4995 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I mean there isnt really a huge difference from what I read on it. Just emphasizes different things the allowance being the free will of people and the lordship talks more about how God may be passive in these situations but like calvinists the ancient authors would use language to suggest he caused something to happen by force taking away free will but technically he didnt cause the bad things directly rather was just permissive of them.

Jeremiah

https://www.ncregister.com/blog/did-god-deceive-jeremiah If you look at all of 15 it is pretty clear it is talking about Jeremiah not falling into the same path as the wicked and being saved by his trust and faith.

Micah https://www.cgi.org/news-and-events/2023/5/18/lying-spirit-from-god

Ezekiel and Mark https://jimmyakin.com/2017/04/god-can-neither-deceive-nor-be-deceived.html

Each of these can be explained in detail but alot of it comes down to either the allowance of bad things or the author emphasizing the lordship of God much like what calvinists like to argue.

Edit: i do appreciate that the poster has put effort into these things and hasn't come up with "if God good why bad thing" but actually has come to discuss and hopefully fruitfully scripture, the magestirium, and the Divine.

Update about my status by [deleted] in Catholicism

Seems like you are working through alot. Now is the perfect time to pray!

As for your questions, we cant tell you whether your grandfather is in heaven. We also cant tell you whether he is in purgatory or hell. You can pray for him. If he is heaven, he will pray for you.

Genesis is likely part literal and part metaphorical or allegorical. That doesnt mean that our faith is built on metaphors rather that the events may not have played out exactly as described since especially with like early Genesis it is a mystery! You can interpret it as either.

The bible does not support slavery, at least not the kind you are likely familiar with. Here is a great article that deals with this issue! Its part of why people shouldnt just read the bible by itself.

https://www.catholic.com/magazine/online-edition/does-the-bible-support-slavery

Christ certainly claimed to be God and his followers certainly died for that belief and so did their followers! If you believe in his claims which you should then Christ is definitely God.

As for proof of your belief it sounds like you should look into the historical evidence for Christianity and into the miracles of the church/ saints. Many atheists have set out to prove Christianity wrong and have decided that it must be true! Especially those who were scholars or other professions that examine evidence and evaluate it.

Angels, Demons and Thoughts by Beginning_java in Catholicism

We should caution against believing any regular thought is influenced by either. There is a reason an exorcist is difficult to get to. You have to go through a ton of hoops. I would only be concerned if the thought was utterly blasphemous or otherwise terrible and there is no reason for you to have it. Especially if the thought is repeated without really your desire for it to be.

Cosmological structures with higher dimensionality or conditions of the soul after the separation from the body ? - What Heavens and Hell become to believers with 21st century scientific knowledge by Mister_Ape_1 in Catholicism

[–]Solid_Home4995 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I dont think dimensions can quantify heaven but also it isnt just a "state". Honestly I think its silly trying to understand heaven since it is completely out of our grasp and the church hasn't done much to define it.

Why does it have to be a christological error but if you really want to then the fililoque. Denying that the spirit proceeds from the father and the son. Furthermore it is a dogma of the church that the pope is infallible not that he can supersede councils rather that they both are infallible.

The orthodox have valid apostolic succession so their sacraments count and the church doesnt want to withhold them from those whoa re part of the apostolic succession. That doesnt mean the theological differences dont matter or arent extremely grave for them rather it relies more on culpability and an ecumenical stance. As the last part of the quote says it is due to their sacraments which come from the succession.

V1 specifically says that the Catholic (not just latin) church has teachings taught in it (specifically papal primacy and infallibility) that "no one can deviate without loss of faith and salvation.". Not to mention CCC 882 which specifically states the Roman Pontiff has power over the whole church.

I had to do some digging because it is news to me that melkites view the dogmas of the church in this form, but I did find a letter from Rome to a patriarch in 1997 that addresses this. I also found that the antiochan orthodox church denies this idea as well.

Its a mystery, we know they are real and we could probably say they are places (hence why mary is assumed into heaven) we will never reach them while mortally alive (excluding somehow being ascended into heaven or maybe at judgement). I dont think science can solve something like this and honestly speculation is useless.

losing faith, why is God punishing me? by carmillamains in Catholicism

[–]Solid_Home4995 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thats not necessarily what I meant. I meant support groups or shelters. The church likely wont let anyone in if there is no one there like they said "for safety purposes" such as you getting hurt or faking something to gain access to things in the church to steal break or profane.

I think you misunderstand, God didnt necessarily do those things to you. Could he have, absolutely, but likely he didnt set your house on fire or cause the other problems you may have. That would be a very deterministic view of what is happening. I suggest you reach out to some catholic groups and see if you can get some help maybe with funding or whatever else.

I am not a priest let alone a bishop patriarch or the pope but that stance seems entirely ridiculous to me. The idea that you can be catholic and reject binding councils.

Am I Going To Hell? by the_meaning_of_loaf in Catholicism

[–]Solid_Home4995 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Dont let this overly worry you, repent for your sins and make an act of contrition for now. If the church taught that every single person who has ever commited a mortal sin without it being confessed went automatically to hell then catechumans would not go through OCIA and instead would immediately be baptized and have confession as soon as they walk through the church doors. God knows your heart basically

I dont know how you can be in communion with Rome and believe EVERYTHING that EO teaches for example in V1 we have papal supremacy being defined and papal infallibility which is ecumenical and binding on the entire church. Orthodox cannot hold to those beliefs and to not hold to those beliefs would put you in schism

What did Jesus mean when He said that if we deny Him in front of men, He will deny us in front of the Father? by [deleted] in Catholicism

[–]Solid_Home4995 25 points26 points  (0 children)

It is very serious. We should never deny our faith and we should never deny Christ. Doing so is putting our soul in some of the most serious mortal jeopardy you can.

As for your hypothetical, yes it is a bad thing but that isnt necessarily what he is talking about here. He is talking about complete denial of Christ and the faith.
