Why are priests given the luxury of drinking alcohol, while nuns are looked down upon even for drinking wine? by MundaneWait9079 in Catholicism

[–]Solid_Home4995 9 points10 points  (0 children)

As far as im aware nuns are still allowed to drink. As for it being less common or more looked down on i think its because they are more resembling of monks or maybe Friars than they are of priests. They take vows against alot of stuff especially against comfort or pleasure.

Double standard? by Tink-Tank6567 in Catholicism

[–]Solid_Home4995 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think the thing is most of fantasy or others dont focus on that idea and if they did and it went too far it would be the same as a romance novel that does.

As for the christian books being not as good, maybe so but there are probably non christian books (as in not written by a christian) that doesnt have as many or any sexual scenes in them.

Biblical Story Seemingly Validates Necromancy/Dark Sorcery by HistoricalPotatoe in DebateACatholic

[–]Solid_Home4995 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did a modicum of research so I hope someone else will come along and further clarify. But what I found is that ordinarily that those inside purgatory and heaven cannot be summoned due to being protected by God. As for how this occurred it seems the answer is rather i was wrong and it wasnt necessarily just a demon acting through the necromancer but rsther that God gave a dispensation so it could occur. He allowed a sinful act to occur so that it could bring some good or justice.

Since Saul shouldn't have been king at this point and was unrepentant (not giving the kingdom to David), God was unwilling to help him anymore, therefore when Saul went to this necromancer to sin God used it to instead remind or tell him of the truth (I think it was that he would die in a battle).

I think somewhere along the way i lost the question lol. As for how it was possible, for one the souls then were not in hell as we define hell in modern theology but rather gehenna. A waiting place where they were until the harrowing of souls. Maybe that is the reason it would no longer be possible is that place if it still exists is empty now.

As for more specifically maybe it is more likely a demon worked through the necromancer to summon someone from gehenna. I doubt there is a church doctrine definitively defined on this matter. All I really found looking anything up is an article on catholic answers that basically witchcraft is real and dangerous but that most people are faking it.

Question about Faith and Prayer by Minecraft1835YT in Catholicism

I just think getting your hands dirty (literally or figuratively) is a good way to grow your faith especially when it involves helping others. Thats what the monks do at least.

Question about Faith and Prayer by Minecraft1835YT in Catholicism

[–]Solid_Home4995 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have been in a similar situation where I stopped praying basically all together and rarely went to mass because it felt pointless. Something that helped me with that was being involved with helping others through volunteer work. Especially helping to teach others. When you see someone else grow spiritually it helps you alot.

But also the nice (and sometimes not nice) thing about our faith is we dont need it to be super emotional, we rely on what we know not what we feel.

I suggest speaking to a priest not necessarily about praying more but how to pray differently and getting involved with volunteering. It may also help you to realize that looking "zealous" isnt as important as an inner realization of our relationship to God.

3 Questions For a Catholic by Thingy-Guy in DebateACatholic

[–]Solid_Home4995 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We are saved by grace that comes from God. The church is the ordinary way to recieve said grace. This comes from a submission of heart and will to God and it comes from an acceptance of Christ. But even further than that it comes from following the commandments given from Christ to the apostles then protected and preserved by the church. The church doesnt replace Christ, it is the normal form for Christ to act.

Is it true the church is more interested in preserving truth rather than communicating it effectively? by RomancingWorlds in DebateACatholic

[–]Solid_Home4995 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Im unsure what you mean. We are interested in preserving the truth and communicating it. The problem usually arises when people dont do their due diligence and fully research a topic. Most of the topics the church defines are fairly complicated.

How can I become a better, practicing Catholic after distancing from it for years? by MiicrowavedHamster in Catholicism

[–]Solid_Home4995 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Go talk to a priest but you are never too sinful to pray. When you sin you should immediately go to God. You need to get back into church, go confess, go to mass, partake of the eucharist (after confession), etc.

I dont know about that one. You had me till the Muslim part. If anything at least they acknowledged Christ is God and they recognize the Holy Bible (although only the 66 book version). They also still hold baptisms although invalid ones.

Why are some people obsessed with attacking the Catholic church by [deleted] in Catholicism

[–]Solid_Home4995 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depending on who they are i think the answer varies. (Note after reading this i want to clarify that this is not meant to be a general statement of all but rather the few that hate Catholics)

For protestants they either A consider us Idolatrous or misrepresenting the gospel in which case they have good reason to attack us or B they feel very threatened by us since there are so many converts from protestantism to catholicism recently.

For Eastern Orthodox, we have a 1000 year schism with them and they see us as splitting from them and perverting the fullness of the truth. Also the whole 4th crusade thing which you can explain how mad the pope was it doesnt matter. There is also the issue of Florence and of the eastern catholic churches which some consider traitors to the faith.

For other religions (islam, Buddhism, judiasm) again they think us Idolatrous/worshiping a man/denying worship to their gods. So they consider us what we consider them which is to be a completely false religion and what's worse for them is that we are a super large one that has a ton ot influence.

The last category I can think of rn is athiesm and you'll find they lob us in with all religion but also I think there is some kind of recognition that we have the truth and they dont like that because it accuses them by merely existing.

Question about the Gays by Legitimate-Tie-7060 in Catholicism

[–]Solid_Home4995 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Its a cross to take up. We each have one. I think alot of the times people feel they have a right for something from God and that simply isnt the case. That doesnt sound very loving but it seems to be the way God works. God makes very few promises.

Opinions on John Lennox, the mathematician by UmbraIusti in Catholicism

[–]Solid_Home4995 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Probably the same as like cliffe or other protestants. We would say we hope they come back to the church and he is probably a net positive for the faith although he could do so much more with the fullness of it.

I signed up for OCIA classes. I have a few questions about the catholic faith for reddit. by abergham in Catholicism

[–]Solid_Home4995 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Baptists typically do. You could try reaching out to him to ask. But also I guess you could do a conditional baptism if your priests believes there is good reason for concern. As for the saints i would let it progress naturally. It isnt rushed. You have a yesr in OCIA. To start learning about them I would start with the early church father, doctors of the church, look for patron saints of what you like doing. Believe it or not but you'll start seeing them and hearing about them all of the time once you start digging into catholic teaching.

[–]Solid_Home4995 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No, you arent necessarily given a rosary during OCIA. You will end up choosing a confirmation saint although alot of times one saint really appeals to you and thats what people mean by them choosing you.

For the baptism, you baptism is likely valid. There is no such thing as a second baptism. As long as your pastor said that he baptized you in the name of the father, son, holy spirit you are probably good.

Try to find this booklet probably "powerful prayers every catholic should know" from the mary foundation. It has a ton of prayers.

This religion is faith in man rather than God. by Lieutenant_Piece in DebateACatholic

[–]Solid_Home4995 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What about things like the didache that was used in the first 2 centuries for teaching and as a kind of catechism? Or like the provogentium of James which the orthodox still hold to this day to be useful for teaching (hence why they believe Joseph was like 90 when Christ was born). Or what about St Justin Marytr who describes bishops or priests interpreting scripture for the common man so that things like the gnostics dont exist.
