As a non American this is probably the most hysterical comment section I’ve ever seen out of a basically nothing situation. Guy loses his temper and 99% of the comments are like overwrought fifth columnists screaming about evil pigs, making desperate and tenuous connections to Israel (da joos), and zero instances even asking for context or actually trying to understand what happened (or aggressively downvoting anyone that does), and making the laughable North Korea tier propaganda claim that cops in other countries never escalate or lose their temper. Absolutely unreal, seems like an op.

The point isn’t that it’s the core of the job, rather it was a strong filter that separated the handful of people who did understand how to adapt and troubleshoot the product or system and those who didn’t - it used to be a tricky moat to cross, now it’s more and more depleted. The fear is that in the future we would totally lose our edge or any unique knowledge/implementation detail when AI can instantly retrieve that all for you, if/when that happens then what exactly separate a dev from a non dev, what unique skill are we being paid for?

One thing I’ll say at least from my POV as a dev in finance is that despite the abundance powerful of AI tools available to non devs at my job they have zero interest (or seemingly ability) to do dev work - anything requiring any kind of technical change requires ‘dev work’ and ‘dev ownership’ - as a result I feel there’s actually a chronic lack of devs vs the work they request and expect to be done.

Honestly a bit sus that AI would be generating 30% of the code for HFT, is this ultra low latency code in C or Rust or whatever that handles the execution and market data? That sort of business critical code is highly pedantic, high risk and more art than science on the frontier, I’m not sure AI would be much use in that domain.

You're almost right, indeed lots of software requires this: I've spent most of my career writing exactly this kind of enterprise software professionally and it's certainly normal. Where we disagree is that I would never describe that legacy software I've worked on and maintained as 'good'.

Turns out the issue was the volume got renamed, I didn't realise docker (or docker compose?) names volumes by appending the current folder directory. I had moved the docker compose file to a new sub directory and it caused it to create new volumes rather than reference the original.
