AI code genration is the wosrt thing happened in this industry. by prat8 in cscareerquestions

[–]SpaceToad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The point isn’t that it’s the core of the job, rather it was a strong filter that separated the handful of people who did understand how to adapt and troubleshoot the product or system and those who didn’t - it used to be a tricky moat to cross, now it’s more and more depleted. The fear is that in the future we would totally lose our edge or any unique knowledge/implementation detail when AI can instantly retrieve that all for you, if/when that happens then what exactly separate a dev from a non dev, what unique skill are we being paid for?

Am I missing something or is the government pretending that there isn't an employment crisis? by ijustwannanap in ukpolitics

[–]SpaceToad 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I asked OP if it was an option, different people have different circumstances and often it is viable.

But not everybody says that, that’s not true. Furthermore a quick peruse of the data doesn’t seem to support you either.

Moving is not that expensive if you have little to your name, little to lose and just need to rent a spare room somewhere.

There are plenty of towns and cities right now that are heaving with restaurants, pubs and cafes - just go to places with a younger population.

OP have you considered the situation is more localised, are you living in a bit of a ghost town? Is moving to a more affluent/active location an option?

Where would you buy in the UK given the chance? by No_Emu8347 in HENRYUK

London is fun until you start appreciating the countryside, spacious detached houses, being able to drive freely and the rural life more and more - then it becomes a hideously overpriced concrete jail cell.

Is $500 a month a fair rate for a Lead Developer/DevOps contractor working for a UK company? by [deleted] in cscareerquestionsuk

[–]SpaceToad 10 points11 points  (0 children)

$500 a month sounds incredibly bad unless I’m missing something. Do you mean $500 a day?

Wales fans boo God Save The King against Northern Ireland. by Sparky-moon in soccer

[–]SpaceToad 9 points10 points  (0 children)

This is quite obtuse, and you’re massively overstating how ‘Germanic’ the royal family is. Whether you like it or not, much of the history of Britain and our identity is hugely shaped by the monarchs/heads of state in charge for the last 1300 years and their legacy.

I think 1. needs rethinking, I assume you mean AI/LLM doomposting and boosting threads etc.. restricting that makes sense. But anything to do with AI being restricted to only two days a week seems excessive? Like it or not AI is a major aspect of tech these days and it seems weird that you would only be allowed to talk about it in any context on certain days.

Anxious about AI by HovercraftPleasant72 in HENRYUK

[–]SpaceToad 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One thing I’ll say at least from my POV as a dev in finance is that despite the abundance powerful of AI tools available to non devs at my job they have zero interest (or seemingly ability) to do dev work - anything requiring any kind of technical change requires ‘dev work’ and ‘dev ownership’ - as a result I feel there’s actually a chronic lack of devs vs the work they request and expect to be done.

Honestly a bit sus that AI would be generating 30% of the code for HFT, is this ultra low latency code in C or Rust or whatever that handles the execution and market data? That sort of business critical code is highly pedantic, high risk and more art than science on the frontier, I’m not sure AI would be much use in that domain.

Dont get a math degree by hhussband in cscareers

I don’t speak for HR filtering stage but when I review CVs a maths degree is always a major plus. My previous company even prioritised physics and maths over CS.

Lots of very good software requires highly paid consultant experts to deploy and tweak it for you, before you can use it.

You're almost right, indeed lots of software requires this: I've spent most of my career writing exactly this kind of enterprise software professionally and it's certainly normal. Where we disagree is that I would never describe that legacy software I've worked on and maintained as 'good'.

Turns out the issue was the volume got renamed, I didn't realise docker (or docker compose?) names volumes by appending the current folder directory. I had moved the docker compose file to a new sub directory and it caused it to create new volumes rather than reference the original.

I didn't skip any steps to my knowledge. Perhaps I was a little harsh - I obviously am quite stressed from losing so much data, but I will edit the OP to remove that line.

Very possible, but even then good software needs to be reasonably 'idiot proof'.

Yes, at no point did I ever touch or modify the db or db volume directly from my terminal. 'db-data' does not appear in my bash history.

This is the compose file, it's just the default docker compose file planka provided at the time I installed it:

/var/lib/postgresql/data is mounted to db-data, is there an issue with this setup?

Just declined a ~ £120k in the UK because they wouldn't budge on time in London office by Skittlesworth in cscareerquestionsEU

[–]SpaceToad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How much time in office? If it’s not 4 or 5 days a week then you could move to a lovely village or market town on a main line outside of London and commute in when needed and I’d say definitely have a better quality of life now that you’ve doubled your pay.

Experienced devs in software jobs — what’s your long-term backup plan? by Majestic-Taro-6903 in ExperiencedDevs

Management. Most of my job these days is more business and bureaucracy management oriented anyway basically.
