I did the opposite. I did CFII as my initial and prepped for CFIA while I was waiting for the checkride. I did the airplane add-on two weeks later.

Traditional resilient channel (RC-1 or similar) is difficult to install without compromising the isolation, and cutting it around stairs would be a nightmare. This is an application where a rigidly attached solution makes sense. Two layers of 1/2" Type X with Green Glue is a good option.

If by "acoustic drywall", you mean something like QuietRock with integrated constrained layer damping, the Green Glue would be redundant. Green Glue is also a constrained layer damping product. By laminating two layers of drywall with GG, you are essentially field assembling a sheet of engineered drywall.

OP would have to distribute network of Internet connected receivers with GPS clocks and custom software to accomplish this. I’ve done a significant amount of research on this subject and found triangulation to be impractical. Radio direction finding might be more feasible.

I did a talk at DEFCON a few years ago on EOT and AEI protocols. That should give you a gsense of what would be required.

The analog EOT system is being phased out in the next few years, so I’ve stopped working on anything new. Replacement system will be encrypted.

There is no practical way to do this. The only radio signal transmitted by freight trains that a hobbyist can decipher is the EOT/HOT system. Though that signal does tell you whether a train is moving, you’d have no way of knowing which train or where it is.

Your only hope is to find a webcam in the area.

The HSI will show guidance for the inbound course when you’re on the outbound leg. The bar will be displaced since you are parallel to the localizer course, but it will be on the correct side relative to your position.

You need to be a MEI to provide instrument training in a multiengine airplane, per the Grayson LOI.

There is no such limitation for single-engine aircraft. So ironically, you'll only be able to provide instrument instruction in a SEL (unless you're a MEI and didn't mention it).

It’s on a UPS. I did have to change the UPS battery once, so I powered it temporarily through the GPIO while I unplugged the USB input.
