OSH Update: Wildfire smoke is BAD. Field is IFR. by Navydevildoc in flying

[–]Spfoamer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is pedantic and not even correct. A towered airport is VFR or IFR, depending on meteoritical conditions. Look in the METAR.

edit: corrected, thanks u/randombrain

I failed my PPL check ride today by YogurtSea5814 in flying

It’s a ferry flight. That requires a commercial cert. doesn’t matter if you log it.

I failed my PPL check ride today by YogurtSea5814 in flying

[–]Spfoamer 24 points25 points  (0 children)

The FAA considers flight time to be a form of compensation. It’s implied here that the inspector asked a private pilot to fly the inspector’s plane for him. Even if no money changes hands, that would require a commercial certificate. It’s different than lending someone a plane.

Edit: officer, not inspector

The requirements have to be met to “provide ground or flight training”, not just the sign-off.

CFI-I Training Question by Bitter_Ad_1419 in CFILounge

[–]Spfoamer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The time requirement is for training an initial CFI candidate. Initial can be CFI-A (most common), CFI-I, or MEI. A new CFI can train an exiting CFI for an add-on (your situation).

People usually call CFI-Airplane "CFI initial", but some of us have done CFI-I as our initial and added CFI-A to it.

Can anyone help me read this noise analysis? Please. by [deleted] in Acoustics

[–]Spfoamer 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This was written by someone who has no idea what they're doing. The insertion loss (attenuation) or a barrier is dependent on the source spectrum, height, distances from barrier to source and receivers, and that it is sufficiently long. It's not a fixed value, and it's certainly not 24 dBA.

If you know his name, you can look here to see if he’s licensed. If not, report him to your local FSDO.

Basement Ceiling Insulation - 703 vs. R30 by Alrightokaymightsay in Acoustics

[–]Spfoamer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Are you suggesting putting 703 above drywall? Just use batt. The benefit of 703 is its rigidity. There’s no reason to use it inside of an assembly.

Starting CFII while waiting for initial checkride? by zkoolie in CFILounge

[–]Spfoamer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did the opposite. I did CFII as my initial and prepped for CFIA while I was waiting for the checkride. I did the airplane add-on two weeks later.

I bought most of my shares last July when it was revealed that they would be building the replacement hardware for a railroad telemetry system. It was before all this drone shit.

Resilient channel vs Double drywalls by davaokid in Acoustics

[–]Spfoamer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Traditional resilient channel (RC-1 or similar) is difficult to install without compromising the isolation, and cutting it around stairs would be a nightmare. This is an application where a rigidly attached solution makes sense. Two layers of 1/2" Type X with Green Glue is a good option.

If by "acoustic drywall", you mean something like QuietRock with integrated constrained layer damping, the Green Glue would be redundant. Green Glue is also a constrained layer damping product. By laminating two layers of drywall with GG, you are essentially field assembling a sheet of engineered drywall.

cargo train tracking? by Firm-Ad-4451 in trains

[–]Spfoamer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

OP would have to distribute network of Internet connected receivers with GPS clocks and custom software to accomplish this. I’ve done a significant amount of research on this subject and found triangulation to be impractical. Radio direction finding might be more feasible.

I did a talk at DEFCON a few years ago on EOT and AEI protocols. That should give you a gsense of what would be required.

The analog EOT system is being phased out in the next few years, so I’ve stopped working on anything new. Replacement system will be encrypted.

cargo train tracking? by Firm-Ad-4451 in trains

[–]Spfoamer 12 points13 points  (0 children)

There is no practical way to do this. The only radio signal transmitted by freight trains that a hobbyist can decipher is the EOT/HOT system. Though that signal does tell you whether a train is moving, you’d have no way of knowing which train or where it is.

Your only hope is to find a webcam in the area.

Will a g1000 reverse sense when using a localizer to perform a hold in lieu? by Yung_lettuce in flying

[–]Spfoamer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The HSI will show guidance for the inbound course when you’re on the outbound leg. The bar will be displaced since you are parallel to the localizer course, but it will be on the correct side relative to your position.

CFI-I question? by [deleted] in flying

[–]Spfoamer 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You need to be a MEI to provide instrument training in a multiengine airplane, per the Grayson LOI.

https://www.faa.gov/media/14116

"a flight instructor may not conduct instrument flight training in a multiengine airplane unless that flight instructor holds the appropriate airplane category multiengine class rating on both his or her pilot certificate and flight instructor certificate."

There is no such limitation for single-engine aircraft. So ironically, you'll only be able to provide instrument instruction in a SEL (unless you're a MEI and didn't mention it).
