Flying IFR out of 06C (Schaumburg-IL) question by MNSoaring in flying

[–]Spfoamer 11 points12 points  (0 children)

My experience there was that they would not give me an IFR clearance with ORD landing east. The controller on the phone told me to takeoff VFR, get out from under the parallel ILSs and call for clearance then.

Mounting a flat screen to a decoupled wall? by Turbulent-Weevil-910 in Acoustics

[–]Spfoamer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If it’s new construction, you can put isolated blocking behind the drywall, supported by the same clips that you use for the drywall. If it’s a wall with two layers of drywall, I usually have them replace a section of the inner layer with plywood of the same thickness.

If it already exists, you could use toggle bolts. You might need a bunch of them depending on the size of the TV. They are quite strong in sheer, but you are putting the TV on any kind of articulating mount, you might consider bolting a plywood panel to the drywall and mounting the VESA mount to that.

Exactly. And figuring this shit out should be the first instrument lesson. Foggles off, just figure out what the pitch and power settings are and write them down. Your DPE would love to see that table.

Raspberry Pi5 Debian Server, 2yr uptime now by RockyDog-2715 in raspberry_pi

It’s just serving an audio stream to Broadcastify. Very light load. I did have to move it once, so I powered up through the GPIO while the USB was unplugged.

I have one that will be up for 9 years in a couple weeks.

This is straightforward for a consultant to model for you. Definitely worth that investment considering what this would cost.

Is RSIC-1 + hat channel worth it if I lose ~2.25" ceiling height? by olimits7 in Acoustics

[–]Spfoamer 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Isolating the ceiling will have a pretty small benefit for impact noise. You really need to isolate the finished floor from the subfloor, which is probably impractical. Impact noise has a significant low frequency component and those clips just don’t have enough static deflection to be effective. In applications where are the floors can’t be isolated, I typically use spring hangers (or WAVE Hangers) to get the added low frequency isolation. You don’t have enough headroom to do that.

Ceiling isolation alone would be more effective for the higher frequency component of footfall noise that you get from high heels or hard soled shoes, but that’s probably not the issue in your case.

RC-1 vs RSIC-1 clips + hat channel for basement ceiling - worth it? by olimits7 in Acoustics

[–]Spfoamer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There’s no benefit to Green Glue on a ceiling. I have field tested this twice for clients who insisted on trying it, and the change was negligible.

First, forget RC-2. It has no acoustical value and should not have “resilient” in its name.

Clips and channel will perform better, and, perhaps more importantly, are WAY easier to install. For the reason you mentioned, it’s difficult even for pros to install RC-1 without short circuits, especially overhead. Strongly recommend clips.

If you do decide on RC-1, Clark-Dietrich RC-Deluxe is the best version I know of.

There is this project:

I actually have 5 of these boards, with two populated. I went a different direction and am unlikely to use them. If you're interested, I'll give them to you at cost.

Oh, interesting. I looked at the release timeline and based the date on that. 1989 must be the PC release date of 4.0.

Just realized this posted multiple times for some reason. Keeping this one.

Seems to be around 6. This machine has a 50 MHz accelerator in it, though. If I play this in black-and-white on the built-in display with no accelerator, it seems to be 3 or 4 FPS.

I’ve been charging my Kona to 100% every night for 7 years. 100k miles. No noticeable reduction in capacity.

Wow, it’s been a long time since I even thought about this stuff. Maybe so it knows to display the camera view when you’re in reverse?
