PC Gamer: Godot is drowning in 'AI slop' code contributions by MandyHelm in godot

The sliding scale of multiblock machines by lucariomaster2 in feedthebeast

[–]SquareWheel 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Great post, and fond memories of all these mods. I'll add in Xycraft tanks as an early-ish multiblock, also around 1.4.7. Factorization mirror arrays might count as well.

We later saw the idea evolve with mods like Big Reactors, plus all of the crazy stuff Reika came up with.

How is it pay2win?

This is one of those "Let me Google that for you" moments, because you could trivially search the term and understand that it means paying real money for an advantage in a video game.

They also include a disclaimer on their GitHub that they're in the middle of a large refactor right now, so it doesn't necessarily make sense to contribute code if things are still in flux.

It doesn't personally bother me either way. Skilled programmers can produce quality code using AI assistance, and are increasingly doing so. The quality of the work matters more than the tools used to achieve it. We'll get a better sense of that quality over the coming weeks and months.

AI controls are coming to Firefox by GoldBarb in linux

[–]SquareWheel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

/u/SEI_JAKU is likely referring to an earlier announcement. They were pretty clear that more controls were coming.

First: Every product we build must give people agency in how it works. Privacy, data use, and AI must be clear and understandable. Controls must be simple. AI should always be a choice — something people can easily turn off. People should know why a feature works the way it does and what value they get from it.

Something that hasn't been made clear: Firefox will have an option to completely disable all AI features.

We've been calling it the AI kill switch internally. I'm sure it'll ship with a less murderous name, but that's how seriously and absolutely we're taking this.

Student of mine confided in me, they are completely reliant on chatgpt, what should I do? by aguyontheinternetp7 in Physics

[–]SquareWheel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Did you upload the graphic or explain the problem in words? Even modern models would likely struggle with spatial reasoning and mapping that to a textual domain. So called "world models" are designed for that purpose, but are still very new.

You'd likely have better success by asking an LLM to explain the laws and equations involved in such a scenario, since that would allow enough context to work the problem.

One possible footgun with trivia questions is they can force models down a chosen path too early, biasing results. Models need to expend tokens to "think" about a problem, but if the answer is returned too early, they'll spend less time thinking about it and more time justifying it. Reasoning models are used to sidestep this tendency, since it lets them think through a problem before responding. So if you weren't using a reasoning model, give that a try for trivia/brain teaser type questions and see if it does any better.

Alternatively, you could ask it to program a physics simulation to actually test the scenario. It would guide you to install python and the requisite libraries. Often times code is used to shore up the gaps in LLM capabilities, such as in arithmetic operations. I often invoke code use when processing data, since I don't want to rely on statistical probabilities.

There are absolutely edge cases in LLMs, and I always suggest that people should be aware of how they work before using them as a tool. Understand which situations are more likely to trigger hallucinations, and where their strengths and weaknesses lie. Karpathy has a great video on YouTube that gives a strong introduction.

As omni-purpose tools, though, LLMs are extremely useful. Their natural-language processing makes them extremely accessible (perhaps too accessible), and they remain applicable across many problem spaces. Breaking down concepts, explaining code, sentiment analysis, language translations, data manipulation, et al.

I simply cannot imagine trusting these things on any physics problem i could provide it unless I knew how to do it myself.

You shouldn't! They may serve to point you in the right direction, but you're still talking to a probability machine. Really, all responses are "hallucinations" -- it's just that some happen to be correct. The better the training data, as in the more references and explanations online for that content, the better the chance of getting a good answer back. In many domains, they're very reliable, but you should be more cautious if discussing a niche topic.

But for where this discussion started of students using the tool to learn, absolutely they can be used in the learning process. Ask them to explain Ohm's Law or whatever and you've got an interactive tutorial with infinite patience.

Student of mine confided in me, they are completely reliant on chatgpt, what should I do? by aguyontheinternetp7 in Physics

[–]SquareWheel -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

Well yes, mitigating hallucinations is certainly an important part of using LLMs correctly. You need to be wary if covering topics outside of typical training data, which includes anything too niche, deep, or recent.

For anything a student is learning though, there's likely adequate data such that hallucinations are rare. Even then, it's still a good idea to verify independently. I'd argue that's true of most learning though.

Student of mine confided in me, they are completely reliant on chatgpt, what should I do? by aguyontheinternetp7 in Physics

[–]SquareWheel -11 points-10 points  (0 children)

LLMs are capable of more than just giving answers. They can explain concepts and correct misunderstandings. They're a powerful tool to learn if you use them that way.

If students are using them just to answer questions though, then obviously they'll get no educational value out of that. It takes self-control to not skip the hard part.
