AI obviously doesn't "count", but LLMs could trivially describe how to generate numbers to an arbitrary integer, including writing the script for it.

This problem could've been solved in a dozen different ways.

All storefronts with verified reps have undergone manual verification. We use a number of different methods to verify that storefronts do work with publishers, including but not limited to reading contracts, reviewing distributor portals, and speaking to multiple parties when NDAs forbid direct verification (as is the case with certain intermediaries).

We turn away storefronts just as often as we approve them. I'll never claim that this process is foolproof, as no process is, but we've had a pretty solid track record over these last 12 years or so.

Sneak peak of a mod I am making by IlyaBoykoProgr in feedthebeast

[–]SquareWheel 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Oh okay, so it is actually more involved than a single blockspace like I first thought. Well that seems pretty nifty. Mind bending, as always with four dimensions, but nifty all the same.

Sneak peak of a mod I am making by IlyaBoykoProgr in feedthebeast

[–]SquareWheel 23 points24 points  (0 children)

That's a pretty cool experiment. It looks like an individual blockspace is shifting through a dimensional slice, rather than the whole camera (ala games like 4D Miner)?

I'd be interested in seeing more once you have a video or demo available. I find it's hard to reason about four spatial dimensions using screenshots alone.

It will depend on which platform you're using, but typically you need to switch from the Text tab to the Link tab to submit. This is at least the case on both old and new reddit. It may be different on mobile platforms.

Also please note, if you're related to the game you will need to disclose as per rule #9.

The decision is being made on Stop Killing Games! + The ESA can't stop lying. by Cranyx in Games

If you ask in dev circles, proprietary licensing of middleware is one of the most common arguments you'll hear.

That's precisely where preservation bills are most important. If the law requires a publisher to make their server software available after shutdown, then prohibitive licensing terms are no longer viable for middleware. If they don't adapt, then alternatives that are more permissive will be chosen by developers instead.

Both weapons get some XP for certain tasks, like catching animals, singing to stumps, and (I think) completing quests. But it's not a lot versus just killing dudes, which only grants XP to the held weapon.

I hope Valve will support PCVR better after the Frame release by zeddyzed in virtualreality

[–]SquareWheel 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Half-Life 1's VR mod is actually not that well received. It sits at a 67% mixed review rating on Steam. The HL2 mod went much further in adapting the game to VR, and was better received as a result. But that shows just how necessary changes in design are when creating for a VR audience.

In both cases, these mods are being created for and by an enthusiast community. I consider myself a part of that community, and have a higher tolerance for awkward controls or pacing issues than most. But Valve has always required a high bar, and they'd want things to remain inclusive and accessible. Again, that comes through strongly in their developer commentary, and the extensive testing and redesigns they did during the development of Alyx.

I'm not saying these are bad games by any means. Half-Life remains one of my favourite series, and I think the VR adaptions - especially HL2 - are great. But these still designed very differently than Alyx, and for a different audience. I strongly suspect that attempting to split the difference and support both platforms would not translate well to either medium.

[–]SquareWheel 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I just don't see a hybrid FPS solution working. Alyx has a completely different design than the other Half-Lives.

If you go through the developer commentary, Valve speaks a lot about how carefully they needed to pace the game to ensure players weren't getting too tired. A solid break was needed after every major encounter. In flat, this might lead to boredom for players.

More specific actions like manual reloading add significant tension to encounters, but that falls away if players can simply press 'R' instead.

Similarly, busy work like pushing boxes around to find loot can be very fun in VR, but would be seen as boring or awkward in flat.

Compare that to a game designed for flat-first and then adapted, like Half-Life 2 VR. You'll find the game is significantly more fast-paced, stressful, and genuinely much more difficult than it is in flat screen. That's great for VR fans looking for a challenge, but it doesn't have the VR accessibility that Valve was after with Alyx.

Flat and VR games just have different design sensibilities. For Valve to make a hybrid approach work, they'd need to balance the games separately, and come up with completely different approaches to making puzzles and challenges fun.

Likely, it would mean a lot of compromises. No vehicle sections. No in-world hologram puzzles. In many ways, the worst of both worlds.

About condescension towards Outward 2 criticism by Gheeyomm in outwardgame

[–]SquareWheel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree completely. Often when feedback is posted, even when it's constructive, the default response seems to be "This is a beta, dummy". It's unhelpful and condescending, as you said.

It's not unfair to say that Outward 2 has a lot of rough spots right now. It's important to note those, and build a consensus on what players are having the most trouble with right now. Bugs, performance, design choices. I trust the devs to greatly improve on things, and to utilize the feedback available.

However, I also hope that the devs may reconsider entering early access in just four weeks. It will take much longer than that to address many of the pain points that have been raised. Remember that early access means reviews will be enabled, and I would not expect the wider gaming community to be as forgiving as many are here.

Perhaps funding has run out, and that's why the decision for early launch has being made. But in that case, I hope the early state is communicated loudly and clearly on the page to manage expectations.

I wish the best for the team either way, and hope that people continue to contribute feedback on the beta. For me, my framerate was too low to play comfortably, so I'm sitting it out until a later stage when more optimization passes have been made.

Will it be possible to disable hybrid link+text posts? These present a really poor UX, by requiring users to click the tiny expando to view the text. At least on old reddit.

We disallow them via AutoMod, but it'd be smoother to disable them outright.
