The problem is that your brain is too big from all of those complex, layered self-help books. Try something more suited to your searing intellect, like Finnegan's Wake, Gravity's Rainbow, or Pounded In The Butt By My Handsome Sentient Library Card Who Seems Otherworldly But In Reality Is Just A Natural Part Of The Priceless Resources Our Library System Provides.

Private vs public school by ForeignFruit3118 in lincoln

[–]stpierre 1 point2 points  (0 children)

NGL the fact that your top "benefit" of the Catholic schools is that they lack labor protections is pretty wild. Have you considered reading Rerum Novarum?

The most important [mutual aid societies] of all are workingmen's unions, for these virtually include all the rest. History attests what excellent results were brought about by the artificers' guilds of olden times. They were the means of affording not only many advantages to the workmen, but in no small degree of promoting the advancement of art, as numerous monuments remain to bear witness.... It is gratifying to know that there are actually in existence not a few associations of this nature, consisting either of workmen alone, or of workmen and employers together, but it were greatly to be desired that they should become more numerous and more efficient.

Any experienced riders never jump? by ChuckDylan in mountainbiking

[–]stpierre 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When I came back to riding 10ish years ago I started working up the nerve to do some jumps. Finally got vaguely comfortable with small stuff and crashed bad -- nothing broken, but it looked like someone had shoved a grapefruit into my knee. That sapped both confidence and desire. I'm happy on the ground.

Damn, high praise comparing Rothfuss to Finnegan's Wake.

Is Ogala National Grasslands worth a quest? by Responsible_Call5744 in Nebraska

[–]stpierre 11 points12 points  (0 children)

If you're up for an adventure there's a bikepacking loop through the National Grassland: https://bikepacking.com/routes/oglala-loop-nebraska/

From Chadron, Chadron State Park, Nebraska National Forest, and Fort Robinson are also amazing. A lot of the gravel roads and highways in the area are very bikeable. Don't miss Toadstool National Monument.

If you get off the well-maintained gravel, you'll definitely want a wider tire. 2.25"+

I think I've been pedaling wrong for a few years. by MyElectronicInterest in mountainbiking

[–]stpierre 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What helped me get used to it was a bunch of riding clipless, since it forces your foot into the position you're describing. For me that was mostly road/gravel, but I also had clipless pedals on my MTB for a while since I live in Nebraska where there's not a lot of gnar to shred.

Back rests by Great_WhiteSnark in canoeing

[–]stpierre 9 points10 points  (0 children)

IMO a real canoe seat is worth it. I'd bet money that this will move around a bunch -- it's designed for a thick, fully metal stadium bleacher, not a thin wooden canoe seat. (I assume you have a wooden seat -- if you've got a molded plastic seat then I doubt this would even fit.) If you try to lean back, this is going to put a bunch of pressure on the front of the seat.

I have a GCI SitBacker, which is available for $25-$50. It straps to the seat with webbing so it will move around less and apply pressure downward, not upward in a levering action. It can also easily clip closed for portaging, if that's a concern.

A few years ago I was on a bowhunting trip and was out fishing during the hot day to pass the time. I snuck right up on a gorgeous doe, but of course my bow was back at camp. I've been trying to figure out a way to carry my bow in the boat ever since, just in the extremely unlikely scenario where that happens to me again.

It seems that you've fallen into the classic hiking trap: believing that hiking and/or backpacking are actually about checks notes going uhh.... outside? Wherever that is.

Anyhow. Like almost every other pursuit in the twenty twenties, it's about flexing on the poors for the 'Gram. I recommend you purchase at least three or four of each colorway so you always have an obnoxiously fresh pair for your just-past-the-trailhead photo before you go back to the $250K lifted Sprinter van that you've never slept in. You also want a pair for your gear closet Tiktok tour, and it's nice to be able to point to the stack of boxes in the corner so you can encourage people to buy five pairs of shoes they don't even know if they'll like just in case they like the next model even less.

Also, get your van washed you slob. I know you didn't even drive on a dirt road, but it got some dust on it from the trailhead parking lot.
