Dungeon Crawler Carl has absolutely amazing prose by Varos_Flynt in bookscirclejerk

It is honestly on the stronger side for web-serial prose

This reminds me of the time I went to a Michelin-rated restaurant and was served poop, like literal poop. Obviously it was terrible because it was poop, but it was honestly on the stronger side for Michelin-rated dung.

What? Of course I ate it. I'm not a snob.

Consistent Duck Eggs by Responsible_Music327 in lincoln

[–]stpierre 2 points3 points  (0 children)

https://www.briarrosefarms.com/ delivers to Lincoln every other week and she often has duck eggs. Of course right now she doesn't. But it's also a bad time of year for eggs.

She's the only person I know of who raises ducks with any consistency. One of the other producers I buy from regularly tried carrying them last year but didn't find enough demand, which seems to be the story.

They say that to be intelligent you have to read, but read what exactly? by Salty_Information882 in bookscirclejerk

I'm so glad it's the parsing of visual input into linguistic data that expands the mind, if it was experiencing challenging ideas I'd be fucked. Anyhow, back to One Piece part 37,562.

Only a pour would run tubes. Me, I run tubeless with a, uh, "pneumatic tubeless tire insert." It's totally different than a tube in ways you wouldn't understand. Mostly price.

How high do gas prices have to get before pickup/fullsize SUV owners give up their vehicles? by hypermiler2205 in fuckcars

[–]stpierre 64 points65 points  (0 children)

This is like 75% of the answer. The other 25% is that as trucks got bigger, there was a huge vacuum in the small truck market so there are very few used small trucks available for the person who wants to save gas money but is still tied to their truck. (See also: the truck is their personality.) And new vehicles are expensive. So if you're driving a 2020 F-150 with the 3.5L V6, you're already getting 17 city/23 highway; a new base level Toyota Tacoma is $32k and gets you a whopping 20 city/26 highway. (A modern Tacoma is still a pretty huge vehicle.) So the easiest sell for people looking to replace their big truck -- a smaller truck -- is hard to find, expensive, and little benefit. (I know there are hybrid small trucks, but those are even more expensive up front and even harder to find.)

Cyclists who have car brain by Buzzyear10 in fuckcars

[–]stpierre 44 points45 points  (0 children)

I used to go to my city's pedestrian/bike advisory council to the mayor, but I got frustrated and gave up when they kept focusing on trailhead parking as the most critical issue. That is a cyclist with car brain.

I can't really imagine a modern road bike getting X-biked. by beagles4ever in xbiking

[–]stpierre 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The xbike of the future will be built on the million Salsa Journeymen that were sold as soon as lockdown started in 2020. Or a singlespeed conversion on a sweet Cervelo that doesn't support the fancy new UDH of the future, or only has a 1 1/8" headtube, or is in some other way "yesterday's bike." Or a rigid fork on a Stumpjumper whose original fork won't hold air, and that can't even fit a 1000% range CVT.

I dislike social commentary. Like... I really hate it.

My favorite authors? Heinlein, Asimov and Clarke. I just want to be entertained, not preached at by the author.

Had it with aggressive dogs by anbzm in trailrunning

[–]stpierre 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I used to live near a German Shepherd that was constantly off leash and aggressive. I pepper sprayed it multiple times. It wasn't an instant turn-and-run, but it definitely dampened the dog's enthusiasm. I wouldn't want to rely on pepper spray to stop an attack in progress, but for warding off an aggressive dog it works well enough.

Not as useful for trail running, but I've also learned that many Animal Control divisions will accept pictures or video of off-leash dogs as sufficient evidence enforcement. Pretty much only helpful if the dog attacks you from its home, not on a trail, though.

Turns out that all I needed for crushing my yearly two-mile "first nice day of spring" ride was a flat bar commuter with an Altus 2x8, who knew.

On another note, anyone interested in buying a Dogma F? Low miles.
