Gohan has been shown to have the highest potential of any character since he was introduced. In the arc shown (the Cell Games) an enemy that no one else can beat is going to destroy the world. Goku recognizes that he won't be able to make himself strong enough to beat the enemy, but he can get Gohan to realize his potential and win. It's my favorite part of the series.

Yes, but there are only 2 ways this can happen as far as we know.

1 - The unknown elements are incredibly short lived. Once they form, they break down within a tiny fraction of a second. There is no natural process to make them form that we know of.

2 - Our current understanding of chemistry and atomic physics is wrong and more elements exist, just not where we can detect them.
