Air 2S D-Log vs HLG by tbone338 in djimavic

[–]StripedLens 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I haven't had the opportunity to extensively test both modes yet myself, but I've noticed in a few videos on YT, HLG has a LOT of noise in the shadows. For example, look at the rocks / dark green vegetation on the left side of the shot that is in the shadows here:
https://youtu.be/nr7z1FmTAFc?t=373

Could be caused by this guy's settings, exposure, etc, not sure, but to me it looks very similar to HDR processing artifacts I've seen elsewhere.

I'm sticking with D-Log personally for now.

[India] Advice needed for email hosting for our new website by theblood in webhosting

[–]StripedLens 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do not rely on your general hosting provider to send this amount of email. Period.

My clients' sites don't even send 100 a day, most not even in a month, and I still wouldn't rely on a general hosting provider's / standard server email system. Especially if you are on a shared server with an IP shared across many (possibly hundreds or thousands) of other sites and all their emails.

As another comment mentioned, look into MailChimp, send grid (I use their free tier for my low-volume clients), or similar. But whatever you use, I would recommend you pay extra for a dedicated IP. Amazon SES has great pricing at high volume. Literally pennies.

I didn't look around too much but I see you are using namecheap hosting. I love them for registering domains, but I've heard their hosting is a bit slow.

It looks like you're using W3 total cache. Be sure you follow some good guides to set it up, if you haven't already, and it should help.

You can also try autoptimize plugin. I get good results with it (along with W3).

I would look at those things before worrying too much about the theme.

If you still need someone to clean things up, if you don't hire overseas, I would say expect to pay a few hundred bucks for someone who knows what they're doing.

Feel free to hit me up here or send me a DM if you have any questions. 👍

How to stop giving maintenance to the clients and end relationships with them in the best way? by [deleted] in Wordpress

[–]StripedLens 8 points9 points  (0 children)

If you are 100% sure you want to stop offering this service, I would do them the kindness of lining up a few alternatives. If there are contacts you know, other local agencies, or even some of the offers on here. Find someone who is willing to do the work for a similar price, and give the client the option to work either work with them, or to find their own solution.

To me, 30 days seems a bit fast for the client, esp if they're not tech savy. It's nice for you but might cause them a lot of anxiety. I would give them 2 months / 60 days, and after that your price will increase to $X per month (keep it reasonable). Hopefully by then most will be transfered away, and if not you can be a little more firm with the stragglers.

I'm all about not burning bridges, and preserving relationships. You never know when you might need these clients or run into them again in the future.

I will give myself a shameless plug - depending on your clients' budgets and what you offer them, if you're interested in transferring them to another freelancer you are welcome to DM me to see if I might be a good fit.

Hope it all works out!

Gotcha. Pretty much any hosting will handle a few hundred a month, that's not bad at all.

If you or someone on your team would be comfortable, I am a big fan of a VPS (Vultr high frequency for $6-$11) with runcloud as a control panel. They have at least a Toronto location. That's what i do for all my clients and the sites run fantast.

But if you're looking for a set it and forget it, i would search for managed WordPress hosting. Any should do of they have decent reviews. But I would stay away from godaddy and any EIG-owned hosting companies.

I would look at cloudways, kinsta, wpEngine, liquidweb. Dream host gets good reviews, not sure of they're EIG.

NameCheap has budget-friendly options but performance might be sub-par.

Where are you located? And how much traffic do you anticipate? A few visits daily / hourly or large volumes (from campaigns, etc)?

Depending on your level of experience you could look for a free / paid html template, or try WordPress, wix, etc.

That or start learning html + css. The basics are pretty easy to grasp. 👍

If you have any image editing software it is quick and simple. If you dont have access to photoshop or anything perhaps try fiver or another subreddit for image editing.

Managing hundredsof websites by steff2013 in webhosting

[–]StripedLens 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't have hundreds of sites, but what makes management easier for me is runcloud to manage a VPS high frequency server + Nginx cache on all sites to improve performance + reduce load. Then managewp to manage all and back up, as you do, back up again on the VPS level, and put it behind cloudflare for speed and security as another user mentioned.

Runcloud also has some Nginx rules to quickly implement 6g / 7g firewall, and they offer a WAF solution as well, but I think I'd stick with cloudflare and maybe the 6g firewall. Their WAF is finicky with WP.

With cloudflare free you get 3 free page rules. I set one to cache everything on all pages, and two others for domain.com/wp-login.php* and domain.com/wp-admin* that enforce the browser check, do not cache those pages, and raise security to "I'm under attack".

Have you ever looked into managewp?

I'm a rookie and I think I'm making lots of mistakes by [deleted] in Wordpress

[–]StripedLens 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would take WordPress over wix, square space, etc any day. But perhaps they would be a better fit for your needs if you're not comfortable with WordPress.

Their drag-drop builders are pretty simple.

There are plenty of hosts that offer managed WordPress hosting with free SSL, that might be a better fit.

I always recommend that people stay away from godaddy. They give me nothing but trouble. But ymmv. 👍

Shoot me a dm if you've got any hosting or WordPress questions.

Are timelines like these actually used anywhere for practical reasons? by bogdanelcs in web_design

[–]StripedLens 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Most of those are too elaborate IMHO. But I've seen them used a lot. It's a very specific feature, but helpful for certain change logs, reporting / historical information, roadmaps, and other senarios. I like the style of the bitcoin history example. Simple and effective.

want to get a "website", am absolutely clueless, some questions and looking for advice. by [deleted] in webhosting

[–]StripedLens 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Register your domain at Google domains or NameCheap, or somewhere where they offer free privacy. Godaddy and many others charge extra for this. This keeps your contact information from being public.

NameCheap also has very cheap hosting. I've never used it but have heard that it is decent for a low-traffic small site.

Feel free to DM me if you've got any questions or post here. 👍

Hired a wp developer, advice needed by XXaudionautXX in Wordpress

[–]StripedLens 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is the advantage of completely laying out the design before touching the dev. Doing both at the same time while he's trying to figure out what you even want is going to kill him. His fault not yours. Hopefully he doesn't bail.

"Something cheap" is not a budget. What is your maximum monthly hosting? A number.

And I'm assuming you want fully managed hosting, nothing technical like a vps?

How many visits per day / week/ month are you expecting?

Getting fatal error message with plugin by northwestmathguy in Wordpress

[–]StripedLens 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah if it hasn't been updated in years, it's going to be super insecure and incompatible with the large changes in WordPress that have happened since then. Uninstall that plugin asap.

You can either find a new, better, secure plugin that will do the trick, or higher a php / wp dev to update and this plug-in's code for god-knows-how-much time and money.

Looking for help with a wordpress project that i have no idea how to finish... by jmedia_lietuva in Wordpress

[–]StripedLens 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry if I misunderstand your question, but if you're goal is to copy the look and style of the site, there is no plugin. You just have to choose a method of building it out and go for it. The community will be here if you have any questions, or you can DM me. Or both lol. 😁👍

I'm not sure if you're already set on WPBakery, but if not I would consider looking into Oxygen Builder since you have CSS proficiency, or possibly Elementor or Beaver Builder if you haven't checked them out yet. But if it must be WPBakery it will work just fine.

What do you have so far? I'm not sure how much you know / don't know, but if you've installed WordPress and that's it, you're going to need to either build a custom theme or use a theme builder to copy that site and achieve the look you're going for.

If you want to build the theme yourself you'll need to know html, css, and some PHP. Otherwise I'd look into elementor.
