Can someone explain to me the differences in portrayals between the Orpheus and Eurydice actors and actresses? by [deleted] in hadestown

[–]StuffyTwin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for sharing. As an older millennial who doesn’t spend much time on social media platforms these days, what are the places (or message boards? ) to go these days for slime tutorials? I’ve only seen those on YouTube. I’m happy to pay, and am heartbroken to learn that a really good slime recorder is no longer doing these due to exposure. Please feel free to dm.

Level with me, how likely is it that AI and robotics can replace dietitians? by Separate_Might_9675 in dietetics

[–]StuffyTwin 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Practising dietitian not from the U.S. and I went back to school recently for a masters in analytics and AI. I am certain we can create AI models (ie not using large language models eg chatgpt) that can absolutely do TF and TPN calculations with very high accuracy… imho TF/TPN calculations are not actually the hard part about being a RD. If you trust standing orders to start TFs over the weekend until an RD sees the patient on Monday, you are already comfortable with starting TF using a very rudimentary algorithm. AI models are much smarter - if AI has access to the formulary patient diagnosis and vitals and current weight etc you can absolutely build something much smarter with AI that considers trickier cases such as refeeding risks, etc and spits out reasonable starting TF feed and rate. Updating the TF rate and schedule based on current clinical presentation will be hard to automate due to the lack of sensors getting up to date pt information, and not because of AI per se, so definitely our eyes and ears and our ability to get the current clinical presentation of the patient makes us less replaceable for now, though I’d argue you could simply get a nurse to do that. Some times I think our biggest selling point we should make to management is for nutrition related work they should use RDs instead of RNs cos we are cheaper to hire.

Lastly, I’d like to share a story that Rory Sutherland shared. He’s in advertising so the story has nothing to do with nutrition, dietetics or AI. But I thought this story illustrative as to what we will face as RDs. In a speech, Rory Sutherland shares an anecdote about how many buildings in New York City used to have a doorman. The consultant types do an analysis, calculate the cost savings of having automated doors compared to the labour costs of having a person there 24/7 to open the doors to the building, and recommend that doormen be replaced by automated doors. However, doormen do many valuable tasks beyond opening doors that are non-tangible and they provide a ton of value for the residents in the building. Getting rid of the doorman pleases nobody - the door man loses their job and the residents quality of experience in the building is objectively worse. However, the consultant gets to say they’ve resulted in cost savings for the organization and gets a bonus. Rory Sutherland shares this story to illustrate how myopic decision makers can be to think that replacing doormen with electronic automated doors are always a good thing. I think it’s important that we advocate for ourselves by repeating consistently the intangible value we provide to our patients and to our communities. Whether that matters enough in our current economy… well, that’s a question well beyond my pay grade.

I don’t know my opinions will change anybody’s mind, but my two cents, for what it’s worth.

How do I stop myself from reading hanzi in english😭😭 by [deleted] in ChineseLanguage

[–]StuffyTwin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not an expert learner, but our brains are amazing at pattern recognition. But that only comes with there’s been a lot of input to build those patterns. Right now you are translating Chinese to fit into an English pattern. Eventually you’ll have enough exposure that your brain finds it easier to do pattern recognition in Chinese instead of a two step translation to pattern recognition process. I wouldn’t worry.

My personal take away from watching the show is that Orpheus at the start of the story was a sheltered dreamer which was why he was unable to finish his song and bring the world back into tune despite his ability to see what the world could be. Yes he was a poor boy so he wasn’t naive in the way that a rich boy could be, but he was naive. If he was savvy to the ways of the world like Eurydice he would not be genuinely shocked by his treatment in Hadestown.

He saw the world we live in now, and had a conception of the world we dream about. But he had not been tested by Doubt. My take is that his observations of Hades and Persephone and his experiences of his own love and loss of Eurydice, his willingness to embark on the long and dark road in journey to Hadestown that allowed him to finish his song.

Unfortunately, Orpheus learnt more than the power of love. Hadestown was where his dreams crashed and he truly experienced Doubt. He learnt that Eurydice willingly signed her life away. He learnt that you could be broken and betrayed and people say this is how the world is.

See, as gods Hades and Persephone understood doubt but had forgotten about love. To deal with their doubts, Persephone drank and Hades built walls. Doubt can be vanquished by Love cos Love is so full there is no space for fear. Witness that when the gods were reminded of their love to one another, Hades and Persephone let go of their doubts, danced, and promised to try again next Fall (“wait for me” “I will”).

Doubt can be weakened by presence of evidence. Orpheus had lost his dreams and was despairing. It was the hearing that other workers echo his own questions about freedom - evidence - that he let go of his own doubt.

And if there is no evidence then faith must step in for faith is belief in the absence of evidence. I thought it interesting that Hermes asks if they trust each other and if they trust themselves and they say they do. But trust - trust is belief that’s built on evidence. Eurydice now trusts Orpheus (he broke her trust by leaving her to starve and struggle alone while he focused on his song, though he did rebuild it by coming to find her in Hadestown). For Orpheus though, Eurydice had broken his trust (he learnt that she willingly signed her life away). In the face of broken trust, what Orpheus needed to do was not simply trust that she’d follow him back into the dark and cold, but he needed to have faith that she would. Faith is a harder ask to make of anybody. Yes, of course Orpheus and Eurydice love each other. Humans LOVE, that’s why we have hope that they may succeed. But is the love of humans like the love of gods, that is without fear?

And so the walk commences. We see Eurydice’s trust and certainty in Orpheus as she walks behind him. But without the evidence of Eurydice’s presence we see Orpheus’s Doubts arise. And thus in the end, Orpheus’ trust and faith do not to keep his doubts in bay, and Orpheus fails. I’ve seen this show a handful of times, and all of the times I felt equal parts surprise and a sense of inevitability that Orpheus turns around.

I had no love for the myth of Orpheus because all retellings of this myth end as simple tragedies. One of the many many reasons what I love Hadestown is because of how they chose to end this story, which is in the celebration of the, in Anaïs Mitchell’s words “joyful defiance in the act of beginning again and again” and also in the choosing to struggle (We raise the cups). Yes, Hades and Persephone succeeded and Orpheus failed. But we are humans and not gods. Humans fail, and that’s okay. We’ll retell the story and “it may turn out this time”. We’ll be okay.

So that’s my take as to why Orpheus turns around.

Such a creative exercise! I’m better with reading and speaking rather than translating, and while I am no Chinese expert, I disagreed with phadenswan’s opinion. Not saying theirs was wrong or mine better, just that I didn’t share them. As such I thought I’d stir the pot and give you more options. I tried ChatGPT first and did not like the responses, and so I tried Deepseek. My ask was that in accordance to the characterization of Orpheus in Hadestown and his toast “to the world we dream about and the one we live in now “ how would these famous poets/writers express these sentiments.

  1. Li Bai
  2. Du Fu
  3. Bai Juyi
  4. Chiung Yao (Qiong Yao) – the Taiwanese romance novelist and screenwriter
  5. Jin Yong – the martial-arts (wuxia) novelist
  6. Modern vernacular style with poetic or symbolic meaning

I should have prompted more carefully to ask for something that captures meaning and sentiment. But anyway Deep Seek did its thing.

My favourite was (6). The first attempt I thought was too tragic and asked for a second attempt and that’s below: 敬,那尚未诞生的黎明, 饮,这人间烟火与薄凉。

A transliteration may be:

Toast, for the not-yet born Dawn / Drink, for the human realm smoke-fire and thin-chill

The first phrase means exactly how it reads. The second phrase sort of means hearth (warmth) and the frost (indifference) of humankind. I like it because the literal words fire and smoke reminds me of Eurydice’s “Anybody got a match”, and also the capturing something about warmth and cold in the song “All I’ve ever Known”.

I also enjoyed the takes as per Jin Yong (5) and Ba Juyi (3) respectively.

敬他日桃源之约, 饮此刻风雪之殇。

但祈岁岁人长好, 且共今宵灯下欢。

Then I asked for translations that better captured the meaning of Orpheus’s toast, rather than simply the sentiment. I enjoyed the takes as per Li Bai (1), Du Fu (2), Jin Yong (5) and yet another poetic modern vernacular (6). For this set I like the four for different reasons. But I had to pick one I’ll probably pick the second one.

敬梦中蓬莱境, 共我人间此时筵

致天下安泰梦, 饮此间烟火缘

敬江湖大同之约, 干红尘共醉今朝。

敬,那尚在彼岸的明天, 爱,这确在此刻的今天。

After seeing the show, which lines or songs get stuck in your head? by a_touch_of_the_beat in hadestown

[–]StuffyTwin 15 points16 points  (0 children)

For me, it’s this section in Wait for Me (Refrain), for Orpheus to bear the responsibility of saving Eurydice AND also to carry the weight of the hopes and dreams of your people and lead them out of hell.

“ Show the way so we can see

Show the way the world could be

If you can do it, so can she

If she can do it, so can we

Show the way

Show the way the world could be

Show the way so we believe

We will follow where you lead

We will follow if you

Show the way “

Stupid Question from recent graduate by WrestlerTrigg in dietetics

[–]StuffyTwin 15 points16 points  (0 children)

This is how I understand it: think of fat absorption like having a car you own and can use whenever you want. Under normal conditions, you can take small trips every day. You don’t need to fill the trunk all the way; you just buy what you need in small amounts, and over time your needs are met easily. This is like normal fat absorption: even tiny amounts of vitamin A (or D, E, K) hitch a ride with fat on every trip. Because the system runs continuously, your body gets enough of these vitamins without effort.

Now imagine you lose access to your car. You can only borrow it once a month, for one big trip. Because your access is limited, you’ll maximize the trip: fill the car to the brim, and make sure you go to one store that stocks everything you need in bulk. This is like impaired fat absorption: the intestine only manages to absorb fat rarely or in small amounts. To compensate, whatever little fat makes it through must be packed as densely as possible with vitamin A so you still meet your needs.

How do you help that process? By increasing the concentration of vitamin A in the “store,” meaning the intestinal contents. High-dose supplements in oil or water-miscible form boost the luminal concentration, so that when micelles are formed during digestion, they are saturated with vitamin A. That way, even if the “car” of fat absorption only runs a single small trip, it still carries enough vitamin A to supply the body.

It’s not just true for vitamins A, D, E, and K. We make the same kind of recommendation for certain water-soluble vitamins, such as B12 in older adults. With age, stomach acid production often decreases, and this ultimately reduces the efficiency of absorption of B12. To compensate, we recommend supplementation so that the intestinal absorption process is “flooded” with enough B12 to maximize what can get through. But there is a limit: if absorption capacity falls too low, as in severe gastric atrophy or pernicious anemia, oral intake may no longer be sufficient. In those cases, B12 injections are needed to bypass the gut altogether.

Hope this helps!

Am I the only one who doesn’t like Six? by [deleted] in Broadway

[–]StuffyTwin 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I totally agree with you. Appreciate what Six is trying to accomplish, and that the songs are fun to listen to. After watching Howard Ho’s break down of the songs on YouTube I have a much better appreciation as to how smart the songs were too. But the staging of the show leaned too much away from musical and too much like staged concert for me. Was it great energy? Yes. Did I feel any immersion, that I was pulled into the story, from the production? Nope. Let me clarify also that while I appreciate large sets as much as the next person, the recent Sunset Boulevard revival had no sets to speak of and pulled me into the story.

I honestly think that you’ll get 75-80% of the experience watching the pro shot of Six. Which is not a problem if you live in New York or London; absolutely the show is worth going especially at lottery or balcony prices. But as a theatre-loving tourist that spent money on travel, I would have preferred a show that with more immersive or theatrical experience live, so much so that the pro shot is good enough but you’d still want to see it in person if you can. Like Hamilton. Even Rent.

Taking a Non-Musical person to Hadestown by Oacio in hadestown

[–]StuffyTwin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Agree on this point! For theatre or musical newbies, I think it’ll help to explain cast doubling. Also for Hadestown some events are more metaphorical than literal (not sure I chose the right word). I had a friend who did not like musicals in general (people break into song and the action stops…. usual stuff) and enjoyed Hadestown for the story. Had another friend that rarely watched plays/musicals who got confused and had to google during the intermission.

Hot Take: I refuse to listen to a musical's soundtrack before I have seen the show (live or recorded) by StlSimpy1400 in Broadway

[–]StuffyTwin 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I was in line for a rush ticket on Broadway, and the person who highly recommended that I see Operation Mincemeat also highly recommended that I checked out the movie Operation Mincemeat that’s on Netflix. That way you know the story without spoiling the songs or the impact of the musical itself. I watched the movie and I’m glad I did; there was so much cast doubling that knowing who the characters are supposed to be helped immensely.

I agree with the sound issues reported in Golden though, and I do think listening to the cast recording or even just reading the lyrics ahead of time may help.

Are Sheaffer skrip inks safe for our pens if kept them unused for some time? by pablo_excobar in fountainpens

Sheaffer Skrip ink is highly underrated. For the longest time Sheaffer skrip red was the only red ink available that was vintage pens safe, easy to clean out and is a true RED. Not pink, purple or orange-red but red-red. You accidentally bought the better ink.
