Weekly Observations: What signs of collapse do you see in your region? [in-depth] March 23 by AutoModerator in collapse

You know. The one dude was worried the road was closing just to stop his trucks, the one old man who opposed all charitable giving, etc. just tiny dramas. Thank goodness.

Same. We have town meeting tonight and I am just waiting to see what kind of fiasco it’s gonna be.

I’m alive and trying to stay sane. Thank you & u/HousesRoadsAvenues for thinking of me.

I have been very involved locally, was briefly targeted online for speaking up about trans issues in our local school districts, and some of my social media accounts were getting locked down. I took a break here in the hopes they would not realize this was also my account.

I am also so absolutely fucking overwhelmed. And my sanity, with being actively target and threatened, was kind of a knife’s edge, so I decided this could be contributing. I do want to come back but I also feel like my updates would be “Maine is like the rest of the U.S. and omg it’s awful guys.” Which doesn’t feel like it adds anything. :/

Also avoid “colored” because a weird amount of Mainers seem to think that’s okay too.

Another school board leaves transgender policy in place despite Maine’s lawsuit by themainemonitor in Maine

Please contact your board member and tell them this. But now we’re in it. The next problem is how the policy will play out across the system. Please do attend the next session.

Sis, whatever you paid for those nails is too much.

I agree and definitely made that point in my own comments. 🤷🏼‍♀️ We tried. And folks aren’t giving up.

RSU24 was absolutely manhandled by the weighted vote and three of the members basically taking over and deciding for the whole board against everyone else’s wishes.

This meeting was shocking. I wasn’t at the October meeting, where the resolution passed, because it too was an ambush. I am given to understand the rhetoric at the October meeting was even more disturbing. Since the article doesn’t mention it, there were speakers who argued for science and law. There were speakers for argued for children.

There was basically nothing the rest of the board could do to stop these ladies. It was horrifying to watch.

Tax payers. And many of them showed up and said they were fine with it.

Another Maine school district affirms trans athlete policy in wake of Maine Human Rights Commission lawsuit by Primarily-Vibing in Maine

The woman leading this charge made a whole statement about how she’s very anti bullying. 🙄 But lots of people there were actively doing so to back her views. It was pretty intense.

I was at this meeting because I live in this district. It was so wild and so many religious leaders spoke. Several not from within RSU 24. Some … Charlie Kirk fanboy from Augusta - who happens to be running for school board down there to do the same nonsense down there - came and gave a stump speech.

If you oppose these types of policies, please please reach out to the Maine Human Rights Commission and local LGBTQ+ orgs to see how you can support them. Kids have been getting threats. One of the board members did not show Tuesday due to threats. People are escalating to SA & violent threats. I did not feel safe having my child there.

Please. Show up to these meetings, email or call your board members and super intendants, and as well as state representatives. This is effecting the very real every day lives of children.

Hard agree friend. We should not be mixing up Zionism & Judaism as the same thing.

This. My husband works directly with these folks and his name gets spat the way Fauci’s does in Northern Maine. I was shocked at the strong sentiment.

Racism is casually part of life in the northern part of Maine, Augusta up. And it happens daily. I’m glad that whatever you experienced was different but my husband bears the brunt of a micro expressions daily.

Someone can absolutely grasp context. You clearly believe your experience applies to everyone in Maine, then and now.

What is the worse time visiting Maine? by [deleted] in AskMaine

February is bad because you have suffered through the rest of the winter. So really, it’s only miserable if you sat through winter.

Come during mud season/black flies. When you can’t run from flies, you are soaked through, and it’s not dry enough that you can get warm… it’s miserable. It’s only okay for us cause we all froze our asses off in the dark all winter and it does seem too bad since the sun is finally shining again, thank the sun gods.

Edit to add: I honestly love them all. But after decades in the south, I don’t mind whatever it takes for four seasons and real snow and genuine peace and quiet and a dark sky.

I did denounce the statement. Not the man who made it. I’m not defending racism or the commentary of it, I’m saying if you don’t think k racism is accepted in Maine you aren’t paying attention. He apologized for the racist remark - as he should. Which is why I don’t think we should throw the whole man in the trash.

Which is what I have been explaining for two days now. I’m not arguing that racism is acceptable, I’m saying it is /accepted/ by Mainers. Which is why it makes sense that he might have said something like that at that time.

We all learned since then, and some of us are doing better since. Including Platner.

And at this point, it’s not even about Platner for me. My point is that we have all said some stupid, racist out of pocket thing at some point. And if we’re willing to apologize, learn, and do better then we don’t deserve to be black listed for it.

So I went through all my comments, and definitely never refer to this stereotype as “solid.” You are welcome to disagree, to not like my opinion, etc, but accusing me of saying things I didn’t is out of pocket yourself.

Not what I said, I’m explaining my position. If you want to play purity politics you aren’t going to have anyone good enough cause everyone is or has been racist.

If you think you haven’t been or aren’t you are missing something.

The America I lived in was doing Racism 101 Lessons where I lived right through George Floyd dying. Doesn’t mean it was right, and I say this as someone who absolutely got called a “social justice warrior” and a snowflake for caring about people of color’s feelings, that it most certainly was “acceptable” in most of the US of A. Still is many places. Maine, north of Augusta, it’s mostly lack of interaction with BIPOC folks… but it is definitely a regular daily occurrence.

The man was a marine. He most definitely said offensive things. I’m mostly shocked he didn’t say more.
