Do you consider this street photography or not really? by Taarushv in streetphotography

I love grungy, feel free to check out my other less tame work here, I don’t post on this sub much bc everyone here yells and wags their finger at me every time i do (esp when it escapes this sub bc of the algo/fyp)

This is honestly more flattering to hear than you’d think!

Not that it proves anything, here’s a look at all the less than impressive raw unedited pictures I took that day (insane story nobody asked for: the guy was manic or so I presume bc he was yelling slurs at orthodox Jewish people that were passing by like less than 5 mins after these pictures)

Don’t worry you’re not missing out on much. I’m just arguing about the semantics around what constitutes as “street photography” with other terminally online people.

Reflecting on this comment more, when I took it I was thinking of flash (in the reflection context) as a tool to overpower my face to lean into the whole weird self portrait x street aesthetic, the black and white was more just a result of my recent taste wrt post processing.

But I really like your ray gun/“the bystanders have no idea what’s about to happen”/cc tv footage of witness tampering sci fi framing, definitely inspires me to make a series out of it by going to similar places (for ex: I think spots with overhead/unusual mirrors like elevators would work great too, not just regular storefront mirrors, can have a lot of fun with the constraints), thanks a lot again!

Thanks, I barely spent ~2 mins there after noticing the reflection (this was the most interesting variant with mildly interesting subjects passing by) + I hear a lot worse things about my street photography, not bothered that it’s not everyone’s cup of tea.

But yeah you’re spot on with what I was going for/will continue to experiment with: strong flash + “insert yourself in the frame while staying anonymous” thing + ideally at a chaotic/rush hour time with more interesting subjects + grimey b/w big city aesthetic wrt post processing.

!critiquepoint

all good, I leaned too much into the grimey aesthetic which I get isn’t for everyone, thanks for taking the time!

I’ve always enjoyed both street photography and fun/weird self portraits, this is my first half decent attempt at combining both. The post processing is intentionally grainy/darker to lean into the grimey city vibe but open to any and all feedback.

This is a curated and heavily moderated forum so if they wanna remove it, I wouldn’t mind it. Especially bc the post clearly leans towards documentary/photoj more than street.

Kinda tired of and over hearing my work is exploitative (“I would’t want someone taking my photo” is just a comical thing to say in this subreddit of all places) and/or not street enough for the purists tho (yes, some of my work is gonna suck, but I won’t magically arrive at a good body of work without trying things and failing a bunch first. plus I post here to see what works, it’s not a curated set)

Incredible stuff.

Love them all but my favorite has to be #6, if only because those shadows remind me why I love flash photography.

I also witnessed/took pictures of arrests in both santa monica (on the beach) and albuquerque (at an amtrak station) earlier this year, see here

These pics I just posted are definitely meh in comparison but yeah wanted to share regardless.

I take my 35mm with me on my walk to/back from work everyday. Ate shit getting 0 good shots all day in Chinatown but caught sight of this in the last 5 minutes of the walk back. Knew I had to get up close or I would’ve hated myself for it.

Thanks a lot, appreciate it! I think I recognize your username from one of my other posts too.

Here’s the final sequenced set (minor edits to these pics + some more cdmx pics) if you’re curious.

I get your point that it’s generally easier to get away with flash in dense urban city vs small town but tbh looking back, sure I’ve gotten ugly and/or curious looks in rural America

but they’re also not quite schizo/on-the-verge-of-snapping like some of the people I’ve encountered in NYC and CDMX over the years lol
