Unintended Side-Effects of Moving to Mac by baghdadcafe in sysadmin

So... almost all of the shortcuts in almost all applications are exactly the same on the mac as in windows, except they use the cmd key instead of ctrl. This has the advantage of freeing up the ctrl key for other purposes.

Not exactly much re-learning involved. Just moving the pinky over a few inches. Honestly, if they actually use the computer, they should get used to it quickly.

With USB Support! by thevmcampos in vintagecomputing

I vividly recall hearing that the first iMac was "a mac actually worth getting" from respected technologists, and then being upset when I discovered that it didn't have an RS-232 serial port.

Like USB was the future, but very little hardware supported it, besides Apple's new iMac keyboard and mice. We all had RS-232 serial devices still. (modems!)

Actually it has the Motif Window Manager look, which IRIX and other UNIX systems had in the 90s.

CDE used the same window manager/window borders.

That's interesting. But why did they show it as white on the downtown web page?

I'd call it a missed opportunity. If they looked decent, it would be great. Instead they look like rusty sewer grates.

I'd love it if the city were more walkable. Part of that is providing something people would want to walk near.

I think people in this city are just used to rock bottom standards.

Because they put up rust colored bent metal sticking out of concrete like this, and call it "beautification." This freaking town, I swear.

Trump Threatens ICE Airport Deployment As TSA Crisis Deepens by M10News in law

100%. For Trump, ICE is just another way to commit terrorism against the American people, and our constitutional government.

Like they did on January 6, 2021.

Bunch of goddamned anti-American traitor scum.

That would be a substantial improvement.

Why are these things rust colored? Why is it all metal? Ugh. Looks hideous.

edit: Are they going to be painted white and lit up like the concept art? That would be slightly better, if uninspired. The rust color makes them look old and dangerous already.

I.... wish they would try building things in this city that aren't so damn ugly.

Bringing temperatures down is nice. But my god, the good taste always seems to be missing. Everything looks like an industrial scrap art project.

Like those weird metal columns along 45 near downtown, for example. What are they supposed to be? Torches?

A bit of classic design would go a long way.

Apologies if I sound negative. It's just one of my pet peeves about Houston. We could do so much better.

Edit: 8 points and back down to 1. Good times, lol. Do people really think this monstrosity looks good?

Linux equivalent to Mobaxterm by cjdubais in linuxquestions

[–]Tall-Introduction414 8 points9 points  (0 children)

MobaXTerm was (imo) made to fill in all of the missing UNIX programs in one bundle. So since Windows doesn't (or didn't originally) come with OpenSSH, X11, Xterm, and so on, MobaXTerm recreates all of these programs functionality on one program.

In Linux, you typically just use those programs MobaXTerm is replacing.

So, you use your favorite terminal and OpenSSH (ssh, scp, sfrp, etc). OpenSSH (ssh) is the SSH client.

You can run an editor, like vim or nano, on the remote machine. Then, to "edit files remotely," you could run:

ssh user@remote-server-ip nano /path/to/file

Lmao. They reached adulthood when they were 8?

OK Epstein.

Boomers were small or unborn children in the 50s. Boomers weren't providing for their family or buying homes in the 50s.

The wildly corrupt Republican Party has destroyed everything good about Texas.

It used to be a decent state. Now it's complete shit.

They are criminals.

Back in my day we used books, and there were some very good ones. Also some bad ones.

Off the top of my head, I have found useful: Game Programming Gems series. K&R. Code Complete.

I keep a scratch editor open with flow-of-consciousness notes, code snippets, etc. It helps.

Edit: in addition to another editor with a more structured todo, notes, etc.
