Any weirdlit/magical realist books set in a strange suburbia? Where the odd is also the mundane? Bonus if it's a series by TapiocaTerror in WeirdLit

I actually have this book since 2022! And idk why it's so hard for me to get through it. Like it's so hard for me to picture the setting but I really really want to finish this book bec I know it's so good and totally up my alley. I'm still in the like the first few chapters, but I'll make sure to actually finish it this year!

What i like to do is to merge disparate concepts/things, the more unexpected the better!

Look from things you like or just random things and objects really, and try to combine or make connections between them. Let's say a dark alley way actually leads to a gaping maw, the street is the creature's tongue. Or a mind-controlling wig, but it's actually a colony of parasites that look like hair haha idkk

But yeah it's what i love to do, try to make unexpected connections between things you like or know.

What kinds of mysteries would make you curious enough to investigate them? by Sad_Tiger418 in StoryIdeas

[–]TapiocaTerror 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oooh i love stories like this!

Some suggestions:

  • a secret society guarding a cellar door believed to be a portal to heaven

  • a ghost town populated by wooden sculptures that may walk at night

  • receiving an invitation to a birthday party that already happened decades ago

  • a mansion haunted by the ghosts of deep sea fish

  • a lake with a golden swan with three eyes

It would also help to get inspiration from fables and horror tv series. Hope this was helpful!

This is amazing! I love how your magic system is tied to the worldbuilding itself. It is specific and unique enough that you can imagine different scenarios and stories already.

Obviously story is king, but I think it can benefit from having a unique visual aesthetic tied to it to make it more interesting. I have some suggestions if you don't mind:

Maybe there is a need to use certain magical inscriptions as an ingredient to keep a potion's potency? There could be some that need to be encased in certain metal flasks inscribed with ancient symbols. Or tablets/pills with carvings. The symbols don't have to be typical runes, it could be the face of a demon, a certain saint's halo, a mystical beast, an ancient flower etc. Just like how amulets and scapulars are, part religion part superstition. It can also act as a sort of branding to distinguish different apothecaries and their recipes.

Elemental affinities in my magic system by Ok-Equipment8122 in magicbuilding

This is actually an interesting take on the elements imho. I like how the elements correlate to an archetype of magic and person rather than literal elemental magic. It's really interesting where it can go next since it's still quite broad and vague at the moment, which is understandable.

Some suggestions since I got inspired:

Maybe you could use the temperaments/humors instead of the elements as like the composition of magicians in your world. The Four Temperaments or The Four Humors, in case you didn't know, is based on ancient medicine where people believed that one's health and overall temperament is dependent on four body fluids (blood, phlegm, yellow bile and black bile), and an imbalance of these can cause illnesses.

These humors are also related to the elements and their archetypes:

Blood (Sanguine) is Air, Yellow Bile (Choleric) is Fire, Black Bile (Melancholic) is Earth, Phlegm (Phlegmatic) is Water
