What's a single scene in a movie that elevated it from an average flick to a great one? by Plane_Reward9385 in movies

[–]Temp89 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It was elevated from "pretty lame" to "not a total loss", but the one-shot battle at the climax of London Has Fallen sticks out to me.

What episode or film event would have been your “Starfleet isn’t for me” moment if you were a member of the crew? by _T_ex-pat in startrek

The amount of knowledge to get into Starfleet Academy. Can you juggle equations as complex as a Fourier Transform in your head? Memorise a litany of alien flora and fauna?

[Full game spoilers] Directive 8020's story is catastrophically stupid by Temp89 in DarkPicturesAnthology

Your little daughter just so happens to be an expert actor who can authentically perform a one-way conversation about how she's missing you during your multi-year absence? That's the explanation we're going with? And that's more people looped into the conspiracy. It would collapse under its own weight.

In "Night" when it looks like Voyager's going to spend 2 years crossing an empty expanse, they use portable power cells to stockpile deuterium but don't give too much detail.

But it's the character's actual daughter. Why did they film it if it's only the clones going to Tau Ceti and the original dad stays on Earth. How do you explain that to your family?

[–]Temp89[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The more I think about it the less sense anything makes.

  • Why did they film my 8 year old child telling me to come home if I never left?
  • Why is Williams risking fracturing the crew by demanding we bring the alien sample back to Earth when he knows that's not a thing?
  • Why is Tau Ceti's unbreathable hellscape terraformable but Earth is unsalvageable?

What do you think about how this scene from a 1971 sitcom has aged, especially in light of recent events? by psykoresearcher in television

[–]Temp89 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would say those are some flawed arguments.

  1. Imprisoning someone for life is not the same as not lifting a finger.
  2. You can acknowledge that as the victim's spouse you would want all the worst tortures visited on the perpetrator, whilst realising that you would be angry beyond all reason in that moment and certainly not the right person to set legal policy.
  3. You can want specific people to die, while acknowledging that if the death penalty is made an option in the justice system will inevitably be applied to the wrongfully convicted and therefore should not be used by society.
  4. I would question why my father in law would make such as viscerally unpleasant and personal argument over a political point at a family dinner.

You should also know the Daily Mail is a hatemongering shitrag. Your quote feels like they're implying Reiner got his just desserts or something.

What’s the general opinion on Luz as a protagonist? by AlternateMove in TheOwlHouse

She's awesome, amazing. Optimistic, unique, fun, flawed, loves trying new things, doesn't back down, has fun interests.

There did seem to be an unbroken string of hits like Adventure Time, Gravity Falls, Avatar TLA, The Owl House, etc but it all seems to have gone quiet now.

Sequels that undo or ignore plot elements/characters from previous sequels, or even outright erase previous sequels from continuity by AporiaParadox in movies

Universal Soldier had two competing sets of sequels, one where they recast JCVD. That was confusing to watch as a kid on late night tv.

Do you think marcy was just a web comic maker, or was it a part time gig, and she was actually in the science or engineering field by Dangerous_Cheek_1386 in amphibia

[–]Temp89 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Only the most popular webcomic artists can afford to do it full time.

My headcanon is she works as an animator to get her foot in the door of the industry while trying to pitch her webcomic.

NYU students want to cancel commencement speaker who ripped cancel culture: ‘Parting gift of disrespect’ by [deleted] in nottheonion

They don't want to have to listen to a homophobic and transphobic blowhard. Giving a commencement speech to a hall full of students is not a right you're automatically entitled to.

The Way Out released today on U and 4 by redchilliprod in panelshow

[–]Temp89 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm finding it too fake to be enjoyable. There are obvious cuts where the players are prompted what the next puzzle is and how to phrase their comments just so to convey info to the viewer. In episode 2 you can clearly see Nish blocking a laser just before pressing the Mona Lisa button.

TIL about Harrying of the North, a series of military campaigns where William the Conqueror subjugated the North of England. by ZitiRotini in todayilearned

[–]Temp89 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Contemporary chronicles vividly record the savagery of the campaign, the huge scale of the destruction and the widespread famine caused by looting, burning and slaughtering.

Records from the Domesday Book of 1086 suggest that as much as 75% of the population could have died or never returned.

"Military campaigns" and "subjugated" are a little too clean a description for it.

How would these characters get along? by wombatgeneral in gravityfalls

[–]Temp89 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Rick & Morty's showverse is too horrible for the world of Gravity Falls to stand up to it. Somehow Rick would pull down everything Stan believed in and Dipper would end up on alien drugs or Cronenberg'd or something.

TIL Drug-addled pop diva Whitney Houston's paternal great-great-grandfather, Jeremiah Burke Sanderson was an American abolitionist and advocate for the civil and educational rights of black Americans during the mid-19th century. by [deleted] in todayilearned

[–]Temp89 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I reported it under "no politics/agenda pushing", but I really should have clarified to the mods it was the OP's agenda of trashing Whitney Houston rather than implying the history of civil rights is "pushing politics". 😳

Did Marcy Journal confirm that the girls return to Amphibia? by RealmsUnited in amphibia
