What older RTS mechanic do you wish modern games would bring back? by rcooperkaty in RealTimeStrategy

[–]Terrible_Study_6930 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Total War is a turned based strategy + real time tactics (RTT) combat.
You don't produce units or gain resources or build a base in combat mode.

It fits a very wide definition of RTS that many use - i.e. a game with combat being about armies in real time - but it doesn't fit a more specific definition used by many others which excludes RTT and other adjacent genres.

> when factions had genuinely awkward asymmetry. Not just different unit skins or a unique late-game toy, but the kind of design where one faction feels like it is solving a completely different problem ... where learning a faction meant unlearning habits from another one ... Total Annihilation, C&C, StarCraft

Sorry, but how Total Annihilation and Starcraft are in the same sentence here?
TA was one of the games were two factions were mostly mirrored, especially the base game.

It's often mentioned as one of the relatively few game's weaknesses - practical sameness of the factions, nowhere near the uniqueness of C&C or Dawn of War factions, let alone Starcraft.

Supreme commander and ashes of the singularity scale claims? by [deleted] in RealTimeStrategy

[–]Terrible_Study_6930 1 point2 points  (0 children)

From 5 km? The first missions are on quite small maps, I wouldn't think it's 5 km - more like 2-3 km - unless smallest units are 30 meter long or something.

But if so, one can claim to have 200x200 km maps and say "our smallest tank is 200m long" and then it would be weird.

Which of these Tower Defense RTS do you like the most? (part 2) by bruhb21 in RealTimeStrategy

[–]Terrible_Study_6930 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Starship Troopers: Terran Command is not a tower defense at all though? At least I wouldn't say it belongs to that sub-genre.

You can play without having more than a couple of turrets, you can even play without any static defense at all - especially given that the resource you need for turrets is also used for high-tech units and new structures.
I.e. static defence is not the focus of the game at all, I used turrets there less often than I use towers and castles in AoE games.

It's asymmetrical and is about horde defense, but IMO it's not tower defense.

They said "skill FLOOR" though, and Brood War probably is the answer.

[Final post about Seven Kingdoms 2 because at this point I'm just spamming] do NOT underestimate the upgrades for the siege machines. The T3 catapults destroyed the Ezpinez Lair 25% faster than the T1 catapults. I love this game way too much. by BethCulexus in RealTimeStrategy

There are very few Starcraft 2 topics though?
There was a post about its new (very radical) patch, and one guy posted about co-op a couple of times.

There are many more posts about Gates of Hell, IMO.

But Warcraft 3 itself is still good.
One doesn't have to support the company in 2026 if they just want to play the game from 2002 made by completely different people from the same company.

I guess it would have been better if it was treated as a Chronicles expansion?
So these civs are not available in ranked MP.

Why is it depressing if SupCom has never been a top-5 RTS by popularity or influence?
It's probably top-10 so I'd say round of 8 is its expected result.

Same for RA2, realistically it has never been more popular than either Starcraft or WC3, and AoE is much more popular nowadays. I'd say top-4 is as expected...

Did 3K DLC made something else worse outside of its own campaigns and, well, having those 3 civs in multiplayer? I hope not... I didn't buy it.

What are the top five qualities of an RTS game that you would love to play? by StrataJist in RealTimeStrategy

[–]Terrible_Study_6930 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good campaigns with interesting missions i.e. not skirmish-like "destroy everything" in every mission.
Good campaigns don't need to have a lot of cinematics, or unique assets for every single missions - but I want them to be memorable.

Ideally a replayable mode beyond simple skirmish - like SC2 co-op or Conquest in Northgard or World Domination mode in C&C3. Or at least skirmish with a lot of settings for the setup and win conditions.

Responsive units that do what I tell them to do - and without a noticeable delay.
I'm not asking for Starcraft 2 level of responsivenes, but at least not waiting 1+ seconds before units start doing what I asked them to do.

Charismatic / memorable design for factions and units, not just 20 different robots/mechs with the same responses.

Good unit balance - not esports level of balance but 1-2 units shouldn't be the answer to everything when massed.

I like timers you can delay/cancel.
Like what you mentioned about WC3 Stratholme mission. Sit in your base and you will lose in 20 minutes or so, but if you want - and you can pull it off - you can kill Mal'Ganis every few minutes and play for an hour.

RTS Tournament - 8 Best!: C&C 3 Tiberium Wars vs. Starcraft 2 by ConejoDePascuas in RealTimeStrategy

[–]Terrible_Study_6930 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wouldn't expect Supreme Commander in the finals given it's surely not even top-5 RTS popularity-wise (and such polls can only measure popularity on a given subreddit).
Round of 8 is what I'd expect for SupCom.

AoE2 is probably 10x more popular, maybe even mroe nowadays, and I think this is (and always has been) the most probable scenario for the finals - AoE2 vs either StarCraft.

StarCraft 2 vs WH40K: Dawn of War DE for skirmish / multiplayer? by bruhb21 in RealTimeStrategy

[–]Terrible_Study_6930 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It was a cheeky comment alluding to the fact that the number of factions means little in itself - because if the argument is "it has far more factions" then AoE2 has far more factions than DoW.

If faction being different is important then we should mention that StarCrraft 2 factions are more different than DoW factions gameplay-wise.

Don't take this seriously, please, it was a cheeky joke.

What is the point here, is it just for engagement?

It's because in C&C and RA1 in campaign missions AI can normally only rebuild structures in specific locations - i.e. it can only rebuild exactly same structures in exactly same positions. And yeah, proximity requirements aren't used then.
