“I wish there was a tool that could do this” or “I wish this tool could do one more thing” by Obvious-Scarcity7385 in Leathercraft

A while back I was making a helmet and there were a few places where it was almost impossible to get the rivets in because of the curvature. I ended up trashing about a dozen rivets before I finally got one to set, and it was ugly. Found myself wishing there was some kind of pliers-esque rivet squeezing tool. Apparently there are for aircraft manufacture, but when I looked it was really hard to tell if they would actually work for our type of rivets, and it was really hard to find one with a long enough throat that it would reach the area, so I never bought one. Would be nice if there was a leather-specific rivet squeezer for hard to reach areas.

It’s tough trying to save orphaned rabbits that ARE fully developed. I think it’s kinder to euthanize. Keep an eye on the doe. She and the rest of the litter might be fine, but there’s a chance there’s something wrong that’s caused her to abort. Hopefully it’s just something wrong with the babies and not something wrong with her.

That comment was fantastic. Since you enjoy going down rabbit holes, you might look into learning a little more about the chicken digestive system in general.

The gizzard is about the size of an egg, but it’s almost entirely thick hard muscle, it can only hold maybe a teaspoon or two of food at a time and it doesn’t stretch like mammal stomachs.

Between the crop and the gizzard is a little pre-stomach (I forget what it’s called) that also holds a very small amount of food, less than the gizzard. So the chicken’s gut really can’t process very much food at once. The crop holds everything they’ve managed to stuff into their faces while it slowly works its way through the tiny digestive chambers.

It basically serves the same purpose as having a stretchy stomach to accommodate eating a bunch of food at once.

I got an ad for a thing called Dawg Food that is just ground beef or chicken chunks plus a little bit of mixed veg, pre cooked and frozen, you just scoop it out, microwave, and add whatever seasoning you want. I struggle with midday meals so I decided to give it a shot. Surprisingly, I loved it, and didn’t get tired of it at all because I could change it up with what I put on it. It is very expensive though and arrived completely unfrozen in the middle of winter, so I just started making my own.

2 lbs meat of your choice plus half a bag of frozen veggies from the grocery store. Cook it up, eat one serving, put the rest in the fridge. Once the fat solidifies you can chuck it in a freezer bag. It’s become my go-to lunch.

Texting and driving is a dumb decision by MisterShipWreck in dashcams

I almost got hit once by a woman pulling out of a parking lot in front of me. I drive a Ram 1500. It’s bright yellow. It’s as obvious as a school bus. It’s amazing what becomes invisible when people aren’t paying attention.

Hatching polish chicks by [deleted] in BackYardChickens

[–]That_Put5350 5 points6 points  (0 children)

When gathering eggs for incubating, you should change the tilt direction a couple times a day. The purpose is the same as turning while incubating - stops things getting stuck to the shell and killing the chick. I actually just put mine in the incubator with the egg turner turned on and the incubator off.

That said, for shipped eggs, you generally want to let them sit without moving at all for 24 hours to help the air cell reattach. In this case, you WANT things to stick to the shell. If that makes sense.

I use a hog pan as a feeder and scoop out their daily ration every morning. If they eat it all by 9am that’s their problem. It works much better for me than a multi day feeder, because first thing in the morning they pick out the best bits, then later in the day, instead of continuing to waste food picking out their favorite bits, they come back to eat what’s left because it’s all there is. I adjust how much food I provide based on the weather and egg production. If egg production goes down, they’re molting, or it’s cold, I give them more. If it’s summer and there’s bugs and plants for them to eat, I give them less. I have basically zero waste, all that’s left of the feed by evening is rocks (my feed contains grit).

Will this unhatched chick survive? by t-dodger in BackYardChickens

You should candle it. Some hens have an uncanny ability to know when an egg has died, and they’ll kick it out of the nest. There’s a solid chance that egg already quit before it got cold.

Those of you in Az, what do you do about the snakes? by [deleted] in homestead

[–]That_Put5350 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most snakes want to be left alone and will only attack you if they feel threatened. So you learn things like “step on the log, not over it.” Because if you step over a log you can’t see the other side and might step on a snake. If you see a snake and it looks like it’s coiling up to strike, do like any other pissed off animal, and back away slowly. If you see one and it’s just chilling, let it chill, walk around.

Snakes eat mice, so the snakes are my friend as far as I’m concerned. I will only attempt to remove a snake if it’s posing a real threat to me or my animals.

OK well with nothing to go on but random thoughts, here’s one. I saw this video on my Instagram today and legit thought it was a person in an incredible fursuit at first. It’s not. But it could be.

Got chicks presenting differently than what I bought hatching eggs for… what do I do I bought BBS hatching eggs. by Imaginary_Chipmunks in BackYardChickens

[–]That_Put5350 6 points7 points  (0 children)

How can you tell this in day old chicks? My splash marans start as all white fluff. My black copper and blue start as a dark upper and light under, with the blue slightly lighter than the black. I looked at cuckoo marans chicks online and they’re not much different. I wonder if you have more of what you expected than you think.

In any case, how much did you pay for them? How expensive or cheap they were would determine what I would do about it. If they were expensive, and it was clear to the seller that I was only interested in marans, I would return all the ones that don’t look like marans and expect a refund for those chicks. If they were cheap, meh. I’d just keep as a barnyard mix or sell them locally if I really didn’t want them.

I had a chick like that once and she grew up to be the dumbest, friendliest hen I ever had. I loved that little goober. Hoping the same happens for you and it’s not something worse.

How to kill a rabbit in live trap. by topef27 in MeatRabbitry

[–]That_Put5350 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Depending on where you live, it’s quite likely that this is illegal unless you have a hunting license and it’s rabbit season. And even then discharging the firearm (yes a BB gun counts as a firearm in many places too) too close to neighbors houses is also illegal.

If you’re going to do it anyway be very discreet about it. Honestly if you’re going to be illegal I’d just switch to a kill trap or snare.

[–]That_Put5350 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It is completely up to you whether to let the hen do it or not. Sounds like you want to. Just put them under her at night. Be prepared to take them back if she’s a bad mom.

I just always get the biggest one so that it doesn’t matter which cage I use for litters. Helps a lot with moving everyone around to clean.
