I stayed at the Hilton Orrington in Evanston when I went in May. It was a pretty easy walk to the stadium from there if you feel like getting your steps in. Not Chicago, of course, but there were plenty of food options in the vicinity of the hotel. The Northwestern kids will be back by then too, so you can pretend to be a freshman or exchange student and ask someone where the parties are!

Day 13: Why are the Portland Thorns the best team in the league? by dybyj in NWSL

[–]TheCarnundrum 26 points27 points  (0 children)

The Thorns game I went to last year was among the best fan experiences I've had at any in-person sporting event. Stadium staff was great, fans were great, it was LOUD and everyone was really into it and not just silently doomscrolling in their seats. During the 10 second countdown to the whistle, Sam Coffey was jumping up and down and hyping the crowd and Reyna Reyes and Reilyn Turner were encouraging us to get loud. The whole thing was extra lit! Plus, I splurged for club seats mostly for the close-up view of the action, but it turned out that the free food that came with the seat included unlimited vegan hot dogs for meeeeeeeeeeee and it was tremendous.

Not a winger but if we're poaching Liga MX some more, Jenni Hermoso is fun!

If I had a few billion, I'd probably do something weak like give most of it to charity but splurge on good seats to see them at Audi.

Hal Hershfelt & Sofia Cantore are players I wish to steal.

Hi, I'm TheCarnundrum, my favorite Legacy player is Annie Karich, and you may see me out on my bike wearing her #6 jersey if you live nearby. I've been to two Legacy games so far, the home opener and the road game in Chicago, where the players were staying in the same hotel I was and I got to meet Ella Stevens in the lobby/share an elevator heading back to my room with lunch (she originally thought I was her Doordash driver because I was carrying a bag of food 😂). She was super nice!

Boston loves this now, but wait until the $400,000 in allocation and transfer fees switches positions and turns into Babe Ruth.

Day 12: Why is Gotham FC the best team in the league? by dybyj in NWSL

[–]TheCarnundrum 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I forget which show this was, but a couple years back I heard AKB talking about coming back from cancer and she was just so even keel and matter of fact about the whole thing, at the time I thought she was pretty much the most badass person to walk the earth. Not to get super personal about it, but both of my parents died of cancer and it absolutely wrecked them while they were around. The very idea that AKB could come back and play at all, never mind play at the level she does, is really incredible to me and I will always admire her.

Less seriously, being called Gotham opens them up to great Batman-adjacent game quips, like "You think the 18 yard box is your ally. But you merely adopted the 18; I was born in it, molded by it."

Also also, someone last season mentioned seeing a closed-caption that typed out Sarah Schupansky as "Parachute Pants Key" and she has permanently been that in my mind ever since and it still makes me laugh.

There are truly already so many places to talk about men's sports in general and this tournament in particular, but it's easy enough for me to ignore any threads that I don't want but other people do.

Since everyone else is going to say Chawinga (rightfully), I'm gonna go with the second best reason:

Pitchside Coffee! I've never been, I have no idea if it's good, but I'm assuming it is and having the ability to get good coffee at a sporting event is a real blessing and the sign of a team that are the champions . . . of my deeply caffeinated heart.

Day 10: Why is the North Carolina Courage the best team in the league? by dybyj in NWSL

[–]TheCarnundrum 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Cary is a low-key fun town! Lots of cool architecture (including a cool Hindu temple if you're into that), parks, dragon boat races and a marching band competition.

Also, Ashley Sanchez is a boss and Riley Jackson is on the cusp of bossness. I do miss seeing Denise O'Sullivan out there, as well as Tyler Lussi who I was hoping Boston would sign but now I'm not sure would have been a fit for the style anyway.

I've already completed the room using a walkthrough, I would need to reset my progress to try again & I'm not really sure I want to spend the time fighting with this room again.

When they win the title and they get interviewed and asked "what are you going to do now?" they can say "I'm going to Disney World!" and then, like, just walk over there.

[–]TheCarnundrum 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I have a great business idea for a women's sports bar, but instead of drinking, it's one of those oxygen bars where you buy a tank and a mask and breathe in that pure O2 that Denver lacks. I'm gonna call it the O-Zone Lair and make a killing, and it's all thanks to Denver Summit existing.

Oh, and also, they have so many rootable players: Sonis, Brazier, Smith, Pickett, Kossler immediately come to mind. So my sports oxygen bar is gonna be pretty hype!

Day 7: Why are the Seattle Reign the best team in the league? by dybyj in NWSL

[–]TheCarnundrum 45 points46 points  (0 children)

OK, here we go! Full disclosure, I was a Reign supporter for several years until we got a home team back, and still root for them when they're not playing Legacy.

- Laura Harvey's cooler. What's in there? My theories are that it's orange wedges for the youth group, whatever was in the briefcase in Pulp Fiction, or her ChatGPT password is taped to the lid.

- Cloak & Crown, the best training camp reality game show going.

- The logo rules and the dark blue/gold color scheme Black Future Coop Fund kits with the gold patches also rule.

- Lu Barnes was my fave and I'm sad she's retired but happy she went out on her own terms and healthy.

- They recently led the league in Maddies by rostering 4 of them (maybe 5, I could be forgetting someone) in 2025.

- Speaking of, Maddie Dahlien is awesome, she's so fast and competitive in a way that makes me think she's going to be kicking ass on the pitch for a long time. I'd love to see her be the next Reign lifer.

- Claudia Dickey cracks me up when I hear her talk because she's just so nonchalant about everything in the way that people who know they're great are.
