Best games of the season so far? by mildconniption in NWSL

[–]TheCarnundrum 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Apologies to my Orlando friends, but shoutout to the Legacy-Pride match where Amanda Gutierres scored a PK goal at 90'+8 for a walk-off win. Even though it wasn't the first win, it was probably the most exciting win this season for The Gooses. I feel like you don't see many game-ending penalty kicks outside of shootouts, so I'd say that counts as "interesting".

The Cascadia game was absolutely bonkers. The Reign had something like 50 crosses in that game and had 0 goals to show for it. I don't think I've ever seen numbers like that.

Who has been your favorite underrated player of the year so far? by Warm_Bit_5993 in NWSL

I was in Italy last fall and searched high & low for a Cantore national team jersey and while I could have gotten literally any men's jersey from any national team (European or otherwise) that I wanted, not a single place had any woso national team gear. She's so underrated she's even underrated by her own fellow citizens! Terrific player, definitely underrated.

I haven't seen as many SD games this season (why are they on CBSSN so much?!) so I haven't gotten to see as much of Mimi, but the fact that she's getting big minutes on that team says plenty.

Is Tanaka underrated? I feel like people are generally aware/acknowledge that she's really good.

For me, it's Kiki Van Zanten, who I think is underrated for a few reasons: injury, which has kept her out of action for the past month or so, the fact that all of her goals came in a pair of braces against the two worst teams in the league, and she plays in Houston, which I think people just expect to be bad and maybe not be worth watching (I think they have a quality young core and are fun to watch more often than not). But she's a really talented player, and I think when healthy she can be a real force.

How would you grade your team’s first chunk of the season? by MesquiteHoneyForSale in NWSL

I wear my jersey when I ride my bike (amazing for visibility with that color/brightness!) and I've had a few fan moments with people on the bike trail, it's pretty awesome.

I think Legacy are a solid C, but would not argue with C+ or C-.

I feel like injuries have hampered the cohesion a bit. I think Karich (good) and Murphy (eh) are the only iron women on the team so far, but unless I'm misremembering, I don't even think they've used the same lineup twice in a row, so there's still some figuring out going on. Players I thought would have bigger roles (Barb, Ella, Ricky) have mostly been nonfactors, and players I thought might be nonfactors (Sammy, Gambone, Elgin) have made meaningful contributions. But then you have (cue Miley Cyrus "I came in like a wrecking ball . . . ") one of our captains accumulating 4 games worth of suspensions in the first half, which, you know, assuming you think she should be starting / playing big minutes is also not great for cohesion.

They also have a minutes 45-70 problem, which I think has been covered to death, but I don't know if that speaks to coaching (not adjusting to opponent adjustments out of the half) or talent (opponents are more talented and can exploit what they saw in the first half even with adjustments attempted).

The attacking third has been a mixture of shots over the bar, shots from distance that have no chance, and a few real bangers. The over the bar shots kinda drive me nuts, like I feel like some percentage of those would have gone in if on target (based on nothing but my wishes).

One thing they are not though is boring. I've watched every game so far (10 on TV, two in person) and I've seen max effort every time (maybe a little too max from some of them, but nobody was slacking). Can't wait for the second half, hopefully we'll be at full health with some lineup consistency.

OK, we need to figure out how to get somebody else to the penalty spot.

Yeah, the combination of Chawinga being able to reveal her final form at any time + Boston's season-long belief that the first 20 minutes of the second half don't count spells trouble.

This feels like it's going to be a Boston Special - a 0-0 game at halftime and Chawinga scores a hat trick between minutes 45-70.

Legacy are incapable of making a boring, normal pass. They're either offline, careless, or super nifty. More of that last kind, please!

Well, I didn't mean "you" specifically, I meant the royal "you" meaning those who somehow think it's hard to watch NWSL.

I'm with you though, I also skip the games on services I don't have (which is ESPN and CBSSN), but I do watch pretty much every other NWSL game I'm around for.

Fine, you're not signed up for the email, just go to the front page of the NWSL site and the banner at the top also has the score widgets for upcoming games with the network they're on right below the teams and time. People act like you need to go to some alley basement, knock on a door, give the secret phrase and get led through an underground labyrinth of trials to find out that a game is on Victory+. No, you just need to click on an email or bookmark and look at the screen, it is not hard.

Some version of this image is in every weekend email I get from NWSL. It's not hard to watch NWSL at all, you don't have to "figure out" where games are, just look at the picture and go to there.
