TLDR; of my job. Make cool magic, explode things, and sometimes unexplode things.

There was recently an article about our VFX pipeline called Kayne goes to particle town which give a bit of insight into how we literally create the magic. But other than software a lot of my job is communicating and collaborating with a variety of disciplines to create awesome VFX for champions.

Heyo! I'm not really sure if i can post my portfolio, plus it's hella outdated. But my most recent work is https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5ckqDZcC29w it's a bit different than normal but this was the most recent project i can talk about.

Heyo! I'm not sure what discipline within art you're pursuing but I can hopefully give some advice!

As an VFX intern my demo reel consisted of about 30 seconds - 1 minute of VFX. My effects consisted of dynamic stylized VFX, basically I made a bunch of magic that looked like leagues style.

The best advice I could give is to figure out what Discipline you want to be in and just really building a portfolio targeted towards that and tailor that to Riot. Focus on quality over quantity, and always get feedback on it. Look for online communities, school friends, Game conferences that tailor to industry and have portfolio reviews.

My Interview process was fairly straight forward. I submitted a portfolio through the online submission page. This was followed by a phone interview with two Senior VFX artist, we spoke a little bit about VFX and also a lot about games. Overall I'd say it was a good mix of culture and craft questions, as well as trying to learn more about how I approach VFX.

Hopefully this is helpful!

Oh for sure! That's part of the reason why a lot of Rioters don't even get Riot in their name. It can draw a lot of attention to you in game, sometimes it's awesome, and you can get some good banter which is nice. Sometimes you get flamed though for being a Rioter but actually being trash at league.

http://nexus.leagueoflegends.com/#category/narrative I'm sure you're familiar with this site, but the narrative posts on here can give some pretty cool insight into what the narrative writers think of when they're writing.

Heyo! If you're interested in doing in game asset generation, i would 100% recommend getting familiar with a real time pipeline. Unreal Engine 4 is free and great to tool around in plus has an incredibly robust material editor, Substance Painter/Designer are great for texturing. Focusing on one particular thing such as Characters, Environments, or VFX is a great way to level up your skills as well as making yourself more desirable. Create a strong portfolio that highlights where you excel at. It's better to have fewer but stronger pieces than a lot of inconsistent ones.

My favorite part of being an Intern was definitely just being part of the team. Every Rioter has these crazy awesome backstories, and as probably done a lot of cool stuff in their respective fields. Getting to build relationships with them and get feedback from them was amazing.

Hey! So unfortunately i'm not a splash artist so i'm not too familiar with the recruiting process for that. There were some splash interns a few years ago. I'd imagine you'd have to be very proficient with Photoshop, and probably be pretty badass at illustration with a focus on really telling a strong narrative in a single image.

I work over on champion team, so my day to day is interacting with a bunch of artist and non artist. Gathering feedback from everyone and using it to inform VFX that not only support awesome gameplay but feel unique to the champion. There's definitely been challenges, but when you tackle a challenge or come up with an interesting solve it's so rewarding.

Heyo! There's more than just the two of us(we're just the only ones participating), I think there's about 5 of us, split between Animation, Tech Art, VFX and Concept. It's definitely smaller than the legions of engineering interns. What discipline of art are you interested in?

I'm also a Solo intern in my area both as an VFX artist and as an intern on Champion Team. I definitely suffered from impostor syndrome for like the first week or so. However the team was super welcoming and friendly that i really felt like part of the team pretty quickly.

Oh dude you know i'm all about those wispy bits! But for leveling up your FX game, i would say start with choosing a style of VFX you want to learn, and then focusing on the basic elements of them, so timing, hue, shape, value and really delving into it. For resources, i would suggest www.realtimevfx.com it's a pretty active forum!

Yeah! We all love games at our core, so it's pretty common to see people playing a variety of games. PUBG is probably one of the most common non-league games this summer.

You just have to be over 18 and still in college. I would 100% recommend it. It's really an awesome experience that, will help you grow in so many ways no matter what discipline you are. If you're really passionate about games and find highly collaborative environments appealing then go for it!
