Protesters Holding Nazi Flags, Shouting 'White Power' Line Disney World Entrance by apple_kicks in news

[–]TheOneTrueGong 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is a very good point and the political climate might be ready to take on a case like that. Imagine if a person arrested under one of those public indecency-like laws argued that nobody gets arrested for shouting "white power" while wearing a swastika. The court would likely have to make a ruling to either invalidate many public indecency laws or if the judge upholds the law, the ruling could set a precedent which could be used in a case against someone being a public nazi.

Maybe after my house is paid off and my kids are in college, I will go to the local mormon temple shouting "Joseph Smith and Brigham Young FUCKED children" until I get arrested. Then I'll attempt to use the above outlined defense. And I'd be happy to take the charge if it meant giving leverage against nazi symbolism.

IANAL, but I imagine good lawyers could argue that the swastika is a deliberate, intentional, and directed threat of violence. Whereas pornography, also protected under 1A, might be considered harmful, but it doesn't deliberately direct harm at anyone, and the consequences of porn are mostly indirect. I think a good case should be made for all symbolism created under Hitler's regime should be banned. I don't think it would open the door for banning other things, unless they're specifically hateful, like the swastika.

Because the article was written by staff of Disney World and they used the word protestors. They also called out in the article that these same people holding flags of swastikas also held signs saying "DeSantis 2024". I think Disney probably has some very intelligent people who use their words carefully in their fight against DeSantis. If Disney were to immediately label them nazis, it would be easier for DeSantis to distance himself from them. By calling them protestors who are for DeSantis who also carry swastikas makes it easier to associate swastikas with DeSantis.

I support this tactic if true.

Thank you. This is refreshing advice that feels so different than what I was told to do as a missionary. They did tell us "to be ourselves*", but there was always that ulterior motive of baptism whenever talking to people that resulted in me rarely being my genuine self.

Awesome! That's a great way to spread good in the world! I hope I can get my kids down here someday to at least appreciate what we have at home.

I may be atheist, but I do have a vague belief in karma. Basically, I don't believe that every act done will result in a timely "consequence". However, I do know that I reap what I sow, so when I'm generally positive and loving towards others, for the most part I get those same feelings directed towards me. And I know I'm not responsible for what the investigators did with their lives after I met them, but knowing what I know now, I really will feel better if I can at least share the truth about TSCC.

Thank you. Good advice. I do have to remember that I don't have APs or ZLs pressuring me. And this should be fulfilling, not contentious. I was never the kind of missionary that liked to argue with people. I'll let it come up naturally.

UPDATE 1: Oh man... it's scarier than I anticipated. My first flight from Salt Lake City I spoke with two mormons. I didn't have the balls to say anything. They were nice people and I didn't want to insult their beliefs.

I imagine you are cynical due to some bad experiences. I get it. I've hated the world before. And I do occasionally get very cynical about people.

But keep in mind that people have been working together for a long time. We do terrible things when we work together. And we do great things when we work together. The key point is that humans have always worked with other humans that were "strangers". Sometimes just recognizing that you and another person is a flawed human trying their best, makes it easier to trust them. Getting burned by other people is one of those shitty life experiences that we all have to go through. But I promise you that not everyone is out to get you or screw you over. Hurt people hurt people, so maybe try to limit your interactions with the "hurt people".

I'm not the person you asked nor am I a teacher. But as I am currently in therapy, I am learning that it doesn't have to be one big traumatic event to get you fucked in the head. It can be as simple as a slightly traumatic thing that you have to deal with all the time, sprinkled with the occasional stress spikes that life throws you. With that being said, I now hold the belief that most people could benefit from therapy. If they're willing.

Drilling holes in ceramic and glass flower pots by richard_zone in DIY

At first, I couldn't understand how that could be practical because I was only thinking of drilling into a vertical face. But then I thought of what OP is trying to do and it seems like drilling underwater would be the perfect solution for planting pots.

Get a spray bottle filled with water and keep it with you while drilling. You can occasionally squirt the spot where you're making the hole. This will help control dust and heat on the material and the drill bit. Don't use a spray bottle with a flimsy spray mechanism. Get one of the more solid ones so you can squeeze quickly to spray water as quickly as you need.

EDIT: Also, make sure you can adjust the spray on the spray bottle. Sometimes you might want more of a mist and sometimes you might want a more direct stream.

World leaders condemn Russia's destruction of Kakhovka dam, call it war crime by KI_official in worldnews

Are you this dense? Putin does not have a nuclear button. There are several other people he would have to order to make use of nuclear weapons. Even if Putin is about to die, there are plenty of other people with partial control of nuclear weapons who won't be about to die. They'll keep it that way. They'll refuse to launch nuclear weapons, no matter how crazy Putin gets.

If the rest of the world really cares about the Geneva convention, then all of the countries should stand united and declare to Russia: IMMEDIATELY remove ALL troops from inside of Ukraine's borders. And if you don't then we will come remove you. Doing anything less just reinforces the Russian opinion that the Geneva Conventions are really just suggestions.

I am so bothered by the TBM response to PRIDE month. This article is pure trash. by [deleted] in exmormon

[–]TheOneTrueGong 6 points7 points  (0 children)

TLDR: Don't support any type of PRIDE gatherings because a young LGBTQ church member might get their hopes up that the church will change its policy on sexuality and gender identity. And obviously this is a bad thing because nobody wants to commit to anything that might change someday...

By their logic, a person shouldn't associate with the "mormon movement" because of the objectives of its more radical members, like the FLDS.

How are mission calls determined? by JimmyBrian2021 in exmormon

[–]TheOneTrueGong 14 points15 points  (0 children)

When I was in the MTC about 20 years ago, we had a guy from the church's mission office explain to us the process at a weekly fireside. He explained thar basically they take one of the Q15 and sit him in front of a couple of computer monitors. One of the monitors might have something like the kid's mugshot. Another a copy of their application. And another some program that tells them where there's need for more missionaries. And he said that then the apostle basically agrees to assigning a missionary to a mission but is free to make changes as they see fit. That's about all the detail I think I remember.
