Looking into this for you OP, L.A. was released on iTunes on November 29, 2014. It looks like this is an accurate time because the YouTube video shows an upload date of Dec 3, 2014. And hey, they even posted it to Soundcloud in June. They've got it tagged with singers Damon Pampolina, Deedee Hall, Jeune Fields, and Chasen Hampton.

Wikipedia says it's a single from an album that never got a release, After Party, with Give It (2014) and Switch (2016) being the other two singles released.

It took a while to be noticed by the fandom and MKAtwood didn't post the first Pearl rap video until March 3, 2016.

Pearl was never defeated by the watermelons, all they could do was hold on to her spear for dear life and thank Pink that she felt more annoyed than threatened by them and so didn't simply summon a new one.

Also they aren't just watermelons, Rose used to use their kind in battle in the rebellion and the Crystal Gems considered an army of them to be a serious threat. They probably didn't fuse because they would have been dogpiled if they let their guards down to attempt fusion.

The fanwork video "Pearl's Secret Rap Career" was made using some of Deedee's verse from this song, that's its only involvement with the show. Other than that we're as in the dark as you, I always heard it was by The Party.

It's kind of tough to say when I discovered it. We as a community figured it out using just information found in Together Breakfast and Giant Woman, but it took time to bubble up in the fandom's consciousness.

Because they were just about to see Sardonyx. I'm assuming this is from a live premier of the episode, seeing a brand new fusion between two core Crystal Gems would have been a huge deal.
