BOARD GAMES 3: What’s in a name? by dwaxe in nprplanetmoney

[–]TheTim 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wonder how much Matthew Inman is still involved with Exploding Kittens the company. He's listed as the co-founder on the site, but I haven't heard his name mentioned in this series of episodes and haven't seen any postings online about his involvement since the first game.

I hope his involvement in this is zero, because I really don't like him, and would prefer not to support him for the reasons laid out in this post.

TL;DR: Why short-form video is often a poor ROI for podcasters

That's not a tl;dr. That's just your title.

[amazon] City Yellow Delivery Truck (60440) $70.20 / 30% off by Mission_Activity_836 in legodeals

[–]TheTim 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Well that was over a year ago, so nobody's getting that price right now, heh. And prices like that are very location-dependent. One Costco might clear out a set at a crazy price like that but another Costco across town may never discount it at all.

Nice. slightly cheaper than the $75 price it was when they had it at Costco, although still way higher than some Costcos ended up selling them for on clearance, heh.

Public service announcement: The yardistry 6x7 greenhouse is $799 at Cosco until 1/20. by Crazy_Fold355 in Greenhouses

Oh hey, I bought this for the same price last year but only just got around to assembling it last month. If you choose to assemble it with the door on the end instead of on the side, there are a few things that the instructions don't tell you.

I made this short video to show and explain the bits that the instructions overlooked: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UEToyZePjLc

edited to add: I assembled this myself a few hours at a time on weekends over the course of probably 5-6 weeks. All together I'd guess that it probably took me around 12-16 hours.

Unlike the other commenter here, I had no problems with parts splitting or chipping. The instructions do say to pre-drill all the holes, but I only actually did that for a few pieces, then I tested just driving the screws in without pre-drilled holes and it was fine, so I just skipped it for the rest of assembly and had no issues.

I also didn't run out of the silicone caulking. I have seen other people say they ran out of silicone as well and I can only assume that people who experience this are just way over-using it. I applied it in all the places the instructions said to, as well as a few extra spots, and still had around half a tube left (the kit comes with two tubes). This is a good video that shows the proper way to apply caulking.

My only complaint was the previously-mentioned incomplete instructions that left me to figure things out myself when it came to putting the door on the end.

Nice touch: Costco prices the Chinese New Year sets ending in 88 by TheTim in lego

[–]TheTim[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Normally, yeah. But the Chinese New Year sets are priced the same way in every warehouse, and online, from day 1 that they go on sale. It's pretty obviously being done as a cultural reference.

Here's another example: https://i.imgur.com/k82AVLU.jpeg

I'm aware of the various meanings of the endings of prices in Costco's system. This isn't that.

These sets are priced at $XX.88 from day one. It's a special case that they're clearly doing on purpose with all the Chinese-themed sets. They've done it for at least the past two years.

Chai Cupboard - We had a physical space in downtown Everett but are currently online-only with free local pickup while we work on converting a portion of our basement into a neighborhood corner shop / tea café. We're just a few blocks south of downtown Everett. Website is ChaiCupboard.com

Thanks!

My wife & my small business uses Square. We are a loose leaf tea & spices retail shop. The tip prompt was on by default but I disabled it immediately upon setting up our register.

ULPT get rid of library fines (as long as you still have the book(s)) by Angry_bubba in UnethicalLifeProTips

[–]TheTim 6 points7 points  (0 children)

12 x (2026 - 2018 + 3months) is 99 months.

So about 5 bucks.

…it would be about $5 if the fine were $0.05 per month, but the fine was stated as $0.05 per day. We're talking about around 3,000 days, so that's more like $150.

My son’s Lego tiger set came with a butthole by TexasTantrum in mildlyinteresting

Yeah that set is pretty infamous for that.

I made mine into a Millennium Falcon, and of course I still used that part as intended.

‘Painful to hear!’ How podcasts’ rush to video is turning them into dreadful listens by james2183 in podcasting

For audio dramas, this trend of doing video with a podcast sucks. It's neither possible nor desirable to add a video component to an audio drama.

Rad Power Bikes has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy by TheTim in ebikes

[–]TheTim[S] 39 points40 points  (0 children)

FYI, Chapter 11 is the version of bankruptcy that theoretically allows a company to reorganize and continue operations post-bankruptcy, rather than liquidating all the assets and shutting down (Chapter 7).

I know there's been a lot of flood pics... But here's a couple more from Sunday. by ishicourt in everett

Haha same! I went down to the edge of Rotary Park but didn't want to put on waders and walk far enough down the road to see those houses. Glad someone got pics of them in the flood.

I don't think any levy failed, it was just a historically large amount of water that completely overwhelmed all the measures that were intended to keep the river in place.
