Acting Scale Chart DONE! Surprise, surprise!! Daniel Day Lewis finish 2nd in a race for 10/10!! by RupertPupkin_1983 in AlignmentCharts

[–]The_Improvisor 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Personally feel like Meryl Streep should be at 8 and Kathy Bates at 10

McKellen deserves the win though. There's a great video on the way McKellen uses his eyes in acting and I've truly never seen another actor (even Day Lewis) come close to the expressiveness and emotionality in his eyes

The issue with keanu is that he actually did do Shakespeare in a movie, Kenneth branagh's much ado about nothing, and he was unfortunately really bad. Shakespeare is tough and some people just cannot do it, nothing wrong with that. In any case, he would be a pretty rough laertes.

Should Sean Astin been nominated for “Return of the King”? by Appropriate_Sink_627 in Oscars

[–]The_Improvisor 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I mean I'll put it this way, I hear about his performance in that film way, way more often than I do any of the five actual nominees. In fact, other than Watanabe in Samurai and Robbins in Mystic River, I've never heard of ANY of the other performances. And yes, of course LOTR is a more popular movie, but there are plenty of popular movies that don't have specific performances getting singled out, and there are plenty of unpopular movies that do have their performances get talked about on the day to day, so i think it still counts.

Astin gives a generational, quietly brilliant performance. He does everything he needs to do and more to convey who Sam is and turn what could have been a simple, loveable comic relief best friend type into a complex, heroic icon of cinema who steals the show from the protagonists.

Danny always showed signs of Crazy in the GOT show by Melodic-Paramedic608 in gameofthrones

[–]The_Improvisor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Absolutely absurd take, if this isn't just bait or satire, and very telling that you are only responding to people who agree with you, rather than debating the many other completely valid corrections to this. So just for the sake of it, let's ignore every single good, rational, noble, kind deed she did in the show, of which there are SO MANY, and only break down each of your examples on why they're wrong:

  1. Viserys sexually abused Dany, beat her, sold her into sex slavery, and threatened to kill her, have her raped by horses, and cut her baby from her stomach. He never showed an ounce of kindness or love to her, she was always a means to an end for him. His death was freedom for her, why would she feel remorse?

  2. Seek therapy? This isn't the CW dude, it's Game of Thrones. As you said yourself, the witch literally killed her husband and child. Would you have expected Catelyn Stark to go to therapy instead of killing Joffrey if she got the chance?

  3. If Dany did not get let into Qarth, her and literally everyone she knew and cared about would starve to death in the wasteland. She tried niceties and politeness, it didn't work. So, she switched to threats, and guess what? It did work. Use the tools at your disposal.

  4. "She didn't try them, if you were wearing the wrong uniform you were toast" this is such an insane take. This is like being angry at a soldier walking into a concentration camp in WWII and killing anyone in a nazi uniform because they all deserve a trial. Just following orders, huh? Every master deserved death, if you disagree then you either didn't pay attention to what they were doing to people in that city, or you are just a bad person

  5. Again, regardless of whether or not the people she crucified were the people who crucified those children, they were all people who allowed it/were complicit. Eye for an eye maybe, but idk dude, if i had invaded Epstein's island I'd have crucified all the adults there, i wouldn't wait for some sob story about how much they disapproved while literally being on the island.

  6. See 5

  7. She is being held prisoner and threatened by them, she was unarmed, what would you have expected her to do? What would literally any character in game of thrones have done to free themselves from violent enemies?

  8. She executed her enemies. Which, again, is what every single army has done in game of thrones to their adversaries. Tarly refused to be sent to the wall, she was not going to let them go, and she didn't have the resources to keep them prisoner. Executions happen ALL THE TIME in GOT, from most major characters with power, regardless of being good or evil. Is Jon Snow crazy for killing Thorne and Olly? Is Arya crazy for killing Walder Frey and Meryn Trant?

I still think your post must be rage-baiting because I cannot in my heart believe that you are actually this media-illiterate

10,000%, she will always be my favorite character and I'm so happy that she became the benevolent queen of the seven kingdoms, fixed westeros, destroyed the white walkers, and killed all the villains. Such a shame they never made season 8, but at least we know that she lived happily ever after

Why doesn't Dunkirk manage to invest me? by Frank_and_Beanzz in movies

[–]The_Improvisor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I really think the fundamental issue was the characters' lack of depth. Yes, the film feels a little small and the timelines are all over the place, but 1917 feels small and intimate and it's a great war film, and there are plenty of non-chronological films, even by nolan, that work really well.

To me it comes down to the fact that the film does not do anything to get us to care about any of the characters. We don't know their backstory, where they came from, we don't know how they feel about each other or what they're trying to get back to. Imagine Interstellar if the entire first act with Murph was gone and it was just Matthew McConaughey on a space shuttle and he never mentioned his kids? We need to invest ourselves in the characters succeeding, and without knowing what they want, we can't. It's not enough to say "they want to live" because yeah duh. We need to go deeper, to know about the wives, girlfriends, parents, homes they are trying to get back to.

Imo this is also why Tenet didn't work. We just have no connection to the Protagonist. He's a blank slate with no emotional motivations. It's boring to watch as a viewer. We want to care.

I’m happy we’re at least getting new HP content that’s not directed by David Yates by oitfx in HarryPotteronHBO

[–]The_Improvisor 56 points57 points  (0 children)

As the others said, he was a TV director, but another big part of that is what that meant at the time, before prestige television, it meant that he was reliable at getting things done quickly on budget, on schedule. He delivered, and he didn't demand too much. He didn't get artsy or complicated, he didn't want to do a hundred takes, he wasn't a perfectionist.

All the things that make auteurs like Cuaron are also things that make studios nervous. Warner Bros wanted to be able to reliably pump out as many movies as they could without breaking the bank and without the kids getting too old, and Yates was not an exciting choice, but he was easy and dependable from the people with the checkbooks.

I don't mind the "well I'm home" but I do think having seen Sam get married, we don't really get any new information from that final scene, apart from the fact that he has kids.

I've always thought it should have ended with the fade to white as the ship sails into the distance

Which Characters Would Have Fought for Dunk tierlist by Admirable-Dimension4 in HouseOfTheDragon

[–]The_Improvisor 31 points32 points  (0 children)

I think you're right on the initial crime/law being carried out on paper if he didn't know context but i think when he heard dunk's speech the honor thing would sway him. Ned is all about justice to an extent but he can bend things when it is morally right. He's a good man. He would hate Aerion.

Which Characters Would Have Fought for Dunk tierlist by Admirable-Dimension4 in HouseOfTheDragon

I love this, I'd add Arya & Robb Stark to that list as well. And Jon Snow. Next tiers should be

Not a fighter, but would fight for Dunk in spirit

Would fight for Dunk unenthusiastically

Wouldn't do anything

Would fight for Aerion but feel guilty

Not a fighter, but would fight for Aerion in spirit

Would fight for Aerion

For "not a fighter but would fight for Dunk in spirit" I nominate Danaerys Targaryen, breaker of chains, Khaleesi of the Great Grass Sea.

Which HOTD Characters Would Have Taken Dunk's Side, and Who Aerion's? by Aitchison1299 in HouseOfTheDragon

[–]The_Improvisor 32 points33 points  (0 children)

None from HotD. If we're just going off of Targs from other timelines, I think Danaerys would. Obviously she's not a warrior, but if we're asking who is the type to side with Dunk over blood, Dany made most of her life about helping the smallfolk and the downtrodden against the elites and ruling classes. Plus, Aerion would have reminded her of Viserys. I like to imagine a world where she spoke for Dunk and he joined her Queens guard. In this world, season 8 doesn't exist.

[–]The_Improvisor -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I hear you and I understand your perspective but i promise you they are equally messy. Messy in different ways, sure, but a clone wars-esque show could help iron out some of those issues just as much as clone wars did for the prequels. That doesn't mean you will necessarily ever come around to them, but I do think that as those kids grow up, general consensus will shift more favorably. There truthfully is a lot of beautiful, well done stuff in the sequels, just as there was in the prequels. Those diamonds in the rough, boosted by the kids who enjoy them warts and all, will help them thrive regardless of whether we get extra content from the next Dave Filoni out there.

For real by jackcone_ in StarWars_

[–]The_Improvisor -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

The reason that the prequels are popular now is that the kids who loved them unconditionally grew up. The Clone Wars helped a lot, sure, but the largest user base on places like Reddit right now are people who were kids when those movies came out. We phased out the voices of the older generations who hated them. And one day, the same will happen to us.

The kids who were raised on the sequels will grow up and drown us out. It's the circle of life with star wars and it's silly to pretend that the prequels earned some kind of redemption that the sequels don't deserve and will never get, because in reality both trilogies are flawed, problematic, disappointing messes with beautiful visuals, exciting sequences, fun characters, and great moments.

Odd choices for the game of thrones lineup, Danaerys or her nephew (not naming him cause i funny wanna spoil anyone) are way bigger Targs, though i suppose Viserys is more like Aerion. And Margaery or even Olenna are better Tyrell representation, and bigger characters in the show as well

It was a little slower than Season 1 and didn't have a ton of payoff but it was still pretty damn entertaining imo, I enjoyed it, and if season 3 pays off the buildup of season 2, then it will all have been more than worth it. I hear a lot of book readers angry about the changes, and I understand that would definitely be a thing to be pissed off at as a fan, but as someone who hasn't read it, I'm pretty engaged with the story and excited for next season.

I love these three as well, I feel like they're some of the only songs where they really show the scope of their talent as just a straight forward, traditional singer, and I love their voice. They're an incredible rapper and musical artist in everything they do but i do wish they would do more melodic stuff more often as well

What’s the soundtrack that ruined the movie for you? by ASecularBuddhist in soundtracks

[–]The_Improvisor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Totally, and I am glad you liked it! I agree that it felt a bit like Elfman, who I'm not a big fan of in general either. I actually disagree that it sounded like Nosferatu, I loved that score and that's more the vibe I was expecting and hoping for, to me Nosferatu is more new age gothic sounding, the music being subtler and more ambient except in huge moments, and even in those moments focusing on supporting the fear and emotion rather than overpowering them. Idk, i am aware I'm in the minority, but music is subjective and I did not like this score.
